    • +7

Even at BigW they are like $130 now.
Recently had to buy one for someone on NDIS, I ended going to 3 different cash converters and getting an old samsung one for $29.

      • Yep..set up a granny flat cinema…cost me $100. Still happy enough to not nead to upgrade…
That being said, the Bluray recorder doesnt support UHD 4K…but then it would seem neither does this.

Is 1080p blu ray better than 4K streaming? Does this old blu ray player even support HDR?

        • +5

In my own experience, if you want to enjoy a 1080p movie, you'd want to watch the bluray - 4k stream is obviously the better choice PQ wise, but BluRay beats 1080p streams hands down.

          • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: All streaming services offer 4K tho, except maybe some of the News Corpse services.

            • +1

@AustriaBargain: Not all, some movie still on 1080p

                  @AustriaBargain:

except maybe some of the News Corpse services.

Just reply your comments, even some latest movie, still streaming at 1080p at popular streaming service.

                • +5

@AustriaBargain: not the best analogy, considering that bluray hass better audio quality vs streaming service

                  • -2

@BargainHunterJohnnyB: Some streaming services offer Atmos now. Is higher bitrate legacy audio on BR better than streaming Atmos? And 4K, and HDR. The legacy 1080p blu ray format just doesn't look so hot when you compare all the features.

                    • +3

@AustriaBargain: Yes, it is better than compressed ATMOS which is audio with height channels - Bluray audio is uncompressed 24/48.

Besides you have to have the right set up to take advantage of ATMOS and HDR.

Only the most expensive LCDs and OLEDs have HDR capability.

                      • +2

@BargainHunterJohnnyB: C'mon, HDR is a standard feature these days on TVs. Zoned backlighting has become so common in quality TVs that they are calling it microLED now. And headphones with Atmos compatibility is also a standard feature on quality headphones.

                        • +2

@AustriaBargain: Yeah but only the top tier models have decent zoned backlighting… the cheapo tvs have 12 zones tops… and the ones with loads of zones cost an arm and a leg.

Headphones with ATMOS isnt the same as ATMOS height channels.

            • @AustriaBargain: Yeah but not all the classic movies are available in 4K UHD and when they are the streaming services might only stream them at 1080p.

            • @AustriaBargain: Binge and Foxtel both do 4K on many titles.

            • +3

@AustriaBargain: However, is the source material 4K for all these streams?

"4K" just tells you that the content is streamed at a certain resolution. It doesn't indicate if it has been upscaled on the server-side from lossy sources. To really know what you're getting, you need to know the resolution of the source master and the entire pipeline used to prepare it for streaming. Does 4K even make sense if it was upscaled from a lower-resolution digital master transferred from the original film?

The great thing about physical media is that you can go onto audio-visual forums and find the best version of particular content, with commenters analysing BluRay releases in forensic detail. For classic movies, which can have huge variations in quality between releases, this is particularly important.

            • @AustriaBargain: Just wondering if News Corp is a β€œcorpse”, why do the left complain it has too much influence?

      • Hmmm… Netflix term covering all streaming. Some content isn't even available on Blu-ray or 4k anymore, and 2nd hand might have scratches.. Etc or it wasn't on physical media to begin with. All you have is streaming and rips. Have also heard some Blu rays been upscaled poorly from DVDs - studios will try to get away with anything these days. It's a mixed bag really.

    • +2

That's just lazy. It's not like having to get up every 22 minutes for a vinyl. You'd be sitting down for +2 hours before having to change a blu-ray.

      • Not with my attention span. πŸ˜‰

      • Some record albums (as in an actual album with multiple pages/records) would have their B side on a different record instead of the reverse side, so you could stack them up to listen to them in order, then just flip the stack to listen to the other half of the album https://youtu.be/3D9LYzLbJI0?t=181

  • Adjusted to $165

    • Might get cancellation…

  • Not 4K, probably a bad time to buy this.

      But this is Panasonic.

  • Great price

  • Damn, you guys are quick!

  • I thought this might have been a 4K Blu-ray player but nope it's only 1080p. Can't do your 4K Blu-ray collection with this sucker. And damn if I didn't live in Rockhampton QLD so i found I couldn't buy any way being regional QLD. This no love for some parts of regional Australia exclusion by Bing Lee. What's with that crap.

    • +3

It just saved you buying a clunky old 1080 dvd/blue ray player, so that's a definite benefit. πŸ‘

    • Wow
.. I thought all Bluray player must be 4k capable, as I thought all blu ray disks are 4k. I mean why make fhd on Bluray, fdh can fit into DVD, right?

      • +2

        DVD is actually 720x480 haha

      • +4

Because it's not just all about the number of pixels - it's about the quality and accuracy of those pixels.
A high bitrate 1080p will look better than low bitrate 2160p

      • fdh can fit into DVD, right?

Not quite. While you can technically burn a video file (such as .mp4) on a DVD (~5MBps for a 2 hour movie), normal DVD players won't be able to play it, and the compression will be higher so the quality will generally be lower than a Bluray (which is ~30-35Mbps).

  • If you buy a blu ray player that means you have to buy blu rays

    • Don't blu-ray players act as a media player also through the USB port?. Perhaps this could have made for a 1080p media player

      • Oh that isn't a bad use case if it works without any kind of DRM
