On sale for Black Friday is one of TerraMaster's more premium NAS drives and not a bad option if you're looking for one on the cheap without building your own.

Featuring 4 SATA Bays with support for up to 20TB each, 2x M.2 2280 NVMe slots for storage/cache, 2x 2.5GbE LAN, Intel Celeron N5095 quad-core CPU, 4GB DDR4 SODIMM RAM (Upgradeable to 32GB), 2x USB 3.2 Gen2 10Gbps ports and HDMI.

A good option for those wanting to have network storage, Plex transcoding, Docker, video surveillance, syncing to OneDrive/Google Drive/Dropbox and more. TerraMaster's own operating system (TOS 5.1) continues to mature with recent features like TRAID which is basically Synology's SHR and new caching support. You can install another OS like TrueNAS or Synology unofficially too.

I own this one myself with the RAM bumped up to 16GB and works well for storing my 4K footage, security camera footage and running a few docker containers.

  • There is also a cheaper 1GB version for $240:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07ZV7K7GX/

    • ARM processor so it's a lot more limited in apps compared to x86. Still perfectly fine for network storage.

      • Yep, not good for Plex/Apps, but good for backups or network storage.

    • I have had this NAS for a couple of years, got it for the same price. For what it is, it is great. It isnt a powerhouse, but I chicked some old 6TB reds in it and ise it for a cheap NAS to NAS backup. Works fine and get about 95MB/s throughput

      • Its good for $240.

I spent the day yesterday watching comparisons on TerraMaster vs Synology. Did go right down the rabbit hole on getting this model TerraMaster then putting on unraid, but ultimately was convinced by everyone saying Synology software was so much better/stable and ordered a DS923+ for $750.

    • +1

DIY with Unraid for home use.

    • +1

My thoughts too. I prefer Synology software, but the TerraMaster specs are great for the price.

    • +1

DIY and unraid if you have a spare PC lying around. Otherwise QNAP/Synology are good.

      • +1

Pre wife and kids I would have loved to tinker with a DIY. But just don't have the time anymore and want something small form factor and easy out of the box that works for them, both as a media server and for backing up devices.

    • I'm in the same boat as you. So you ended up going with Synology?

      • I have a Terramaster NAS running Unraid. Its rock solid. The effort for getting Unraid running on it was minimal.

        • Why Unraid and not TrueNAS ?

          • +1

@ruprectaus: ZFS is a bit overkill for home.

Unraids just really easy to manage. When I was younger I would have used TrueNAS, now I just want to set and forget.

  • I recently picked up a terramster f2-223 2 bay. Installed extra stick of ddr4 and 1tb nvme in the second slot. Installed Truenas Scale on it. 2 X 8tb ironwolfs in a mirror.

Ran up a Plex container and used it for direct streaming, works really well. The CPU does bog down under high res encoding though. Ive had to disable it for now. Saved heaps on money compared to going Synology. Truenas Scale is just debian under the hood, so plenty of options.

    • Should've looked at the F2-423. Quad core processor and better integrated graphics for under $90 more.

  • Been this price all week.
I'm holding out to see if it drops more (likely Monday), or if something like the DS423+ drops at all.

    • +1

Normally it's $200 more and was earlier today. It won't drop further for the time being.

      • More thinking the Synology dropping from full price.
It's between these two, but not paying $200 plus extra for it.

  • Is the 2 bay on sale + specced the same? Don't really need 4 bay.

    • F2-423 yeah. Just 2 bay instead of 4

Also worth noting is that TerraMaster have a deal if you do a review and send them a screenshot, you get a free stick of RAM posted as a gift. Which makes you think twice about the validity of the reviews a bit…

    https://support.terra-master.com/quickguide/steps?product=F4…

  • I can't decide between this and the synology. I did read about software on this seems a bit dodgy but you can replace it. For the price, this seems worth it, but I'm not too technical, and the synology seems pretty plug and play.

Also i noticed there are two models there at very similar price points and the only difference is one is dual core and the other quad core. Theres the F4-423 (quad core) selling for $558.99 and a f4-223 (dual core) selling for $527.99. Does anyone know what this means exactly?

    • Yeh there is very little info on the f4-223 (dual core). For only $30 difference seems a no brainer to go for the quad core.

This guy has a lot of good reviews - https://nascompares.com/guide/synology-ds423-vs-terramaster-…. Maybe wait for a deal on the ds423+, if it comes down to $550ish again.

      • +2

        DS423+ around $550 is exactly what I'm waiting for… please blackfriday/cybermonday gods!

        • Exactly what I said above…
This has been at $558 all week. Waiting to see if Syn could drop the $200 to match!

      • There's plenty of info.. Basically just a dual core CPU.

  • @Clear Thanks for posting the deal. Mine arrived today. Do you have recommendation for the RAM? I read only certain RAM works?

    • +1

They limited RAM to only their own for a short time and took the limitation away after backlash.

I stuck some 2666MHz 1.2V RAM in I had lying around and it worked. I'm sure any other DDR4 SODIMM similar will be no issue.

  • Price is $759.99 now

    • +1

Yep. $200 off made it a decent purchase. Mine's supposed to arrive in a few days.
This will do as a Plex server for what we use, and to store a few important files on.

Was originally waiting to see if Synology would drop there's at all… but no joy.

      • Yeah I’m waiting for Synology price drop but I think I’m going to jump ship next time there’s a Terramaster deal
