  • Twinkly RGB squares price is quite cheap compared to US prices, but I read that their Android app having issue matching the colour of custom user uploaded GIF…

Twinkly Line pricing here is way too expensive, considering it only contain 1.5m light strip. US pricing is more reasonable (US$39.97 normal price), and US$19.98 on clearance.

    • $20USD IS $31AUD, so pretty comparative…

Sorry @scatman00, I'm talking about the Twinkly Line which sells for $139 and discounted to $69 (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/twinkly-line-rgb-starter-…) and not the Twinkly line extension kit posted by op.

Their extension kit are even more unreasonable priced, as the strip are actually ws2812b strip (or ws2813 at best). Unlike their Twinkly string LED which are more custom made and I can't find the equivalent so far…

        • Oh, in that case yeah that's a big jump.

Maybe it's just me but I think their stuff is way overpriced

    • Not just you. Me too.

  • I've been keen on this but as usual it seems like the software and user experience is shit. I have a couple of Divoom products that do similar things to Twinkly squares but they suffer from constant disconnects from WiFi. Divoom did well to cultivate a user base to create art work for their led displays but I had too many technical issues with the product itself. Seems like twinkly doesn't have a user base for content and the app to convert gifs has issues. So you're left with coloured patterns to play with.

    • True. Even assuming Twinkly software and user experience is OK, if you want to use Divoom GIF file (lowest resolution is 32x32 pixel), you need to buy at least 16 Twinkly panel (3x Twinkly Master Kit).

      • see my comment below for more info - their 32x32 is only 26x26cm. buying that many Twinklies would net you a display that's 64x64cm….
or to have a similar sized display (32x32) you'd just use 4 twinklies…

so price is actually pretty comparable when looking at size…
and arguably, 'pixel' displays are about the pixels, not the resolution

I agree that pixel display is not about resolution, but there is a minimum pixel limit to display an image. If the resolution is too low, the image will look more like a blob and doesn't resemble recognisable image. Having said that, maybe 16x16 pixel (4 Twinkly panel) is enough to display reasonably diverse image?

I wish Twinkly Line price here is closer to their US pricing, so I can harvest their controller (so I can still use their app and integrate it with my other Twinkly string) and mod it using ws2813 strip. Here's hoping for extra discount or coupon code on Black Friday :D

  • Feel like Twinkly had an opportunity to corner the market on controllable LED's but their software and innovation hasn't moved in 6-7 years. Something will come along thats cheaper and better soon, surely.

I guess their high price covers their warranty program.
Both strings I bought had a faulty LED. They sent me two new ones and let me keep the original pair.

If you're confident use WLED and LEDs from AliExpress and save an absolute fortune. If you want to buy something off the shelf try dig2go as it has everything you need in a controller. QuinLED also has bigger controllers and can be used for crazy Christmas displays— all using WLED

    • Do rate quinled great youtuber

  • some good prices.
the twinkly stuff is very well priced when it's on offer,
I've nearly 20 sets of them now, i've gone a bit nuts with the credit card when they've been on offer back in the UK - at 50% and 60% off after Xmas, it's hard to leave them on the shelf!
the RGB Squares are a great purchase here - they're still 200 quid in the UK,
    6 realistically gives a 16x24 matrix size
    each tile being 16cm x 16cm - gives you a nice 32cm x 48cm matrix…size - which is BIGGER than an A3 sheet of paper…

So, value proposition is quite clear here - you can make HUGE low resolution pixel displays, which are extremely easy to expand, map, program and integrate to smart homes.

Those more technical can purchase HUB75 style pixel displays and build / buy / program their own controller
or can buy one of the more generic prorgammable displays coming out - None of which are as currently easy to use as the Twinkly (at this price)

RE the comment re the DIVOOM - the Pixoo 64 is the biggest divoom make - it is 10.4 inches / 26cm on one side……it's a 64x64 matrix (4096 pixels)
FOUR Twinkly tiles would be 32x32cm, much bigger and the same price! (but would only be a 16x16 matrix)
Their Divoom pixel MAX is the closest comparison - it's similarly sized to a single Twinkly Tile at 17cm x 17xm, but double the resolution (16x16 - 256 pixels)

So, to compare to the Pixoo64 - resolution…4096 pixels and 26cm per side
you'd need 8x8 - SIXTY FOUR Twinkly tiles….this would net you a 4096 pixel display at 1.28 METERS per side…(YES, you can map multiple tile sets together to make HUGE displays, their marketing material shows an 8x32 display which would need at least two master tiles)

if you're comparing resolution to the Divoom Pixel max - (same size as one twinkly tile) and 1024 pixels - you'd need 16 Twinly tiles
BUT, the twinkly display would be 64cm x 64cm

SO, closest product really in resolution is the standard Divoom 8x8 - that retails for about 50-70 bux and is BIGGER at 20cm than the twinkly tile…

Hope that waffle makes sense - TLDR, BIGGNESS , RESOLUTION AND ease need to be factored in, these are a GREAT price

In terms of the size I don't see it as a pro or con. The pixoo is designed to be mounted or put on a desk. If you need something to cover a lot of space obviously that's what the Twinkly is for. Divoom did well by creating a community to create art for their devices. Endless lists of cool game animations etc. But the technical issues I had couldn't be resolved. My pixoo Max kept disconnecting from the WiFi. Everytime it happened it would stop displaying my selected art and I'd have to go through a lengthy reconnect process. I'm kind of over it because of that.
