lol… flash support is still a feature?

    • Well soon its going to be off the market with the versatility of HMTL 5, so It won't be a selling point for anything within the next few years.

      • i give it a few months, isn't flash support removed in jellybean?

      • +5

While they do have some overlap, HTML5 and Flash are two totally different technologies, and they each have their use cases. I can't see Flash fully dissapearing any time in the near future.

      • +1

Can't see Flash disappeared either as there are still lots of "legacy" sites and web applications built with Flash.

Although Flash support has been removed from Jelly Bean and can no longer be downloaded from Google Play, you can still find the package files on the net and installed it on Jelly Bean phones/tablets.

      • As a long-time hater of Flash, I was excited when HTML5 came along. But to my disappointment, I now dread when websites offer HTML5 video as the only option, since it's generally A LOT slower than Flash video on an old PC. Based on the desktop and mobile computing power I've seen in developing countries, HTML5 will need a lot more tinkering before Flash can be abandoned.

      • Ops, didn't mean to start anything.

But I do believe that the flexibility of HTML 5 can/will produce 99% of the desired effects and concepts of flash by its final standardisation (probably many years away).

I think the main selling points of HTML5 is that is easier to standardize across the board compared to flash, easier to integrate, easier to develop, and easier to implement and change. Not saying flash is already dead, but its well on its way to legacy (probably less than 3 years before its classified as such IMHO).

        • There's one "issue" with HTML5, which is that support varies depending on browser. The one thing Flash gives you is a consistent experience across multiple different browsers and devices.

I'm a web developer and am all for open standards so I'd love to see HTML5 take over a lot of the usages of Flash around the web.

        • @Kill Joy, the reality is the opposite. HTML5 will always be fractured, just like every other version of HTML has been. Firefox are warming to H.264 but haven't committed on the desktop so video is still an issue (unless you want to encode all your videos in two formats). WebGL is promising but Microsoft doesn't like it so won't implement it. SVG can replace some of Flash's vector-based output but is not being improved consistently across browsers. Canvas is bitmap-based so in many cases is much more resource-intensive than Flash. Flash can be sandboxed within the browser for security/stability reasons while it's much harder to do this for HTML5 which runs in the browser itself. And on and on.

Flash is owned by one company and so advances very quickly compared to the 15-year development of HTML5. There are no competing or draft standards. It's consistent across browsers. It's trivial to include in a page (using swfobject). It's portable (images, other media, code, all in one bundle). Is much easier to develop (animation tools for HTML5 are rudimentary compared to Flash Professional, enterprise tools are rudimentary compared to Flash Builder).

I would prefer a world where HTML5 was a viable, consistent, feature-rich replacement for Flash with great development tools but the reasons you gave for HTML5's superiority are wildly off base now and may be in the future too.

If you want to see what Flash can do now, take a look at this (takes a few minutes to load):
          http://www.unrealengine.com/flash/

        • I don't claim any professionally accredited experience behind my claims, but I still stick to them.

I know everything you stated about flash(and acknowledged personally the ones i didn't), but what what I was getting at was that concept execution was a lot more straight forward then flash. You obviosuly cant compare feature to feature on actual code and techniques methods for creating something (eg. cell/path based motion, triggers, etc), but the general goal of a flash system on the web can or will be replicable in the future. Obviously this wont apply to flash games or the likes, but I was speaking in a more commercial outlook(website design, etc). But its not always 'trival' to include properly into a webpage to work with the visuals. HTML is obviously a lot easier to alter and change on the fly to suit, which is where flash really hits a road block from my point of view. That and security concerns.

I do agree with some things you have stated (extended standard development and implementation and other things) but at the end of the day its subjective to individual interpretation and just like every other topic on the internet you could debate it till its been well and truely beaten to death but that won't change a thing :)

    • +1

Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first model of the transformer, and back then yes, flash support was only a feature, not a staple.

    • +1

No, the dock is only compatible with TF101. Any TF201 docks will work with the TF300 though.

      Thank you so much K.

    • +3

Someone at EB having a laugh? Doom cheat code anyone? :) lol

      • +1

Perhaps IDSPISPOPD/IDCLIP would be more appropriate for free delivery?

        • +3

          ↑↑↓↓←→←→BA► = infinite docks!

    • What's the code for the free optional docking station?

      :)

    • +1

I wonder what that code means…

      IDKFA = I Don't Know F-All?

  • This is the original transformer eee pad isn't? Anyone knows what is the sequence of model launch?

    • Yeah, it's the original. It pretty much goes TF101 -> TF201 -> TF300 | TF700. Though the TF201 is arguably better than the TF300, despite connectivity problems.

      • Yep the infinity is better in a way if you rely on gps alot. The TF300 was a budget oriented version of the 201. Plastic back for better wifi/gps reception, but the screen is not as good and doesn't have the super ips mode (super brightness).

  • +1

where does it say that it comes with the dock?

  • +5

Where did you see with dock? I can only see the picture showing the dock but no wording about $248 come with dock, otherwise it is just a normal price. Beware guys!

  • +2

Thanks OP, but it doesnt say anywhere that it comes with the dock??

  • "The Transformer sets itself apart from other tablets on the market by featuring an optional docking station."

  • +1

I have removed "Dock" from the title because the description does not mention it comes with a dock.

    • I wonder if it is still a bargain…

      • +1

I don't think the dock is included at all. Notice the description says "Optional docking station" but there is no mention of a dock being included.

Even if the dock were included, this deal won't beat the Lenovo 3G thinkpad tab from last few months. That was a damn good deal.

  • +1

the link shows a picture of it with the dock and half the advertisement refers to the dock, is it definitely not included? I would buy if it is.

Edit: scrimshaw, you're right, it says optional in the text, very sneaky I almost bought it. You wouldn't get away with that sort of ad on ebay!

not really a bargain, based on the above. that was almost a year ago.
any thoughts? im looking for a sub 300 tablet, not fussed about the size

    • +3

      Nexus 7.

      • I can't decide between the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy 2 7.0

        • Nexus 7 is in every way superior to Galaxy 2 7.0, other than non-expandable memory.

        • thanks for the advice scotty!

  • Talk about a confusing add description. It also says 'featuring an optional docking station' so is it a feature of this tablet or not? It can't feature an optional component!

Oh buy this car that has all these great features and the optional extras include….. (you get the idea).

So then the docking station is optional? so it's not a feature. Bleh.

Then 'The docking station extends battery life….16hrs etc' and the add claims 16hrs battery (with the sneaky asterisk and 1).

So is it optional to use the docking station instead of it being an optional extra?

    Ok I give up lol.

edit: +'d just cos you post lots of deals :P

  • They've copied the text directly from the Asus website hence the reference numbers which mean nothing

    http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/

  • Without the dock is not a great price for such an old device

  • +1

Not sure what all the naysayers are on about $250 shipped is the cheapest price for a brand name Tegra2 10.1 tablet. I just grabbed one as an upgrade from my Kindle Fire.

Thanks op, EBGames also supports Paypal which is quite handy.

  • Yeah this a pretty great deal, I would have jumped on it if I didn't have the "New" iPad, guess what I'm shopping for a keyboard dock for it…

  • -6

Picture is misleading. With the keyboard, it almost doubles the price.
    Therefore no deal!

    • Are you kidding me… Even without the keyboard its a good price, how "Therefore no deal!"?

      • Such a good deal that you gave it a positive vote I see.. Oh wait..

        • +4

You're seriously having a go at him for not +'ing the deal? Are people not allowed to have opinions unless they vote on the deal? Voting is complementary to commenting, you don't have to do it, to be able to express an opinion.

    • Yes, the inclusion of the dock is ambiguous, but this is still a good price for the tablet - $40 cheaper than the cheapest on staticice.
A fantastic bargain compared to previous, one-off deals? Perhaps not, but it is still the cheapest around

    • I think his point is that some people may only consider it a deal (and therefore accidentally purchase it) if it came with the keyboard.

  • +1

TF101 is still a very good ICS tablet. Better than the latest Ainol tablets from China.

    • +1

they all from china…………..like it or not.

      • The Chinese may consider Taiwan a part of China, but most Taiwanese don't.

        • plz, most Taiwanese does consider Taiwan a part of china, and it is.

    • Put aside the quality between them but isn't the Ainol tablets more powerful than TF101?

      • True. My Tegra-based tablet (Acer Iconia A500) can't even play YouTube HD smoothly on heavy action scenes. Those Amlogic or Rockchip tablets are much faster than the old Tegra.

But TF101 is better made though.

    • Certainly better than those cheap unknown Chinese branded ones. The IPS screen alone is a good enough reason to buy. I bought one over a year ago, still going strong. Running CM10 jelly bean; very smooth. A good buy for $248 if the dock is included, but otherwise there are newer better alternatives for a little more.

  • Nice price, looks like the deal expired?

  • +2

Still says In Stock for me, and I'm able to Add to Cart, and proceed all the way to payment (didn't go any further, as I'm not buying it)

    https://www.ebgames.com.au/tablets-154673-Asus-Eee-Pad-Trans…

    • thanks stig. you are right

  • I saw this deal in the George St store in Sydney a while ago, when the $249 deal was on for Acer A500. I guess you can pick up one from the store too.

  • +1

Did anyone else try IDDQD? :)

    • +1

if IDCLIP worked, I could walk right into an EB when they're shut and grab one myself.

  • +2

The description above states: "Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 16GB with Dock $248 delivered from EBGames". Perhaps this needs to be changed ?

    • Doesn't say so on the eBgames website.

      https://www.ebgames.com.au/tablets-154673-Asus-Eee-Pad-Trans…

If you do a CTRL+F search on the phrase "with dock", you'll see the description doesn't match.

Anyway now it says "in store only", so perhaps the deal has expired…

    • +2

Negging due to the STILL present "with dock" in the 2nd paragraph in the desc above "Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 16GB with Dock $248 delivered from EBGames"

      AND

mention of QWERTY keyboard in the 4th paragraph

I have no idea if it can be deleted but neg anyway for 'buyer beware'

I wonder how many people have gotten burned by this deal already as that dock isn't cheap.

      • +1

6 people negg'd my comment for saying the same thing. The whole thing is misleading. Buyer beware!!

      • I assumed it came with a dock. Thanks for pointing out that it probably doesn't (though I wasn't going to buy anyway as I already had the Lenovo 3G one).

      • It think it's a valid deal, so I won't neg it. But I think your comment is reasonable as gmatht pointed out, he (and probably other people too) didn't realise it might not have the dock.

      • The description was just copied from the EB page. Scrimshaw edited in a note, so it's not as if people (those who actually read the description thoroughly, anyway) were unaware. 'Buyer beware', in this circumstance, really isn't a legitimate reason for a neg, considering the aforementioned edit, and a large amount of conversation further up concerning the issue.

        • Ah, I assumed that the neg came before the edit.

        • Nope, Scrimshaw's revision was made at 21:28 on the 10/10/2012. This neg came only ~7 hours ago.

      • +2

I think its time for everyone to move on..

  • I received my tablet today. Not sure if it is the same for everyone but my tablet is a store demo. It is boxed will all original accessories but the tablet is used and has a small scratch on the back, screen is perfect howevr.

I am pretty disappointed with EB Games as I assumed it was brand new from the website description. I also wonder about the warranty coverage. I have emailed EB Games for an explanation and we will see how it goes.

    • did it come with a dock? EB have a 7 day return policy btw.

    • Pretty sure you aren't supposed to receive a store demo item. Did it come with a dock?

Also, I'd get it exchanged and explain to them that you got a store demo unit that was damaged.

  • Nope no dock, but I assumed it was tablet only, I wasn't looking to use the dock anyway.

This will prob be the same for each one purchased.

  • Yep recieved my one today. No dock. AND It appears used. Very dusty and lots of fingerprints. Seals broken. NO plastic bags/wrappers for the chargers. Didnt even come with a usb cable.

Called up EB and they told me to go to my local store and get a refund, which I will be doing today.

EDIT: lol the charger isnt even for the tablet. And the manual is for a Logitech bluetooth mouse. SO dodgy

  • I am so sorry and depress about my fellow ozbargainers are suffering because of my post. i will not post any deal from EBgames in the future and that store is ban for good in my life. truly sorry

    • +1

I think EB Games should be the one apologising here for using confusing product image + descriptions (no dock) and shipping demo/used unit.

  • No problems op, this is still a bargain. Just EB Games not stating that these are ex demos. Appreciate the tip and I may still keep mine depending on EB Games response. It is still a very nice tablet for $250.

  • Not the op's problem. Theres something wrong with EB online. When I returned the tablet today, the guy working there got his manager to come over and take a look because he couldnt believe how dirty/dusty the tablet was.

  • Got mine delivered today (no dock). Box and seal broken and had an extra instruction manual (Acer Iconia) in it. However, tablet appears to be in pristine condition and very clean. Not sure if I should ring up and complain about the box as the site did (and still does) say "Buy New".

    • When i called up, they said that because there's none left in their warehouse and only 2 in the country instore, my only option was to return it. Its really up to you whether you want to keep the tablet or return it. In my case, the tablet was in such appalling condition and with no charger cable that I had no option but to return it.

      • That's really bad as it is false advertising. Mine seems to be okay so far today. Upgraded the firmware a couple of times (incremental) to ICS 4.0.3 now.

  • The picture does give the impression that the keyboard dock is included so I called up to verify before ordering. They confirmed that the dock was NOT included.

Anyway, I ordered mine on 5/10 and received it on 11/10 and it did not come with the dock as expected. It was brand new, the packaging/box had never been opened and all the contents were there.

I've upgraded to the latest official ICS 4.0.3 and it is very stable and quite smooth.

The only problem I've had is the time and date resetting itself if I shut down the tablet instead of putting it on standby. It's happened twice.
