      https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/63605/hydralyte-electrolyte-apple-blackcurrant-4-pack-(4x250ml)-solution

This is the best flavour if you’re getting a ready pack or strawberry kiwi if you’re getting tablets.

    • Apple Blackcurrent, there is nothing that masks the vitamin C taste better than Blackcurrent :D

  • +7

Assuming you're not crapping/vomiting/exercising intensely etc, wouldn't drinking this stuff instead of water mean taking in a lot more sodium than is good for you?

    • +16

For occasional use its amazing. Like if feeling a bit dry or dehydrated or unexplained headache it makes a huge difference over taking just water. Really do recommend. We buy the aldi ones.

    • +1

I wouldn’t think it’s a good idea to drink them frequently like OP’s wife, no

      • +24

Doctor here, fine to drink regularly, we give it out to everyone

Thanks doc. Mind taking a look at my rash while you’re here?

Doctor here, fine to drink regularly, we give it out to everyone

Phew, that's a relief doc: I drink very regularly, and when I do I give it out to almost anyone.

My GP is a mad cyclist and years ago he actually reccomended these types of tablets to help recover from a bad bout of the flu however he did also mention that I'll probably be p!ssing most of the tablets contents away except for the sugar.
He actually said it's very easy to make a homemade version of an electrolyte drink and the amount of salt people need to ingest to maintain sodium levels is very low.
The recipe he gave me and what I've used ever since is this: 4 cups of water to half a cup of whatever fruit juice you like, quarter teaspoon of plain iodised salt or sea salt if you insist on p!ssing money away (his words not mine), table spoon of honey. Fresh lime or lemon and mint if you want. Blend and store in fridge.
I make it a lot in the summer just as a sports drink alternative.

      • +2

Salt n sugar is the bare bones version but the recipe sounds great!

    • +1

my girlfriend who has diabetes finds these super helpful when she has high blood sugar

      • Interesting.

      • Do these bring the blood sugar down? I thought these include some sugar content so it might increase the blood sugar.

        • not necessarily, but they do help with dehydration-esque symptoms i should specify

    • +10

      It's got electrolytes!

      • +10

        Its got what plants crave?

The #1 movie in America was called "Ass." And that's all it was for 90 minutes. It won eight Oscars that year, including best screenplay.

    • Probably harmless if you’re young and healthy, and probably no benefit if you don’t have a severe gastrointestinal illness. You’re just making your pee expensive.
Probably harmful if you have any sort of moderate stage chronic kidney, heart or liver failure.

    • Electrolytes fuel EVERY MUSCLE CONTRACTION AND THOUGHT you have and because sodium is burnt in water processing by your body, it'd be really unusual to somehow build up extra by drinking too much Hydralyte (assuming you're drinking it with recommended water).

I drink Hydralyte about 3-4pm in the afternoon for an energy boost when I get that afternoon slump. I also drink this when I'm feeling run down.

      • “ it'd be really unusual to somehow build up extra by drinking too much”

Excessive sodium intake is a thing.

  • Might just be for me but orange flavour says c&c isn't an option .. only delivery

  • +8

Aldi variety still cheaper at normal price. Plus have better flavour IMO (for Orange at least)

    • Agreed I always buy the Aldi ones they work a treat especially after a big night

    • What are they called?

      • Essential health* Electrolyte X flavour, I bought the black current yesterday to trial :)

        • How much are they for how many?

          • @Poor Ass: hmmm 20 pack (instructions say to take 2 per 200ml though) price, not positive I believe $4 or $5

    • Purple is the best flavor. My local ALDI rarely have any purple left.

  • +9

Just in time for the work Xmas party hangovers.

    • Korean ginseng.. some vitamin C and a couple of Panadols/neurophens… Have the ginseng before you go drinking and the other two after (just before you go to bed) .. I have the same thing the next day as well for good measure.. works pretty well! Of course lots of water is also a must (or this stuff hehe)

      • Korean Ginseng is great, I haven't had any for a few years, used to buy the gold box of tea sachets in the asian grocer. About $20 I think. Makes you feel good and keeps the blood circulating nicely. Will have to get some more.

      • Pretty sure most people should try to avoid Paracetamol and Ibuprofen while your liver is processing alcohol.
As with most things though, evidence both supports and doesn't. Consult your doctor.

        • +1

More of a concern for paracetamol, however ibuprofen affects the kidneys more than the liver.

  • +3

I always bought the Aldi brand for $5? I think it only had 20 tables tho.

    • +1

I might be wrong but I think I paid $6.50 the other day. Sometimes you can get a 60 pack in the middle aisle for a better unit price though.

    • 20 tablets, now $7 or $7.5

      • Damm, inflation! Bahahah

My trick these days is to buy bcaas on clearance.

Extend 90 serva $20, I bought 6 tubs. A lot of them contain electrolytes!

    • My local ALDI charge seven dollars sixty something. It's been going up for a while now.

  • +3

As a comparison Powerade Powder bulk packs were on sale recently.

    https://amzn.asia/d/0jrGC2s

$51 via S&S for 6x500g =3kg which is think is better value.

  • I used to suffer from gout, regularly, until I started taking Hydralite. No attacks of gout for 6+ months thanks to semi regular, (say once or twice a fortnight) hydralite top-ups.

    • +1

      you a red wine drinker?

      • No. Never touch it. Drink beer socially.

        • There are foods that can exacerbate a susceptibility to gout but red wine is a factor too.

The only thing that stops my gout is if I stop with the red. I’d love to think a bit of hydralyte’d do the job

          • @0jay: I had gout on and off for 20 years. In the past 2-years, I was getting it sometimes once or twice a week and having to take anti-inflamatory meds. I was drinking plenty of water, 2+ litres a day, to try and flush the urea out of my system. I literally took Hydralite a few times and the gout never came back in 6 months.

            • @IhadAGoodNameBut: I only ever get it if I’m getting though 2-3 bottles of red a week. If I quit the red (switch to white or dry out for a bit) it goes away immediately.

I’ve nursed in the past and we spent a bit of time looking at gout as a case study, there are foods that can be as bad as red for some but it’s a while ago now and I can’t recall details.

If an electrolyte drink does the job for you more power to y but I take electrolytes when I’m on the sauce and it does nothing to prevent what the claret brings on.

  • +4

I am pregnant and 100% recommend having these regularly. It’s hard to drink as much water as you need. My OB reassured me that it’s perfectly fine to drink every other day.
i’ve loaded up on the ice block varieties of these for summer. They had them on special at woolworths bad amazon recently around $10 a box.

  • +2

    2 cups of water
    1/2 cup of juice
    1/4 teaspoon of salt

    Same

    • +2

But then you miss out on the shitty fake sugars , sucralose, mannitol. 🤮

    • Can't be the same. There's no ELECTROLYTES.

    • +1

If I remember correctly, electrolytes are made up of more basic molecules that require less effort for your body to break down. Meaning a faster conversion into resources for your body to use.

Sugar and salt are more complex molecules and require your body to break it down, before it can be used.

  • +4
    • Second this. It's Often $20 for 60 tablets and does essentially the same thing as hydralyte.

    • A vote for voost from me, they go on sale for half price at coles/woolies pretty often.

    • Wow that's a lot cheaper than Aldi

    • Voost is gut ja!

    • Chemist War6is part of the spotlight foundation

  • Perfect for summer and kids

Better to novated lease $41k car

  • this isn't 50% off, it is only $9.50 Off EDLP

usually CW has 1/2 off sales, will this go down to 1/2 off? im in no rush to buy and usually buy my stuff at 1/2 price.

  • Yes it's cheap, but is it sustainable to keep on using the effervescent? (Except for the severely dehydrated) I make my own: honey, salt, lemon and water.

  • +4

These are convenient.. But do yourself a favour. Look at the active ingredients. Glucose, potassium, sodium from what I can see.

    https://www.coles.com.au/search?q=Lite%20salt

    $3 for 170g tub of 50/50 potassium /sodium.

    https://www.coles.com.au/product/coles-iodised-table-salt-50…

$1.50 for 500g of iodised table salt.

Buy a measuring spoon with 1/4 teaspoon option, and just add one of each to a 1.25l of whatever drink you fancy. Id heartily recommend using an empty soda bottle, pouring 1/5th of your favourite fruity soda (I like solo zero as I'm sweet enough.. ), add the salts, top off with water. You can also use cordial, made up as normal.

Viola, a tasty rehydration/electrolyte drink for a few cents.

If you decide to go further, buy magnesium glycinate capsules, and add one of those.

No more cramps or headaches for me when I drink 2 of those a day

    • True, if consumed in large quantities (500ml +) the tablets are great if you want a little boost to hydration or other medication is draining you a bit :)

    • +1

Or buy this and pop 2 tablets (71.6cents) in a glass of tap water without spending 5 mins each time doing this…

If you have the time of day and patience to measure each time, sure why not. Not me tho

      • +1

It's literally 2 small spoons dumped in.. Used to take me longer to unwrap the foil on a hydra sometimes. Hey, do what works for you though.

        • Do you mean tea spoons? Cuz that'll be like an overdose no? Assuming 1 teaspoon has 2300mg of salt in normal table salt, this lite salt be half that at 1150mg at 2 spoons = 2300mg.

I was just trying to work out how much I should put in my smoothies etc as this is great so will buy. I think 1/4 teaspoons per day should be ok. Ta!

          • +2

@FrozenFred: No, in my comment I recommend 1/4 teaspoon measuring spoons. But you can use a teaspoon and a larger bottle if you want.

    • How come salt and lite salt?

I'm about to be working as an apprentice in the sun and I sweat so much. Need a cost effective option

      • +2

Lite Salt is potassium chloride, regular salt sodium chloride - different electrolytes but your body needs all of them.

      • You need more sodium than potassium. If your foods heavily salted, maybe skip the plain salt.

        • pretty sure potassium choride’s not the same as dietary potassium

          • +3

@0jay: You'd be right. Potassium chloride is broken down by our bodies, the same as sodium chloride. So if you look at the absolute numbers you'll actually get 1/4 by weight elemental potassium, 1/4 by weight sodium, and 1/2 as chloride, which our bodies excrete.
            That's for the lite salt.

    • I use these at work when I realise I'm losing concentration or running low on energy. WHEN this happens is irregular (often because I'm randomly a shitty sleeper).

The Eff Tablets are ultra useful first aid to keep in the bag, drop one in a cup, walk away and it's ready to drink a little bit later.

    • What’s the advantage of iodised salt?

  • +1

I’ve been drinking LMNT electrolytes every day, has turned into an expensive habit. Just because I’m sick of bland water taste.

    • +8

Really? I can't get enough of the classic taste of water. I'm addicted to the stuff, drink it every day

  • +2

When working on hot firegrounds were are told (minimum per hour) 3 bottles of plain H2O then one bottle of Staminade per hour to keep the electrolytes up . If you overdo the Staminade (or similar) it can apparently lead to Diarrhea

  • Looks like all these options contain some sugar?

Any electrolytes without sugar? Recently started intermittent fasting so don't want to break the fast

    P.S any other fasters here?

    • Read my post about 5 up.

    • High 5 Zero are sugar free. Got mine from wiggle UK. About 12.50 for 20 tabs.

I remember when these where $5-8. Looking at the comments and the ALDI ones, it appears everything has gone up quite a bit.

I generally have them at half dose, 1 tab to 1.5L.

  • +1

Any idea on expiry date on these?

    • +1

      2025

    • Got 2 packs from my local CWH today in Ringwood (VIC), both stamped October 2024.
