They are cheap plastic minis, think Risk.
Note this a very heavy going game, not a light bit of fun for the kids.

There are a whole lot of new add on side games apparently. I'm no expert on this but believe this one is a simplified version of the original version which is still available.

Seen this game around and looks interesting, RRP seems a bit misleading but looks worth it even just for the miniatures.
