    Good price, but 19.8kgs!

    • Sounds like it will be tiring to ride due to the added weight…

      • +8

I find it hard to believe that's correct. Most likely it's the weight in the box which comes with assembly tools.

        • +3

Yeah looking at it theres no reason for that bike to weigh that much even if it had the heaviest of components available.

        • Should still list the assembled weight in the specs.

      • +1

How much can you get for melting down 20kg of metals from a recycler?

        • 40 c/kg = A$8

          • +1

@Skky: Oh man. I'm just going to buy 10,000 units, then I'll make $80k. Ordered!

Edit: ummm, how do you cancel a bulk order PLEASE?

    • No way is this 19kg! That will be the boxed weight. ALDI and others make that error regularly.

I find the biggest problems with Aldi "merchandise" is
    1) Sounds good on paper but usually poor quality
    2) Usually, no service or parts backup.
    3) All will be gone as soon as Aldi's doors open on the 1st day (20 Dec)

    • +3

In my experience id agree with point 2 but have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of some of their stuff. Im not sure of the components on this bike but 29er from a few years ago had good components and was comparable to a $800 known brand like guant.

        Polygon*

        • Haha I meant giant but yeah Polygon are often even better value.

          • -3

@Spendmore: This is a polygon bike

          • +2

@Spendmore: Polygon today are what Giant once were in the industry. Now they are established with a fanboy following, Giant today charge an overpriced premium IMV.

I've owned two Polygons (& Giant plus Merida previously). Still own a Polygon. They are great value and excellent bikes.

            • @odal: yeh I dont know why people keep buying other brands - for the same specs - Polygon is easily lower cost than Trek, Giant etc

They must be after the customer service or that extra HP gain from the big TREK sticker

              • +1

@ChatCPT: Where does Merida stack compared to these brands? My dad just bought a Crossway 10 kinda out of the blue last week

              • @ChatCPT: I got my giant talon 2 for $699 with a free helmet, so I think that if you can find a good deal it's still ok to buy other brands. Rrp is a bit of a stretch though

              • @ChatCPT: often brand selection is what the local store has and how the frame fits. fit can be an issue with online vs store where you can try med large or x large. after fit it’s just level of running gear for money. my $399 fluid from anaconda has deore running gear and aluminium fork tubes instead of steel.

      1. Poor quality. Not when the bikes were rebadged Polygons, albeit a commensurate level/priced model and no more than could be expected at that price point.
      2. No service or parts backup. The first is the same regardless where you buy the bike if you buy online via distance model regardless the spin.. In the case of 1 above, there was via the AU brand reseller distro route. Just needed to be aware.
      3. Agree with you on point 3, especially in the past when they were rebadged Polygon.

Aldi merch can OK. Just need to do due diligence.

  • Any advice for getting Aldi specials? Be there at open? Any way to work out which store has stock?

Which is better? Anyway I bought the factory one. It seems great to me for what I paid.

  • Wow probably could have saved some money and bought this instead the talon 2.
Talon 2 is 14.5kg though so the discrepancy in weight should be looked into. They are both aluminium so WN might be right about boxed weight.
From a comment on here https://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewtopic.php?t=56888&sta…
    It seems that it's 16kg
Seems to be an unbranded polygon bike

The Oct bikes are still in stock in Taree which was surprising as most years they sell quickly.

    • +1

      Bearish signal

    • lol the bike bust has hit Aldi too

  • +2

Why would anyone NOT spend an extra $100 and get a better Merida bike at a bike shop?

    • Merida are overpriced junk. Ex Merida owner. Owned Giant, Polygon et al.

      • +2

Can't say I agree but any brand bike would have to be better than this. Mechanical brakes…… Ouch.

        • +2

What's wrong with good quality mech disc brakes? Simple, and if decent quality Shimano or Tektro they are fine for the average rider in urban application.

I still use mech brakes on my roadies (2) and on two of my venerable hardtails relegated to urban runabout duties these days. Only my current AM dualie and HT XC have (hydro) discs.

          • @odal: Why not get hydraulic brakes instead?

          • @odal: hydraulic brakes feel so much nicer , my flat bar, road and 29er are all hydraulic disc now.

          • @odal: Good quality mechanical disc brakes are fine.

You won't find them on bikes like these though.

    • perhaps they prefer spending that extra $100 on other things like.. cheap helmet, tools, pump, riding clothes and bag?

or they don't have that extra $100

      • Misleading comment. Polygon were one of a number of suppliers but no longer.

  • +1

Using your own energy to push a bike, a novel concept these days

  • I have the 2020 version of this, and it it's great. However I will note mine came with hydraulic disc brakes which are a good upgrade. And these are mechanical disc brakes. Might explain the price decrease? Overall for $399 if you can get your hands on it. An excellent bike

    • Won't get any hydraulic brakes you'd want to use or service on a bike for $400, and I'm no brand snob. Although I use Shimano and Avid on mine, I've used Tektro too in the past which are just fine. I agree. For $400, if its a Polygon rebadge special for Aldi, its a decent bike you'd probably pay $600 for if it carried their brand.

      • I bought it for 549 with hydro brakes and they are Shimano. Quality was a lot higher.

    • Unfortunately the Aldi mountain bike hasn't been a rebadged Polygon since 2021

  • +1

If it is an estate bike, then buyer beware. I bought the kids junior mountain a year ago for my daughter who isn't a regular user. I was surprised when the bolt holding the crank arm to the crankset/chain ring assembly completely sheered off. The bolt must have been really cheap metal/poor quality.

  • Guys, I'm novice to bikes and want to buy a bike for a casual ride around the house during summer.
Budget is < $400. Which one do you recommend? TIA.

    • +12

Gee, how big is your house?!

    • +3

      I recommend you keep saving.

    • What type of terrain are you riding on?

  • Should I get this or the Curve Belgie Disc?

  • +2

I bought this last week for 12 year old.
    Weight is 14.9kg

  • Would this work well for short rides (~5km) on cement bike paths and the occasional gravel trails? It’s just for short commutes, not really into riding.

    • Would like to know too.

    • Of course it would do the job.
It will be heavier than you need, but its not easy to find a better bike for the price.

  • Does anyone have any idea of a size guide for these? Says available in a Medium or Large but no further information given.

    • Previous model from Estate specified: 48 cm and 43.5 cm frames.

  • +1

I bought this one back in 2020, when it came with Tektro hydraulic disk brakes & Shimano Deore 1 x 10 drive train with clutch derailleur.

I was swayed by the specs, in hindsight I'd rather have spent a little more to get something from my LBS, but I am still really fond of this bike.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/526229

    My observations;

    • spokes came loose after first ride, significantly on one wheel, which needed professionally dishing, spokes tightened, etc.
    • seat pole is short, and at maximum extension will not support a heavier rider/heavy riding and will keep slipping down.
    • pedal and seat are crap, typical for most cheap bikes, expect to replace these early.
    • brakes barely work, maybe oil got onto the rotors or pads in the factory, they never seemed to work well even after some bedding in, I think I'd actually prefer rim brakes.

So expect to possibly add another $200+ to fix these issues, just live with them, or look at buying something already assembled from a bike shop.

Having said all this, I do like the bike and believe it was worth the price at the time, especially with what happened to bike pricing throughout the covid years. I'd just say to beware what you're getting into with a bike in a box, but I doubt you get much better than this for the price, and it's gonna be far far better than any crap from a variety store.

  • I grabbed one last time these were at aldi. The models before that year were a decent quality. These ones are poor quality, I went down a green mountain bike trail and the rear chain/seat stay snapped off. Also my mate got one at the same time and the bottom bracket was bent and gears would never work.

  • if you’ve owned bikes and fix things yourself, you aren’t reliant on a bike shop for adjustments and tightening. if you can’t fix bikes yourself, bike shops usually give first service free and will tighten and adjust things like spokes, derailleur, etc.

This bike was our most regretful purchase of 2022 which is the same 'Estate' model shown here. We were hoping for the 2020 polygon model but settled on these due to price and have paid for it since as components have fallen apart such as gear selector, brakes, levers, pedals and bearings. Unfortunately we had bought 2 of these bikes (from different stores) and had the same issues with both so weren't able to interchange working parts between them.

Do yourself a favour, give these a miss and spend a little extra on a more reputable brand e.g. trek, as their budget offerings such as the Marlin series have lasted 4 years longer than these estate bikes and is still going strong for us

  • My 2020 polygon, shimano deore, hydraulic tektro brakes modded with a 750w bafang mid mount motor always puts a huge smile on my face..

A real pity specs and brand have dropped..
