  • How is immortals? Is it a hack and slash?

    • FPS with magic instead of guns. Has some Metroidvania elements too. Will probably drop in price in a few months but a decent deal currently.

Simping over a harry potter game, Sheesh.

        • +14

Why even care about the game awards then? Clearly if they're left wing controlled then they're not pandering to you right wingers who know better. You should just host a right wing game awards.

          • +5

@caboose: I think in all fairness to people, the game awards should remain apolitical

            • +13

@RetroMetro: I would have assumed that they're currently apolitical. I'm not the one equating that AW2 winning some awards and Hogwarts not being nominated to the Game Awards being politically driven, merely driving that logic to the next ridiculous step.

              • @caboose: Tbh I didn't watch the game awards this year was just responding to the person above who claimed the awards were driven by political motives.

        • +10

People forgot about Hogwarts Legacy after a month, the thing was another flash in the pan by the numbers open world game.

Alan Wake 2 far clears Hogwarts Legacy.

          • +4

            @chepsk8: Yep

It's an entirely forgettable game. Doubt many people finished it, it's dull. Just like the poster whining about Alan Wake.

            • +22

@Gamer Dad Reviews: Bruddah the bartender in Hogsmead is trans. Hogwarts Legacy isn't some right-wing, stick-it-to-the-man game that tells it like it is. Rowling didn't even have creative input, just gave out licensing.

Also Legacy was cool when it came out earlier in the year, but even by the time it got a Switch port it was dated. Bloated open world, clunky spells menu, clearly unoptimised performance, and the combat was buttonmashing with flashy lights. The only thing it's got going is the music and atmosphere.

BG3, Zelda TOTK, AW2, Spiderman 2 all clearly Hogwarts Legacy. If you want to get all political with it, everyone in Zelda was hetero and it didn't get many nominations. Choosing Hogwarts Legacy as the political hill to die on shows me you just spew out whatever you read/ watch on socials like a sheep.

            • @Gamer Dad Reviews: Simply because of its IP, not because of the actual game itself.

The coupon here can be used for everything, and AW2 has a cheaper RRP as it’s digital only

            • +11

@Gamer Dad Reviews: Close to full price? Hogwarts Legacy is discounted 40% in this Epic Games sale while AW2 is discounted by 20% (not including the coupon). This is what happens when people 'do their own research'

            • +7

@Gamer Dad Reviews: Do you understand that a game based off the best selling book series of all time is going to sell like hotcakes regardless of how average it is?

Anyway, just wanted to point out that sales =/= quality.

because hogwart’s legacy was a stock standard rpg experience that only excelled as fan service for harry potter fans… that game itself is fine sure but it did nothing stand out to warrant a bigger audience outside of HP fans.

for every area that Hogwart’s Legacy did well, I can name at least 3 games this year that did it better. the tiktok and twitter echo chamber that made it political is so much smaller than you think, people outside of it really don’t care all that much.

also you should probably play Alan Wake II before ranting.

Maybe you can talk about that on your YouTube channel, where you review games in that hilarious voice

(What's the secret, is it a pitch shift edit pre-upload or do you gulp some helium down in-between takes)?

      • Dude's slurring and half his face seems droopy. That explains a lot

      • Dear lord that out of pitch whistling intro for the Jedi Fallen order. Dude is well cooked

      • So you guys are saying I have a face for radio and a voice for print… thanks for tip I guess!

    • +3

I thought it was an okay game (I got a preowned copy, probly wouldn’t have spent full price on it) but it reminded me a lot of Ubisoft games. Very shallow open world, definitely felt like a lot of the appeal was just fan service to people heavily invested in the IP.

Also come on, compare the narrative of hogwarts legacy to Baldur’s gate 3 or Alan wake.

    • +11

Hogwarts, while selling well is an extremely run-of-the mill RPG. It was fan service for Wizarding World fans. It not receiving a single nomination was valid. It wasn't bad but it wasn't one of the best games of the year (unless you are a devoted Wizarding World fan, then I suppose you might have found it to be).

Alan Wake II is an artistic masterpiece with an incredibly engaging story and was simply a bucket tonne of fun. Alan Wake II deserved all the love. It's a game made by people with immense artistic vision who know how to follow through on that vision. Remedy always does well at award shows because of this. They're a fantastic studio that hasn't turned their games into profit-mining exercises like most other devs have.

Where on earth does politics come into it?

Have you actually played Alan Wake II? I'm feeling like you haven't.

        • +24

Imagine what sort of game reviewer you could be if you forgot about identity politics and, you know, actually played the games

The irony of being this bad at the one thing you are interested in is not lost on us

        • +9

Here's a thought. Perhaps don't dogpile things you haven't experienced and have a bit more of an open mind about the games you play. You never know how YOU will like a game until YOU play it. I don't even look at reviews, and especially not social response when I'm buying games. I make my own mind up because to me, that's the only opinion that has ever mattered (when consuming media).

TLOU2 is also a masterpiece. The internet response to that was just a bunch of brain zombies who couldn't bare see their darling become the villain, despite it being a completely logical thing a real person might become when exposed to what she experienced.

Seems like you consume media based on internet response of people that you have 'picked' have the same outlook as you, and that's completely insane.

hang on, whats the problem here? it didnt win game of the year because JK is anti woke anti trans?
      is this the take?

      • +3

It didn't win because Hogwarts was just a pretty good Ubisoft big map game. It was very good really, but it's still just a Ubisoft big map game at the end of the day. It had a trans character with her voice artificially pitched down, so it's hardly woke.

      • -2

My problem was that it didn't receive a single nomination in any category, not even sound and music or something. It was a big AAA game and a best seller. The sheer hatred it received from leftists was obnoxious. The game Devs should have been recognised at the game awards for their good work. Even just one nomination. The fact that it didn't receive any nominations was political and in a word obnoxious.

        • +1

There has been a lot of great games that came out this year , apart from being fun I didn't hear Hogwarts offer anything out of the ordinary a non HP fan would enjoy, I'd say this was the reason for omission more so them political agenda

          • -4

@botchie: No that’s absolutely gaslighting. CoD did receive nominations last year, and as an ongoing series this year’s update was relatively minor. Meanwhile Hogwarts Legacy is a brand new AAA franchise in gaming and you’re being absolutely disingenuous to claim that there wasn’t a massive and vocal attempted boycott against the game.

    • +5

Do you mean the Harry Potter game with less spells in it then Elden Ring? That magic game?

    • +1

I think poor sales (I wasn’t aware) had a lot to do with people’s refusal to give Epic money due to their pay-for-exclusivity practice among other things I read plenty of comments from people that want to play the game but only if it comes to Steam without realising it might not even happen because Epic actually funded the development of the game.

    • +3

      Lamer Bad Reviews.

Sorry that’s the best I could do

    • +6

Because Alan Wake is much, much better than Hogwarts? The awards aren't based on sales? It clearly has nothing to do with politics - you can lie to yourself and pretend it does if it makes you feel better to have your side be the victims of persecution that you made up.

      • -5

No. The amount of sheer hatred Hogwarts Legacy received this year from leftists was unwarranted and some sort of atonement and acknowledgement by the gaming community to the Howarts Devs should have been made. A single nomination for sound and music or something would have sufficed. For the game awards to completely ignore it and boycott it was political, and - in a word - obnoxious.

        • +5

Again - they didn't boycott it. The newest CoD didn't get any major nominations either, despite also being more popular than most of the nominees. You can rant and rave about the 'leftists' and 'boycotts' all you like, but cmon - this is 100% in your head mate. I swear you guys have a victimhood kink.

    • +3

I'm 99% sure this comment is actually bait to get people angry at right-wingers, and everyone has fallen for it. Especially since Alan Wake 2 isn't even "woke". However, people in the comments are kidding themselves if they think the reason Hogwarts wasn't nominated was because it wasn't good. It received generally very positive reviews, and other games like Starfield which many considered painfully average, got nominated for best rpg. I mean, really, if Hogwarts actually did get nominated even for GOTY, people wouldn't be shocked.

Tbh, I wouldn't even say it's because The Game Awards are woke. It's because they didn't want any controversy if they nominated it. Just look at what happens whenever something associates themselves with Hogwarts Legacy. We all know about the streamers disaster and how people even got doxxed for it. And recently Nintendo announced Hogwarts was coming to Switch, and the amount of hate they received was ridiculous. They even had people threatening them.

Also, let's not pretend like this site has no political biases, and the people here are reasonable in arguing why Hogwarts didn't get nominated. Just look at anything associated with the right, like the Daily Wire documentary or The Sound of Freedom. It gets downvoted to oblivion.

      • +3

I expect Starfield was nominated because they ran a bunch of ads for the game through it.

The Game Awards are a crap commercialised piece of garbage, I don't think they would have hesitated at nominating Hogwarts if it got more viewers. But even in the people's voice awards Hogwarts didn't make the final 5 - for a game that sold so well it's simply not a good marketing tool.

Any I dunno which post you saw about The Sound of Freedom, but there was a really popular deal when free tickets were handed out for it. It got a bunch of negs, but hundreds of upvotes on the deal and plenty of upvoted comments in there. And people didn't not like it because it was right wing, but because it's basically a sham presented as a documentary.

Armored core 6 won best action game, this is all that matters to me

      • -4

Yes, exactly dude. The sheer hate Hogwarts legacy received this year from the leftist NPCs was unhinged. Imo the hard work the game Devs put into it should have been recognised in some way at the game awards. Because, to completely ignore it's entire existence - even though it was the best selling game of the year (which never happens for 3rd person action rpg games) - was, in a word, obnoxious.

        • +2

the hard work the game Devs put into it should have been recognised in some way at the game awards

So you’re angry that…they didn’t receive a participation award just because they “tried”?

    • Yeah that is strange. Shame since it's a great game but it seems to be 20% off on Steam.

  • +1

Bought Alan Wake 2 at launch and have finished the game already and as an original Alan Wake fan who played it to death I would say AW2 is a very good game. Atmosphere is phenomenal like the first one especially the lighting and gameplay itself is pretty decent/serviceable (again like the first one) though the feel of firing weapons (to me) feels really good in game and there were some genuinely cool/creative chapters. While I enjoyed the story I do think they were trying a bit too hard sometimes and ending was a bit of a letdown (but NG+ is supposed to add a bit more and we know expansion/sequel will be coming).

Overall I’ll give it at least an 8-8.5/10.

    • Ok for someone who finished Alan Wake a while ago and had nfi what the ending was about, is AWII the same or worse? lol no offense as i know you are a big fan of the original .. :)

      • +3

The story ending won't be for everyone. It's open-ended and doesn't close the story, like the original, but it does explain what's happened throughout the story. It's not a 'badly written' ending, just frustrating for some depending on what you're expecting. I, for one, loved it. There's now a new ending when you finish the game on NG+ mode too (which makes sense given the original story ending). Haven't got that far yet, though.

        • ah ok so more of an incentive to play through again to understand it further it seems.

      • +2

This video from Sam Lake (the creative director) is a good run down on the story from Alan Wake and the connection to Control
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzocqRZzyoI

      • Hahaha no offence taken man I probably won’t get two if you didn’t enjoy the first one, it is definitely very convoluted even more so than the first one IMHO.

        • lol the first one's ending made me think of the matrix architect speech where i was like either i'm not that smart or this is meant to be a convoluted confusing mess on purpose.. haha .. don't know if i want to go through the whole game and feel stupid like the first one hahaha … i'll have to tell myself it's about the journey!

          • @scud70: Nah man don’t feel stupid it’s definitely open ended and open to interpretation; AW2 does atmosphere crazy well it really was quite an experience.

  • Two questions I have:

    • I've purchased the Alan Wake 2 standard edition. Is there any chance I can get a discounted upgrade to Deluxe edition?

    • Is there any way in hell I can get a discount on Baldur's Gate 3? I can patiently wait it out I guess?

      1. I already own Alan Wake 2 but Epic want me to pay full price for the Deluxe Edition, so no I don’t there is any discount option there.

      2. Cheapest price for BG3 was through GOG using a VPN to a different country. There was a deal posted here at release, I think it was around $45AUD from memory.

    • +1

The coupon doesn't apply for the Deluxe upgrade item, sadly. It's $30.40 full price.

      • ah nuts. appreciate though you sharing that info!

    • +1

      Rarely do I say this

In terms of value for money BG3 at full price is like getting AW2 for half price. Easily double the game

    • BG3 on GOG 29.99 USD with VPN https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/791492

  • Great price for uncharted! Epic finally got me to spend money on their store after years of freebies

  • Buy this game! Unreal experience that transcends the medium.

  • -6

never paid a cent on epic never will can't wait for it on steam.

    • +8

Epic actually funded development so I wouldn’t hold out for a Steam release any time soon

      • +1

they say that about alot of games but eventually they always come out on steam.

        • +2

A lot of Epic exclusives are yet to be released on Steam. Rocket League was even removed from Steam after Epic bought Psyonix.

You should already have Epic with all the free games you get, so what’s the issue with buying a game there?

          • @dano: wasn't removed on steam if you bought it on steam still in my library on steam.

            • +2

@kungfuman: Yes, of course they wouldn’t remove it from everyone’s library. They removed it from the storefront.

If they have the rights to a game, I wouldn’t expect it to come to Steam. It seems like they funded and published Alan Wake 2, so it probably has as much chance to come to Steam as Fortnite.

        • Only true when its a 3rd party developer, because they can reap royalties from two services.

When its an in-house developer (eg. Steam with Portal, Fortnite on Epic), when there's only one marketplace for your IP, you just need to make a great game and it'll attract people to your service/ ecosystem. You can afford the slightly lower potential sales because all sales end up buying into your ecosystem.

      • +4

Not only that. It's published by Epic Games Publishing. They paid majority of, if not the entire budget. No Epic Games Publishing title has ever come to Steam since they launched that publishing label, so I wouldn't hold hope.

        • +1

Not to mention they are competing platforms, bringing in more business at the end of the day. Just like you won't see valve products on other platforms. Epic are developing their own library.

  • +4

The expanse tell tale series and rogue trader become historical lows with this coupon, pretty good deals
