Dammit - missed out last time, was sent to other stores to pick up and they did not have the right size… Now I cant afford it.

    • Damn, I'm looking to pick one up but hope they still have them in stock.

Anyone else have any experience with the Bikes last year?

      • +2

I have last year's ($399) and the year before's ($349). This one looks identical to last year's model with the Deore 1x10 and hydraulic brakes. Great bike for the price.

        • Thanks & If you don't mind me asking, how was buying one at the shops? Did you go early?

          • +4

@Loopenip: Was looking to get two large bikes, went early with wife in tow, was second in line and very nearly missed out. There was a sprint followed by people blindly grabbing whatever they could. The staff had also booby-trapped the whole thing by putting one bike upright on top of the others so that when people hauled the bikes out it would fall on anyone who wasn't paying attention. I saved some poor kid by gently lowering that bike to the ground. meanwhile the rest of the bikes had already been torn away from the pallet. And… the sizing on the boxes wasn't obvious at all leading to lots of confusion and people getting the wrong sizes. Of course the one I ended up with was Medium. Luckily I had a friend who went to a less competitive store looking for a Medium and they managed to grab a Large for me. Was one of those occassions when one's faith in human nature takes a huge dent. :-( You asked. ;-) Good luck to all!

  • +2

They put the price up, the bike used to be $249 or $349

    • I think this is the same bike ($399 last time)
      https://www.ambmag.com.au/gallery/we-test-the-aldi-premium-2…

      • link says $449

"Aldi have done it again with their 29er Premium Mountain Bike, bringing rock solid parts and handling to a hardtail that sells for just $449."

        • +1

I swear it said $399 five minutes ago. Don't forget the exchange rate is terrible atm.

Anyway the review says this is a Polygon Mountain Bike.

          • +10

@Arthur Dunger: Cached version of the page says $399, they've updated the price.

          • +10

@Arthur Dunger: Won't this make for a rougher ride compared to circular wheels?

          • @Arthur Dunger: Probably did. The text shows it's been updated and says "have released an update to their Premium Mountain Bike for 2020." Later refers to the price being $100 more than 2018.

    • You'd have to fact check but when they bumped up the price they changed components too

    • +2

I bought it last time this deal came up.
The bike looks exactly the same, I paid $399 so yeah they have hiked it up $50.

      • +1

Is your bike a 1x10 setup with clutch on the rear mech?

        • +1

It looks identical to the deal from last August: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/479773

The AMBmag review is also datelined August 2019, although they've updated it with the current price.

        • +1

          Yes

        • +1

          Yes, that is correct.

    • It was $349 in 2016 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/265723
I would suggest waiting a few weeks for it to go on clearance

      • +10

Different components. Notably 1x10 Deore and hydraulic brakes this time around. Definitely worth the extra $50

        • They were hydraulic last time though? Or were they cable actuated hydro brakes?

          • @Droz: they are hydraulic or mechanical only

            • +1

@poohduck: There are some cable actuated hydraulic disc brake calipers for bikes out there:

              TRP Hy/Rd Disc Brakes

              Giant Conduct, also components

Note:Not relevant to this Aldi bike.

              • @trongy: No specific mention of hydraulic, most prob mechanical disc

                • @comm: The Ozbargain post from August 2019 specifically mentions hydraulic disc brakes.
The 2020 ad in the link says "Tektro hydraulic disc brakes".

                  The AMBmag review also says:

One of the big changes compared to the 2018 Premium 29er Mountain Bike is a move to Tektro dual-piston hydraulic brakes from cable-actuated.

This review is the same as the 2019 review, with the dates changed.

                  • @trongy: Gotcha!, thanks for checking :)

      • +5

I would suggest waiting a few weeks for it to go on clearance

Last time these were gone in pretty much every store on the day they went on sale. People lined up in the morning! I got in at 9:30 and they were sold :(

        • Not at my local Aldi. Still had stock for 2-3 days.

        • The australian $ is dropping - 57c US now

      • +8

I would suggest waiting a few weeks for it to go on clearance

Yeah sure, why don't you all wait… so I can actually buy one.

      • +4

4 weeks minimum before we put them on clearence. Typically these would sell out well before that, but im not sure in the current climate

        • they will still be around.. everyone wants paper towel right now

          • @Dotherightthing: I don't know about that. People are looking for permittable activities during the COVID-19 period. I expect this will sell out quickly.

Here's a thread where someone sold their home gym equipment on Gumtree for more than than the paid for it. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/526207

        • Thanks for that, are clearance prices Aus wide? Also - if they go on clearance can we claim the price difference :D ?

    • I think you are right when these first came out they were $249 and normal ones were $149 or $129.

      • Dollar was close to parity back then tho

      • The early ones didn't have hydraulic brakes and the 1x10 gearing.

    • I bought the same bike for 399 last year.

    • +7

so you know more than the person who reviewed it who is actually a rider, tell us your favorite pick for under 500 if your so good

    • +10

Polygon bikes are made in Indonesia.

      • +1

        Haha nice one.

    • link something cheaper and with better components?
btw, the keyboard you used to type this message is likely made in China.

    • +3
      1. A number of top end mountain bike frames are manufactured in China. Yeti, Santa Cruz, etc (5k for frame alone). Not sure what you're getting at with that comment. Care to elaborate? Anyway, this bike frame is manufactured in Indonesia.

      2. If you can point people in the right direction where you can get similarly specced bike for $450 or so, that would greatly support your claim of it not being worth the asking price.

      • I think you are replying to the wrong post :)
Im asking the author of this comment, who is saying that this bike a rip-off, to link a better specced bike for similar price. I don't believe You can find anything better.

PS, aware that the majority of the frames are made in china (Bronson owner here..)

        • He was replying to dynaflow, not you.

          • @ashanrath: ah right, my browser messed up with the pagination, that's why :D

      • Some of them are moving to Cambodia, I think Specialized amongst others ? Due to the taxes Trump slapped on China.

As to the price, I had my awesome Salsa 29'er dually (that I had imported from the US) stolen recently. Wanted a commuter, so I hunted around on Gumtree and found a 29" Giant Fantom (2 x 9) HT for a great price (more then 50% off the discounted retail price I found in store) , only ridden twice and then left in the garage for 10 months (with an ok track pump and lock) before they decided to sell it. It seems to have about the same shitty specs though.

My suggestion, hunt about on GT ?

    • +1

Most bikes are made in China - even the expensive carbon road bike frames that people pay a fortune for.

      • I seem to only see "made in Taiwan" for the brand names.

    • +1

      LOL. Epic fail by dynaflow.

  • +3

I got the set of lights last time. They're great for the price, 1000 lumens and USB rechargeable.
I might grab a helmet this time.

    • Yes, I also recommend the set of lights.

Extremely bright front light to the point I only use the lowest setting (400 lumens I think). I have used the 1000 lumen setting when riding in the dark and it lights up the street like a floodlight! :O

Bought the set of lights approximately 2 years ago and still use them (and will be using them tonight for my nightly evening ride)!

      • The ultra bright lights are good for daytime riding. Too bright for normal street riding in the dark though.

    • Was tempted to get the lights until I seen the built in battery is only 800mAh for the front and 500mAh on the rear..

      • Front light battery is 2400mAh

        • I guess they upped the capacity because when the special first showed on the website it said 800 and now it says 2400

  • Picked up two of these for a mate and me. Great bikes, we have taken them on some trails and I ride mine to work fairly frequently. Have had no issues apart from dialing in the derallier.

  • We have 2 of these.
One is 3 years old, the other is 2 years old.
Great bikes for the price, but I paid $350 and $250 (on clearance).

  • -2

mine from last year def has an xt deraillier. i thought it was 1x11, but not 100% on that.

    • +1

Unlikely. 1X11 and XT drivetrain would be the better part of the cost of this bike.

  • 29" Mountain Bike $449

what height ranges would this bike suit?

    • +9

The 29" refers to the size of the wheels.

I believe there are the standard S, M, L sizes.

      Edit:

      The review states the following:

With two sizes available (medium and large) we would suggest going to a large if you're much taller than 170cm due to the short seat post length out of the box Unfortunately if you're someone who needs a very small frame or something akin to a farm gate, this bike won't be for you.

      • +1

something akin to a farm gate

        LOL

    • +1

I have the older version (pretty much the same geometry) and I think a rider up to 190cm would be fine on a large with pushing the seat pole and headset up.
At 195cm I replaced the seat pole with a longer one and the bike is usable for me, if I was much taller I would have issues with the pedals being in the wrong place and potentially causing issues with the knees etc.

      • +1

What about for someone who is just about in the middle, 173? Better to go bigger or smaller?

        • +2

Size large may be a bit big, someone I know who is a bit above 180cm and they only just clear the top tube when standing over the frame so I would lean towards size M but it would be worthwhile seeing if owners around that height chime in.
On a side note the Aldi return policy is good (assuming plenty of stock) so if it does not fit you could look at swapping.

          • @MoneyPincher: I'm exactly 180cm and I'm happy with the L 29er.

            • @qwerty-4321: awesome to know, do you think @spa who is 7cm shorter would be ok on a size L or would trying a size M still be the best starting place?

              • +1

@MoneyPincher: Hard to tell but my gut feeling is to go for an M if they are 173cm. The biggest change for me on this 29er (coming from a 27.5) is the extra reach from the seat to the handle bars and that might be where they struggle.

        • M will be the way to go for people under 175cm.

          • @Volution: What if i am exactly 175cm? lol

            • @Kabal: I'd suggest you get L if you are 175cm.

              • @Volution: If you are planning on using it as a mountain bike, Ie off road, then a smaller frame is easier to manoeuvre. If on road only, then the larger is probably better.

I typically ride an extra large road bike, but found that an XL mountain bike was too big.

  • 10speed MTB?

Any pics spec on kids bike?

    • +2

Rather 10spd than 24 or 30 with modern mountain bikes. High-end bikes now have 12 speed drivetrains - only one chainring makes shifting simpler and minimises chaindrop.

      • I've been moaning and groaning over this bike. It's a good deal, however I have the opportunity to get a 2020 Giant ATX1 for slightly more than $449. As I'd like to do some touring with the bike and be able to reach higher speeds, and only for this reason I'm probably going to go for the ATX1.

        • That looks quite good actually. Is your opportunity shareable?

I think I am leaning towards just a flat bar roadbike.

        • +1

This bike has faster gearing than that Giant. The fastest gear on the Giant is 36/32 which is slightly faster than the 32/11 on the Aldi bike, but because the Giant is only 27.5 wheels compared to this bikes 29er wheels the effective gearing is faster on this bike. And Deore is far superior to the acera gears on the Giant. You lose about a gear at the slow end with the Aldi, but this really shouldn't be an issue with touring. (http://gears.mtbcrosscountry.com/#27.5I2021I8530X29I1567I189…) - there's almost no difference in speed using the fastest gears.

          Get the Aldi.

          • @shaolinbear: Let's hope the stock is ample. And it arrives.

The giant has a slight better fork though. Which is more important than the gearset.

            • +2

@Zenith2k3: Barely any difference and for touring you'll have it locked out anyway

          • @shaolinbear:

Deore is far superior to the acera gears on the Giant

Not really. It’s one step up the chain. Acera works perfectly fine, just not as flashy.

  • +3

The posted link mentions a review of the kids bike on https://www.bicycles.net.au
    can anyone find that review?

  • +3

Perfect for my 50m2 backyard in isolation

    • +2

You're allowed to go for a ride, or walk.

  • +1
    • +4

Huge difference between the low grade Tourney components on this one and decent Deore on the Aldi one.

    • "TEKTRO mechanical disc brake set"

Worth the extra for the aldi just to get the hydraulic. Mech disks are a PITA.

  • can anyone comment on welding quality?
the welds look so much different compared to say on a giant trance alu frame

    • +1

Welds are fine, frames made by polygon which have a decent reputation

  • I really like that kids bike. I have mine on Byk drop-bar cyclocross bikes but if not, they would definitely be getting these (for a third the price)!

  • So tempting

  • +2

    Few notes on the accessories:
The Sport glasses frames have a tendency to crack at the top even if you are not replacing the lens (I have 3 sets with the lens glued into the frames after cracks).
For the weight weenies the mini pump is surprisingly heavy.
Unless it's changed the chain combo lock can be easily picked with a feeler between the numbers (think less than 20 seconds with practice).

  • +3

FYI, ALDI have announced that they are prioritising delivery of essential products to stores in response to panic buying and advertised special buys may not be available as a result.

  • +1

While we're talking about bikes, can anyone recommend an adults bike in the $100-$200 range ? Just want something to ride while the gyms are shut……

    • +5

Buy this. So much more worthwhile to spend the extra money.
