Another good Black Friday deal on Amazon - entry-level refractive telescope for those looking for Christmas gift ideas.

60mm Aperture and 700mm Focal Length, and comes with 20mm and 9mm eyepieces and smartphone adapter. 4.3 star rating on Amazon.

Better spec'ed than the Galaxy Tracker on Kmart selling at the same price and is probably the cheapest 60/700 telescope at the moment.

The 70/400 model is also available for $84.49 (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08HQFP9V3)

Any reviews on this one, is it good? Just want the simple one for kids stargazing

    • +1

You would not be stargazing with one of these.
Moongazing, if you are lucky you can see some planets like Jupiter or Saturn and not much else.

      • Uranus?

        • I am sure it can fit some people.

    Waiting for uranus comments

    • There's always someone.. 😌

Ah, the 'butt' of all astronomical humor!

  • Can anyone please dumb down the difference between the models? I want to get one before they sell out.
Is the 60/700 better for long distance and 70/400 will give bigger images at a shorter distance?
It's for me and a 5 year old.

Googled - seems like longer focal length is better for planets and the moon, whereas galaxies are better for shorter focal length

Assuming light pollution prevents anyone within 50km of cities to actually see any galaxies, right?

        • I do not think you could other galaxies with this one, this would be good for the moon and maybe some planets.

These would be ok for looking at the moon, if you tried to view planets, they would be tiny and blurry and hard to stay on target due to the mount type. Spend a little more if you want them to be used more than once or twice. I usually recommend astro binoculars for beginners, they can be used for terrestrial and astro, also easier to take with you on trips or car drives.

        • Upvoted your link for the portability but its twice the price though. Do they go on specials often?

@xdigger: This model can be picked up for around $100 (with promos codes etc) on the rare occasion. As far as astro gear is concerned $130 delivered is pretty good bang for buck to get started.

        • Thanks, grabbed a pair of those instead

          • @kujaultima: Which one did you get?

            • @xdigger: The skymaster 25x70. I think we'll definitely prefer being able to use both eyes, plus portability is a good bonus

Cheap and nasty (unfortunately). You'll be dumping it within a few weeks almost guaranteed…

    • I disagree. For a kids Christmas, they don't care or know about brands… all they'll remember is seeing the moon and saturn's rings for the first time. This is perfectly fine for a primary school child's first telescope. Might not be as sharp and detailed as the much more expensive ones, but this will work fine.

      • It would be their first time seeing the moon and Saturn's rings.
But it would also be their last…
Maybe the good reason to spend less on this.

  • With these telescopes, they are only good for the moon and some planets.
Looking at stars would be a blurry wobbly mess and a tracking nightmare.

Have a look here for a video on looking at planets, let alone stars and galaxies.

It is not said in the video, the Reality images appear to be with say a $1000 telescope with good eyepieces, with this scope it would look 10-100X worse.
Trying to find a planet and keeping in view in the eyepiece would be a frustrating challenge with this scope and mount, one bump it would be out of view, kids will bump it.

Only planet it could be really used for is with Earth.
Not good for neighbouring planets, just your neighbours.

Sorry only star you could really see would be the Sun, but don't do this as it also would be the last thing you see (from that eye), unless you have a really good solar filter.

  • Very bad feedbacks for this store.
