A ~$30 price difference is considered a significant price drop and mods normally allow this
I updated that post earlier in the comments about the price change so it would not be a double as it was less that 24hours still, I did not post it for that reason as well. Got posted anyway.
This deal showed up at 7am today .. i was going to post it but i think we will see this price on the black Friday sale give or take a few $ :) .. i guess if you need something now its good
My thinking too
Yeah, also, Seagate 530 2TB was ~$2 more in the morning (but looks like it's sold out now, was showing 3 in stock in the morning).
Hard to post a SSD deal after Samsung 990 PRO 1TB M.2 SSD $55.92 Delivered @ Amazon UK via AU back in July. Hope to see that kind of deals in the upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.
That was a price error though, it’s like expecting hdd’s to go to $15 a tb again because of the amazon price error
It was honoured. Couldn't resist. I don't really need 990 Pro so it was a FOMO purchase.
Too many SSD deals on OZB… just need some dodgy excuses to resist them.
Was planning to pick a 990 pro 2TB, but at 50$ less it's a sweet deal. Bought one!
Funnily enough when I ordered the 980 pro from Amazon US last time they sent me the 990 by accident =)
How would warranty work if there was some issue with the SSD?
Contact Amazon AU. Samsung AU won't touch non-AU stock.
i heard SSD price increasing back soon
If you checked the link to the article posted by an OZBer on a recent SSD deal, Samsung is planning to reduce making so many NAND chips to stop the price fall. Solidigm / SK Hynix will follow (Solidigm has recently reduced staff to cut cost). However, the expectation is YMTC won't reduce output. Also, YMTC stockpiled lots of previous gen NAND due to US sanctions (but those ones aren't the ones people want, they have old data read issue). Toshiba… no info at the moment.
SSD makers still have old stock to clear and reducing output is not a long term solution. The reality is that there is still a profit margin on these SSDs. The tricky part is a lot of SSD makers already started doing cost cutting measures with a lot of them starting to use YMTC previous gen NAND and that's not good.
Decreasing output is a solution, selling flash at a loss isn’t a long term solution (current nand prices are not profitable and there is no profit margin just look at micron and Samsung’s recent quarterly earnings
Decreasing output is not a long term solution. Samsung fabs their own memory and NAND chips. Also, I am referring to retailer's margin. For example, we know full well Centrecom won't sell at a loss. However, there was once when I purchased a discounted SSD and some other items, the staff was nice and I was paying by cash, he gave me additional discount.
NAND manufacturers earned $10.287 billion in Q4 2022. The real issue isn't people like us not buying SSDs. The drop in enterprise market demand is an issue. Gartner's current forecast is there will be a big growth in this segment in 2024. It is just 2023, there is weak demand and over supply.
Right now, I am seeing Samsung, Seagate and WD offering discounts. Sure, Lexar has raised price here, but let be real here. Samsung doesn't give a damn about PCIe gen 4 x4 DRAMless segment in consumer space. WD has introduced a cost cutting version in that segment. Maxio controller and YMTC latest XTacking solutions are lucky there is currently a market downturn. Phison has a controller that can really give that Maxio controller a hard time, but SSD makers are not interested in that market segment (subpar margin, unsustainable).
Smaller and glue and go SSD makers (Kingston, Team, PNY, Silicon Power etc…) are doing sneaky cost cutting in a lot of their products. They don't want to pay Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron or Toshiba for increased NAND prices. Will try to point out dodgy swaps. Most of us are buying SSDs which are overkill for us, a lot of time out of FOMO.
Lexar has to source NAND from YMTC and controller from Maxio. Then, there is the transportation cost, Lexar ANZ, retailer. Glue and Go SSD makers are having their margin squeezed by the big guys. Right now, a number of glue and go SSD makers changed the NAND from TLC to QLC and still have the nerve to increase prices. Best to avoid those instead of numbing your brain to think NAND prices are going up like crazy.
Samsung, WD, Crucial, they make their own NAND chips and some of them make their own controllers. Amazon's big buying power, huge volume, is something they like. Assuming there is still excess stock, who cares if Amazon forced them to clear their inventory at Amazon warehouses. They are big enough and they will live. If the prices gone up early 2024, so be it. Less FOMO SSD purchases.
Dram and Nandflash production cut from Hynix, Samsung and Micron.. due to low demand and china's next to zero demand. Priced will still stay low even with the production cut
Bought this last time for $167 including the heatsink, was hoping for a repeat
Was able to win a eBay US auction for a 990 Pro 2TB. $172.3 AUD after GSP + GST. Opened but never used.
I was given a 980 Pro 2tb 1month before they launched in september 2020.
Still work very well today.Later on I was going to get a product called "990 Evo"
It was supposed to release last year.
But was never seen.
Samsung is probably the only few brands that can sell their 3 years old SSD and still call it a top tier drive. If you actually push the SSD constantly, 980 Pro is still decent enough.
PCMark 10 Drive Consistency Test:
Score Samsung 980 Pro 2TB 1822 100.00% Lexar NM790 2TB 1328 72.89% PCMark 10 Data Drive Benchmark:
Score Samsung 980 Pro 2TB 2854 100.00% Lexar NM790 2TB 2619 91.77% If all you care about is light usage with low queue depth, then NM790 is fine. PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs are overkill for most people. Otherwise, if we all utilise them fully, DRAM SSDs would come out on top. Also, on linux not detecting NM790 4TB issue, let's hope the wait at least 1 second workaround gets implemented in future linux distributions soon. Wouldn't it be nice to get a proper firmware fix for that issue from Lexar, Maxio or YMTC?
Just got this for a new build, was eyeing the 970 at the education store pricing and this is only a few bucks more! Thanks :D
might go lower for BF ?
Yeah.. i'm saving for Dolliery doo's for black friday .. don't really need anything but dont want to miss out on a good deal.
Don't give into the FOMO bro, if you don't need anything just simply don't buy anything.
Is this recommended over the 970 EVO Plus for reliability and performance? Is there a better solution if one wants the 4TB version instead?
Thanks in advance.
4TB Costs way more
Not really, both are similar in terms of reliability. The 970 Evo Plus was probably less problematic compared to the 980 Pro until the 980 Pro received a firmware fix.
If you are after 4TB, probably more cost effective and better to go for a 4TB TLC Gen3 drive with DRAM.
Can I buy this with a enclosure and use it like an external SDD?
Of course!
Wow so cheap!!
The post from this morning should be updated instead. I didn't post this myself as it would have been a dupe: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14536483/redir
