  • I read an old post somewhere saying the support would be lacklustre, is this true?

    • it would be better than Asus and all Steam Decks are grey imports here so.. probably the best chance for support on a handheld

      • Doesn't matter if Decks are grey imports. They're still covered by standard ACL from the supplier.

    • +1

Lenovo software support isn't the best imo.

I only have limited experience with a Lenovo Yoga laptop though.

      • +2

Lenovo Premier has been one of the best warranty experience’s I’ve had - next business day repairs and the tech comes to your house to do the repair. If you wanted them to do something else (like use better quality thermal paste you have on hand instead of whatever Lenovo gives them) they’re usually pretty happy to oblige. But it tends to only be included with their business laptops (e.g. ThinkPads), you might have to pay to upgrade the warranty to that with a Legion Go.

        • That's not software support though

  • I want it but knowing the tech has probably already been improved a lot considering this is the first Gen of new hand helds I'll wait for the next versions

  • +5

I mentioned in the pre-sale post that the pricing for this machine in Australia is extremely unreasonable. In the United States Lenovo website, this machine comes with an unaltered CPU, and the price is also much cheaper compared to Australia.

    • Meanwhile in Japan I've seen this as low as 108,000 yen or about A$1115. For a lot of tech they get shafted significantly worse than we do.

    • -1

unfortunately it comes down to cost of shipping to Australia i.e. import tax. The U.S. has well established trade routes that make it more affordable to ship stuff there even though China is closer to us.

  • +5

Would love the bigger screen but overall still happy with the Steam Deck. Just hate the fact that Valve still hates us. Why on earth would they not offer it locally?

  • +1

Personally I would wait for a device with an OLED screen. I used a OLED Nintendo Switch and the colours just pop. LCD displays seem kinda muted in comparison.

  • These seem like a novelty.

having said that….whats the best handheld arcade machine for emulating everything up to ps2 and game cube

    • Any SD, Ally or Legion can do it

      • Damn I might need to get one,

And this thing will run my entire steam library at 60fps?

I'm just weary of spending so much money on tech that will be dated in 12 months time.

        • Sure and with up scaling the resolution 2x, 3x or 4x depending on the game.

@Dienk: Holy chit its an emulation beast!
Sorry for all the questions but I've been in the market for a small arcade / retro handheld that can emulate and was looking at those Alibaba $80 ones lol.
But this looks like its the best there is?

        • Majority of new games (anything beyond 2020) won't be running at 60fps. The deck is more aimed at older games and emulation.

          • @RetroMetro: Stranded Deep which looks better than most games runs at 90fps at 1200p high settings on 25W on Lenovo. Typical optimisation problems are why some games will run bad

    • +1

You don't need a PC handheld. You could look at an Android based device like Odin 2 https://www.ayntec.com/products/odin-2

Edited to say that I'm assuming you are not looking to play PC based games

  • +2

I tried this out in person yesterday compared to an ASUS ROG and OneXPlayer 2 and based on ergonomics alone the feel of the Lenovo was much more comfortable. Plus the Lenovo had a better screen than the ASUS ROG.

I'm almost tempted to get one now.

    • Where'd you try it in person? The Ally feels like shit in the hand

      • +1

Yodobashi in Japan 😜 The ally was underwhelming in so many ways.

        • Ahhhh… enjoy your trip!

I tried it at PAX, I didn't enjoy it in the hand. It feels quite light and cheap. Pair that with the overheating SD card reader issues and poor firmware design and you've got the most mediocre device imaginable for a high price.

I'm well tempted by one of these with how much time I spend on planes / long distance PT, but waiting to see how the firmware situation shakes out.

    • +2

On paper it looks solid, though I think the console-like experience of a Steam-deck OLED would win out over the raw performance. Also skeptical of the removable controllers as the lack of rigidity is what makes the Switch feel a lot cheaper in hand to me than the Switch lite.

I'm still waiting out for a somewhat affordable 5.5-6" handheld as all of these are unfortunately too big for me to have float around a bag all day, but I suspect I'll be waiting a while longer.

      • Can confirm it is massive in the hands and in a bag. I’m using it as a pc though so no worries there for me. The removable controllers feel much sturdier both in connection and weight compared to a switch imo.

  • +1

Even hardware inferior switch had oled for 1/3 of that price

  • Yeh I feel like something as powerful as this needs to hit the market that has OLED, VRR, 175hz and offers a customizable console like experience like the Steam Deck. I can see windows getting on my nerves without a mouse or keyboard.

Alternatively does anything exist that just mirrors your high-end-PC in a portable handheld?

    • +2

175hz is not distinguishable for the majority of gamers from 144hz, and the majority of AAA games will not run beyond 60fps. At that point may as well request 240hz OLED VRR which in standard monitor form would cost $3000 by itself.

    • +2

      You're missing the point.

Handheld games don't seek high framerates as the battery usage goes waaaaaaay up. They want divisible factors of the (high) refresh rate so that frame doubling or tripling allows super high battery efficiency.

That's why the new Steamdeck is 90Hz - to allow frame doubling for 45fps (which is fantastic playability wise - ever so slightly better than 40fps which frankly is really good as on OG Steamdeck), or frame tripling for 30fps.

VRR is sort-of similar to this (not really), but the simple divisible amounts above negate the need for VRR - which is a rarity in portable panels this size. In fact Valve has stated the popularity of the OG Steamdeck is the only reason they could actually get an OLED made to this form factor and these features.

      • thanks for explaining, good to know.

As a Steamdeck user for a while now - the only reason to get anything apart from a Steamdeck is if you absolutely require Windows, and frankly, apart from Gamepass, everything else gaming-wise runs on Steamdeck with some tinkering without Windows, unless you need productivity software…

Yes Epic Games work fine, yes GOG games work fine. Modding games is not exactly easy - but it can be done also.

There are a handful of games that the anticheat does not work 100% for on Steamdeck, but apart from that and Gamepass, everything else works *with some tinkering.

If you want a console-like experience, Steamdeck is also the only way to go (for kids for instance - no tinkering, just works on Steam games).
The Steamdeck will sleep the game with a single button press and resume the game right where you left off. Windows can not do this (and won't be able to).

The software/drivers/etc/controller configs on Steamdeck are leaps and bounds ahead of Asus, and reportedly Lenovo (no personal experience there) in terms of portability, control support, and so on. IT JUST WORKS. Even as Linux, it. just. works. It also has such popularity and user goodwill sentiment behind it that game devs now openly, specifically provide support for Steamdeck. Lenovo and ROG Ally will never get this…

Honestly apart from the screen, battery life and only one USB-C connector, the OG Steamdeck is hard to fault. And the new OLED Steamdeck fixes two of those three issues.

HODL and get the Oled Steamdeck.

Trust me. *unless you absolutely require gamepass

Lastly, the Steamdeck can run Windows very well, and can dual-boot relatively easily too! Having done this for a while I decided it was pointless and not worth it for the games and other things I want to do with Steamdeck and just killed the Windows partition for more Steamdeck space.

    • Thank you will hold out.
I just want it to emulate everything from Atari to GameCube and play my Steam Libary

      • Absolutely not a problem. Most Switch games are emulated fairly well on the Steamdeck even as it's such a low powered device…
For example Metroid Dread runs at a smooth 60fps…

PS2 and PS3 games present some problems (obviously PS3 is harder) whereas a bunch of PS2 games run fine.

Gamecube doesn't pose a problem (in fact it's recommended to play BOTW on GC emu rather than Switch for the better performance and mods).

I haven't tried Dreamcast and Xbox so can't comment, but everything you'd pretty much want to play PSX and down is likely flawless, and Switch games are pretty good.

      • I can emulate everything from MAME up to PS4 on my Steam Deck. I've got every single Soulsborne game running perfectly fine (including Demon's Souls and Bloodborne) on the one machine.

        • May I ask how you've got Bloodborne going? I wouldn't mind giving that a shot…!

    • Yeah that one button sleep option sounds very enticing.

I wonder what the pricing for the Oled steam deck will be…

    • When will the oled deck be officially available in Australia tho? It's been almost 2 years since launch and we still can't get a deck from an offical retailer.

      • +1

Sadly no one knows as Valve haven't hinted at anything..

I took the punt on grey import of the OG Steamdeck and haven't had anything worth being concerned come about as they are built quite well and I don't treat it like a toy. I could also repair it if need be and Valve's stance on repairability is pretty good.

If that's a dealbreaker for you that sucks…!

        • hoping to get an official release mainly because I don't want to pay a higher price to a reseller but yeh it doesn't look like Valve will make it happen any time soon.

    • +4

Also to add: As an aside, some games arguably work better on Steamdeck than PC, thanks to the shader precaching available (automatically downloaded). Elden Ring for example, has no stuttering on Steamdeck, as opposed to the PC version which to this day still suffers from. Yes you are lowering settings to get smooth 30/40fps on Elden Ring, but the sturrering is gone, if that bothers you.

I have not bought a single device in the past decade or so (or even more) that has been as awesome and fun as the Steamdeck - and I've owned all consoles apart from a PS5. Granted, I have a massive Steam library and have primarily been a PC gamer for 30 years, (and I'm not against tinkering if need be) so I have bit of a bias, but the Steamdeck truly is a paradigm changer.
If I had to guess why it's so good, it's primarily the good hardware (now even better with the Oled SD), combined with outstanding software support.
It was a bit shakey at the start a year or more ago, but now the SteamOS support is really, really good.
This is where the competitors really can't catch up or compare.

    • where do you buy the deck ?

    • I’m now considering ROG Ally or Legion Go because of PC Game Pass.

I currently have OG Steam Deck with Windows 11 to access the PC Game Pass library (and avoid cloud streaming. And don’t worry, I still have SteamOS on a separate partition). But damn the fan is loud. It would definitely annoy fellow passengers on a plane or train.

Or will the improved cooling in the Steam Deck OLED alleviate this issue for me, I wonder …

  • Still not sure between this and the ROG ALLY…

    • Can hold on for reviews first.

      • +2

        There plenty of reviews already

    • +3

The Legion is definitely not without its issues.
It uses a native portrait display panel and therefore there are some problems when it comes to displaying some games that always look for a native landscape display.
Some will look weird, some will outright crash and refuse to run.

Check out this review, the display panel drama starts at the 13:00 mark.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_8mAxSysP0

      • That's really interesting. AFAIK the Steamdeck is portrait native also as when setting up a dual boot option a while ago a bunch of the linux (?) kernel stuff was in portrait mode. That implies that's its the usual Windows BS stuffing things up (aka DirectX)

According to ProtonDB, Soul Reaver 2 (for example) seems to work ok on Steamdeck https://www.protondb.com/app/224940?device=steamDeck

    • If this hadn’t come out I would have gone the Ally. I think a gig difference for me is that this has the trackpad. Made it all much easier to set up imo.

      • The trackpad is immensely valuable. Windows 10/11 just aren't really set up for touch screen use…

  • Hopefully JB will sell this. I have gift cards waiting.

    • +1

Its on their website, but you're looking at paying $1500 unless you can pricematch it.

    • I was able the price match.
Got it for $1349 , and warranty till 2028 for $200

  • Steam Deck is 800p 90hz (OLed)

This one is 1600p 144hz. Legion would be my choice.

    • +2

SMH - have a look at one of my posts above to flognuts

  • The ultimate steam deck killer

Funny how everyone just wants to fork out more money for something that retains the same APU but now got an oled screen, so you can play games withe the same fps as two years ago but with more vivid colours…..

People are either insanely rich or stupid to the point of no return

Gotta give big Gabe credit …..

    • +2

OLED is a game changer though, however the smaller the screen the less its benefits become visible.

    • +1

It's not that simple, but fair enough.

Simple question - have you used a Steamdeck for a few days over a few games?

    • so you can play games withe the same fps as two years ago but with more vivid colours…..

Yeah it really sucks playing GTAV at a constant 60FPS with pretty decent graphics.

Guess I'll just go hit the power button in the middle of my game, cry a bit, come back in a few hours and resume from the exact same point I put it to sleep at and continue as if nothing happened.

    • +1

Funny how everyone just wants to fork out more money for something that retains the same APU but now got an oled screen, so you can play games withe the same fps as two years ago but with more vivid colours…..

I think you're missing the point of these portable consoles. The screen is everything. If you don't care about the screen then you might as well get a PS5 or full sized PC and play on the big screen.
Nintendo did the exact same thing with the OLED switch and it has been a big hit.
I agree that Valve should have considered increasing performance but I'd rather have the OLED.

  • I am confused as to how you get double cashback if you order from the Education store? It seems to be only 5%.

  • +1

Hi all. I don’t know why but I seem to have received my Legion Go about two weeks early. I tried to use this newsletter deal when I first ordered but never received the email. Contacted Lenovo support through chat and they gave me the 10% off. Super impressed with it so far. Really easy to set up and download all games from steam, epic and Microsoft. If you attach it to a monitor extend the screen, don’t duplicate.

    • How is the fan noise? Seeing a fair few complaints on Reddit.

      • You can definitely notice it at times. I wouldn’t say it’s a deal breaker though. Not loud enough to distract you when playing a game.

  • +4

The software for this is so garbage it either breaks most of the time, is missing critical features, little to no customizability options, is very unreliable in basic day to day conditions

The fact that the latest graphic drivers are still 3 months old with no new releases or even mentions of when theyll be available should spell it out clearly for anyone. People are sideloading amd drivers and using bootleg unverified bios from random people to fix issues that Lenovo should have.

If we can't get GameDay drivers on the Legion Go let alone even a driver that isn't several months old, it's a strong indicator of how they're going to treat software going ahead.

    • Because legion space is just another windows app, it just refuses to work at times when other things are full screen as it is always fighting for priority because its not built into the OS on a kernel/with higher elevated permissions. You have to press the button to open up Legion Space several times where it'll flicker to open and either crash itself or the game 4/10 times.
    • GPU driver crashes effectively breaking the screen and locking in into portrait mode.
    • Basic features for customizing thumbsticks, binds, etc are missing and no mention of when we can see them. Without something similar to Steam Input I don't see the input system becoming powerful enough for anything more than basic binding.
    • You can't change a lot of functions because they're not even options to change, there's just missing fine tuning everywhere…
    • Gyro is broken/not working effectively.
    • No power controls
    • Fan controls not working
    • no fps limiter / vsync working
    • no way to adjust trackpad sensitivity/dpi
    • gyro isn't working properly
    • no way to bind anything beyond xinput so you're stuck with binding the basic buttons (no combos, macros, or anything beyond basic button press)
    • The nature of the screen orientation makes a bunch of games not work/crash outright. Requiring debugging/tuning/figuring things out.
    • A lot of games stutter and have issues until the shaders are built up because of shaders VS deck.
    • Drivers breaking constantly, wifi being buggy, amd drivers uninstalling itself/crashing, Bluetooth not working consistently.
    • Personal tidbit and this isn't the biggest deal but the entire menu/color scheme and art style look like it's out of 2009. It feels like I'm using a vintage/early touch stylus mobile.

I don't think it will be fleshed out enough until 6-9 months. Legion Space, fundamentally is just shit, which is fine but there's no promise or indication of how far they'll go to maintain, fix and develop this.

Half the things don't work and 90% of the features I use daily on STEAMOS just aren't there and there's no time line for release for any of these.

They're better than Asus/Ally, but having used one for a week now, I would much rather the new Deck OLED.

People underestimate the importance of software/how bad windows on handheld is until they've either inevitably run into issues or seen how much greener the grass is on the other side.

Im not the only one running into this either so it's not a one off thing, it's across the board.
    https://youtu.be/u4sr3mKKhkY?si=WB8ZnhYzPgvqARls

    • +1

This is what I've been trying to intimate with my comments above - the software is what makes the difference, not the hardware capability…

Until people have used the handhelds for a few days or a bit longer they just don't get it, and seem to read into the resolution and power capabilities way too much…

If you want power you still can't get that in a hand held - just get a gaming laptop.

If you want a console-like experience that just works, there is no peer to the Steamdeck.

Valve have put the time in and committed to making the OS specifically work for them in the best way possible, in the areas that matter when you actrually play a game - drivers (lol yes even in Linux, if you set the right Proton version, virtually everything runs), power settings/transparency, controller mapping (perhaps the best thing out of all of what they've done - allowing community profiles), game compatibility ratings via Steam, sleep/restore capability and shader caching for no stuttering.

No you can't play Cyberpunk at 60fps, but you can damn well play it with settings turned down, and have a great time doing it.

  • There is a $400 cashback on Lenovo

  • How do you get the 10% for signing up? I'm not seeing it anywhere?

    • Just use livechat to get 10% off, and the $1 mouse which you cant get without livechat quote

      • I don't want a $1 mouse. Already have too many mice lol

        • in that case, its on the footer on the bottom left

@landoleon: Found it! Thank you!!! Popped up when I went to sign up for the rewards program.

  • $1 mouse deal has expired…. :(

  • Does anyone know if the extra cashback work with the 10% discount?

    • I'm wondering similar but the cashback while paying with zip. Running out of time haha

  • Anyone managed to double this up with the 10% zip deal as well?

  • +4

Picked mine up today, absolutely mint. All this “tinkering” nonsense from steam deck fanboys I just don’t get. Had a deck and this thing craps all over it, the screen is amazing as well. Seriously you down load windows updates like you would on any pc it;s automated. You go to Lenovo website and download the various updated drivers for it with the click of a button, watch a 15 min YouTube vid on optimal settings and you’re done. I’m gaming on it now, amazing.
