Been looking for an SSD for my optiplex and unsure which one would be better bang for $

OP are you asking a question or posting a deal?

If it is a question and you are after a 2TB drive, these are currently the two best deals:

    WD Blue SN570 2TB $129 @ Centre Com
    Crucial T500 2TB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD $165 @ Amazon

    • Thanks for the recommendation! I guess both? I thought the Sabrent was a good price since the lowest according to camelx3 was $136 by 3rd party. I just wasn't sure if it's a much better SSD compared to the SP one which is quite cheaper.

This is a QLC SSD. The main issue is price. Even if you really want a PCIe gen 4 x4 2TB QLC SSD, it is best to aim at $119 or below price point (personally, I think even $119 is too high for 2TB QLC).

Using QLC, there is roughly 33% reduction in total NAND cells (vs TLC) so it should be at 67% of TLC equivalent price.

  • Silicon power or the lexar nm790 2tb?

SN570 2TB @ $129. Technically, it was $118 on 11/11. Generally, most Centrecom staff won't let you bargain, but occasionally, you could get a staff that's willing, but $11 doesn't seem likely. Hopefully, Centrecom runs a similar deal for Black Friday.

Lexar NM790 2TB's current RRP isn't that good to be honest.

      • Thank you, I'll keep waiting for the lexar then 🤞

I'd keep an eye on Crucial T500. If Crucial releases a firmware that addresses T500's weird slow down during SSD house keeping activities, T500's raw peak performance is above NM790.

Also, Lexar NM790 SSD software is quite average. Even if Lexar releases a firmware update later on, you need to manually download that and upload via that app. I do hope the Lexar app does some checks before flashing, otherwise if it blindly flashes any firmware you specify onto the SSD, it could easily kill the SSD. Lexar NM790 4TB has an issue in linux (not detected). Hopefully, newer linux distributions will put in a workaround for it, otherwise you will need to manually re-compile linux kernel to bake in the workaround.

          • @netsurfer: Thank you so much for giving great advice netsurfer really appreciate your help. I think I'll purchase lexar still just due to the amount of times I've gone back and forth on it 😂

            • @Boxcuttahz: Also worth keeping an eye out for a price drop on the KC3000, an upgrade on all mentioned in this thread so far. It's not on sale and only $189 for 2tb, which is already good value imo, if it gets to $175 or so it presents superb value and performance.

              • @agentzero: It is not as clearcut for KC3000. These new 232L SSDs (T500 and NM790), despite having controllers with less cores inside, have bandwidth advantage over KC3000 under low and general workload. They are also more energy efficient. Obviously, KC3000 is better if you really have the ability to maximise the use of PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs.

Bear in mind NM790 2TB needs to be evaluated at $129 (when it was first launched here in AUS).

              • @agentzero: Thank you agent zero I'll keep an eye out for this as well ☺
