Varia VS3 2nd Gen Coffee Grinder US$269 (~A$410) + Shipping ($0 with US$299.90 Order) @ Varia Brewing, Hong Kong

200
OURCOFFEESHELTER

EDIT: I was too keen and didn’t realise that the coupon code nullifies the free international shipping. If you meet the US$299 free shipping criteria by buying something else from them, it’s still a great deal. However, if you just want the grinder, I’d recommend buying from the Alternative Brewing eBay store which is still an ATL, at this link using HGTNOV.

Original post:

Had my eye on this grinder for a while now and I found a coupon code - OURCOFFEESHELTER - that brings it all the way down to just ~$410 AUD including free shipping. Unfortunately, I already ordered it this morning via Alternative Brewing's eBay using the HGTNOV code (though that price of $470 for local stock is still miles better than anything else I've seen).
The downside of ordering it direct is that it won't ship until next week, but it'll be express intl. from their manufacturer in China direct so I doubt it'll take that long.

For those who don't know, this is a very well regarded, slightly newer entry to the zero retention grinder scene with no competition until you hit the DF64 and can even compete with the Niche Zero, but depending on the style of coffees you like to drink this may well suit your tastes better. Plus, I happen to think it looks much nicer than the DF64.

  • Do you get stung with any import fees on this one?

    • Good question, I’m not sure to be honest. I’ve had some orders of similar value from come through customs recently and I didn’t get hit with any fees, but YMMV.

      • +1

I order this model and version at a slightly higher price from the same site, no import fees were required to ship it to NSW. Seems like it's low enough in terms of price that they didn't bother.

    • Under a grand so should be fine with GST and everything

    • There will not be an import tax if the product values are under 1000AUD.
This includes the shipping cost, from my own experience.

  • Pretty pricey. How do you rate this?

    • +4

I would say this is the steal, even at the normal price it's considered one of the best value single dosing grinders out there.

      • +2

Yeah this is very cheap for a premium grinder. Probably as good a value as you are going to find for a coffee enthusiast.

    • +3

One of the best ones out there if you're looking for an electric specialty coffee grinder. It's primarily aimed at espressos but can still do filter if you're not too picky.

In terms of power, most consider this to be a high end hand grinder with a motor attached. It's not going to process your coffee at lightning speed like other more expensive machines but it will be consistent if you're patient.

Overall, probably the best bang for your buck entry-mid level special home espresso coffee grinder considering the extras that come standard. Comes with a dosing cup, RDT spray bottle and bellows for near zero coffee ground retention.

  • I have this and paid $500 locally about a month ago. It wasn't a lot more than the specials direct, but I rather have local support. Seems like a good grinder. Debating whether to to hypernova as the reviews are very positive.

  • For those wanting a filter grinder, the Fellow Ode gen 2 is $499 on Alternative Brewing eBay store using the same code as above

  • as a small thumbnail, it looks like a microscope

  • +1

Unfortunately, alternative brewing either saw this or noticed an increase in sales. They've now put the price to ~$500 (after discount).

  • +4

For anyone who missed this, the current 15% Black Friday promotion means you can get the VS3 and Hypernova Ultra Burr bundle direct from Varia for A$484.34 (needs to be that bundle to stay above the free shipping threshold after the discount is applied).

    • +1

Yep, Black Friday code is still valid today too so I ordered this ^^ exact bundle just before (was even a couple of bucks cheaper due to currency) - very good value given the local retail pricing is still higher than this amount without the upgraded burr set.

      • +1

Nice! I would have found it hard to spend so much extra on the upgraded burrs, even though every review I've seen says they're worth it, so I'm glad this deal 'forced' me to splurge on them.

  • The OURCOFFEESHELTER code still works. When combined with the Black Friday deal you can get the VS3 shipped from Varia on 30th November for about $410 which includes the shipping cost.

    • How did you get that to work? When I try to have both BLACKFRIDAY and OURCOFFEESHELTER applied I get the below message and the total including shipping comes to A$459.95.

OURCOFFEESHELTER couldn't be used with your existing discounts.

      • Ah never got that error, maybe it has been patched.

  • This or Eureka Mignon?
Currently using Ozbargain's finest Breville DB + Smart Grinder

  • Anyone received a shipping notice yet?

    • My expected dispatch date was Nov-30, and with no dispatch notification received by Dec-4 I sent them a message asking about the status, and this was their reply:

Thank you for contacting us. You have nothing to worry about, your order has been processed and sent to the agency. In their turn they will hand the package to the shipping company.

You should receive your tracking number soon. There has been a few days of delay due to the busy holidays season.

      Thank you for your patience.

      Best regards,
      Variabrewing team

Cheers. I'd actually forgotten about it until today.

  • Got my shipping notice. The grinder is just sitting somewhere. Hasn't even made it to FedEx.
