16GB of ram, should probably add that to the title.

    • -6

      16GB!? It’s almost 2024 should be 32GB minimum

      • You can get up to 128GB as optional with M3 Pro

        • +1

          But now’s staring at 8gb instead of 16gb for 14 inch M2

      • If using native apps, Apple reckons their 16GB is as good as PC 32GB.

I always recommend getting more ram though, if you do something ram intensive then you already know this though.

      • +2

Have a look at the benchmarks. The M1 Pro 16Gb is literally neck to neck with 32Gb version in almost every kind of test, including extreme stress tests.

Future proofing is not a valid argument imho because you’ll be buying a new MacBook before you will need 32Gb of ram, and when that happens you’ll be better off with a newer Mac than with a 5+ years old one with 32Gb of ram

        • +1

I was mocking the usual "8GB is not enough" comments

        • You would not see much of a difference in benchmarks as long as the task fits the RAM, but once the task you run requires more RAM the performance may sharply drop 10-100x due to the swap being used.

If you are reasonably confident your tasks are not going to change for the next 5 years, it's ok to get the cheaper 8GB/16GB/32GB option.

        • EXACTLY my point every year

      • yeah for 4k and 8k video editing or raw formats I agree 32gb is a must but not all of us are doing that.

      • +1

remember the days when you could upgrade your own ram in a laptop?

      • Ludicrous. People like you are pathetic for trying to make these products less reachable for those of us that operate fine with 8 and 16GB.

Officeworks has the 1tb listed cheaper than this but very limited (possibly no) stock https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/macbook-pr…

    • +2

Unfortunately not showing stock anywhere. Would be a good deal!

      https://officeworks.youinstock.com.au/search/mbp21161sl

      • That same version is $2879 for a refurbished.. $700 cheaper brand new and upgraded storage. This post is far from a bargain…

    • +1

It says 10c CPU and 16 core GPU so it's a better model then in the post?

    • +1

When in stock, price will be adjusted to >$3000 for this one.

  • Good deal for the OG of the M series. The price is actually the same as the previous refurbished batch, but still probably the best value for money MacBook right now

  • yeah m1 is good but i would be going at least a m2 now

    • +2

For the average office worker (I call us the "Chrome Drones") the M1 Pro is amazing bang for your buck. No Windows system comes close in price and performance.

      • Honestly my 14 Pro M1 Pro is still more than fast for everything I use it for: Lightroom, Photoshop, Handbrake encoding, light video editing and everyday tasks. Not once have I wished it was faster. For 99% of users the M1 Pro is still way more than enough

        • yep I have used the base M1 in 13 macbook pro with 16gb of ram and 1tb storage and it still pretty amazing in final cut pro for 4k compressed and raw footage, it even can drive obs with full blown streaming at 720p and 1440p recording with no sweat!! But I am thinking in terms of apple stopping macos updates, they seem to be narrowing the list of macs that get new updates now.

          • @kungfuman:

in terms of apple stopping macos updates, they seem to be narrowing the list of macs that get new updates now.

That’s for older Intel Macs. The end of updates for any Apple silicon is still a long way off. That’s not a valid argument anyway, as there is no guarantee that the update that removes support for M1 wouldn’t end the M2 as well (both 5nm?). But again, it’s all baseless speculation.

@Nedkellyinthebush: I think Apple are looking for money grabs, they don't particularly care about the users any more, so if they choose to block M1s in the near future just so you upgrade. Not saying it will happen but I think the way things are going with Apple, they will most likely will.

              • +1

@kungfuman: Is that a new revelation to you , do you think apple ever cared about users?
The fact is , apple works ! I've watched my daughter's MacBook air's keep going from years 7-12 . Apart from my youngest spilling water on her laptop , they have served them well .

        • +2

I think M1 was too powerful when it came out.

When you look at M2, the processor is only slightly faster. And on the downside, the SSD is quite a bit slower than the M1 (unless you get 1Tb+)

Looking at the M3, overall it is faster than M1, but not much faster than M2. Additionally, it has slower memory bandwidth than M1 and M2. That is not a huge deal, but clearly leaves it kind of nerfed and adds to the argument that M1 Pro is excellent value for money

          • -3

@Nedkellyinthebush: I think apple are just producing crap now they don't care about improving things dramatically any more. or innovating. its just puting old things back on that they took away in previous years. They aren't moving forward or have any direction any more, and this is why we are getting the macs we are getting now. I have said it once and I will say it again Apple died when Steve Jobs did.

            • @kungfuman: lol what are you even talking about?
iPhone X was a huge innovation
              Mac silicon is innovation
Apple headset looks cool and time will tell but it’s literally ahead of its time

And the fact that Apple is able to milk their customers dry is the proof that their products are simply ahead of the competition. Do I like this? Hell no, but I’m certainly not going to buy a constantly overheating intel laptop, nor an android phone that no matter how you put it is nowhere near the iPhone performance (and yet still cost thousands)

              • -1

@Nedkellyinthebush: Don't know how to tell you this but Apple have been down this road before, they used to have there on cpus ever heard of the G3 or the G4 powerpcs? or power books? They reached a peak and couldn't keep up so they were forced to go with intel. Now they have come full circle back to making cpus for there mac range again. iPhone X was during the Steve jobs era. The Tim cook era of "innovation has been very little improvements. I like apple products I have had them since 2005, but back then Apple was very good. But since Tim cook took over it hasn't been the good progression for the company, since all they do is keep up and not do anything else. Apple has only ever made 3 revolutionary product and made it mainstream, the Macintosh, the iPod, and the iphone. These products shaped tech today, there has been nothing since then that has done anything that impacted an entire industry.

                • @kungfuman:

they used to have there on cpus ever heard of the G3 or the G4 powerpcs?

Apple didn’t make the PowerPC cpus.

      • most office workers are provided with windows laptops. very few office workers get macs lol.

      • Sorry, bot by a mile, when it comes to durability.

I might have agreed with you a few days ago, but not now. I explain why in my comment below detailing how my daughter's MacBook Pro cracked from doing something I have done literally I can't remember how many times with cheap Acer laptops over a decade and that as per one comment in an article about a lawsuit over this very issue in America, "Out of the 20 Macbook we have here, 3 have this problem."

    • +1

Depends on your budget. M1 is considerably cheaper, yet the performance is not that far away from M2

    • M1 is still very decent

  • +1

I bought one new (not refurb) in May at the same price. Since M3 is out now, I would expect the price to come down a bit more.

  • Is boot camp still a thing?

    • Negatory

    • died with the change from Intel chips. Try Parrallels

Can someone please explain to me how to stack with the 15% Discount Gift Cards ? Many thanks in advance.

    • Buy discounted gift cards. Add them to your apple id (via store on your iphone for example). When you check out it will give you the option to choose your balance to pay.

  • anyone know if the refurbs from apple come with the originals boxes?

    • +1

Plain white box. Pretty sure it's all described on the refurb store

      • do they look new or full of scratches and stuff? or is it luck of the draw?

        • +2

Looks new, but upon closer inspection I found a very very small (tiny) scratch on mine, which I have returned. As for the battery, it was 100% with 3 battery cycles

          • @Nedkellyinthebush: o so not used and may have slight marks maybe ok thats not too bad I guess for the price they are charging. Still cheaper than student pricing, and jb hifi 10% off deal.

        • I bought a refurb Macbook Pro from Apple and there was no scratches or marks and if there is you can take it back.

        • Looks pretty new to me. Bought multiple iPads and Macs throughout the years.

If you find any scratches I think you can just return it.

  • Thanks ordered one

    • Hi Casho

Please read my comment below and be informed as I wasn't before buying two of these.

      Cheers!

  • MacBook Warning! "Out of the 20 Macbook we have here, 3 have this problem."

Read below (including info from the lawsuit in America) and think twice about buying, and times that by 10, for your children.

Owner, through my children, of two MacBook Pros (the one concerned bought through the school's Apple supplier - paid $2,885 including case) and just had a, bugger my claim re Australian Consumer Law, bad luck, phone call from Apple, so I would like to warn other parents.

My 14 year old daughter simply closed the laptop on some papers (something I would have done on my cheap Acer laptops over the years 100s of times), a few page draft handed back to by her teacher and thus witnessed by her. This was enough to crack the screen, discovered when she opened it next period before taking it to the school's IT department. Apple basically indictated that this was as per what could be expected to happen, given what she did and was thus her fault. And looking this issue up, this seems common both with regard Apple's woeful response and in occurance (3 in 20 according to one commentor) so surely a design fault?. As confirmed in these articles on a lawsuit in America…

Apple Now Facing Class Action Suit for Cracked M1 MacBook Screens
By Anton Shilov published September 17, 2021

'The firm is accusing Apple of knowingly selling laptops with fragile displays that tend to crack under normal use in some cases and then refusing to repair them without charge.'

'a large number of customers who have experienced unexpected screen cracks and were forced to pay $600 ~ $850 to Apple for repairs. Apple insists that screen cracks were not its fault, but were caused by mishandling or by a small item or particle becoming lodged between the keyboard and screen.'

Apple hit with lawsuit claiming M1 MacBook screens are 'defective'
Mike Peterson Apple Insider | Sep 15, 2021

'models ship with a concealed defect causing their screens to become easily cracked.'

"These problems often develop while the Class Laptops are closed; many Class Laptop owners have reported that they first observed cracking and/or display malfunction when opening their devices from a closed position. Others report that their screens cracked as they adjusted the screen's viewing angle in an ordinary manner," the lawsuit reads.

Comment section: "It's a bit hit or miss. Out of the 20 Macbook we have here, 3 have this problem. Maybe a bad batch? We sent them back and got new ones that have not given this issue so far"

Ironically this all happened on the day I would have ordered a MacBook for my other daughter heading into year 7 next year, but undecided between air and MacBook. That's now not going to happen and I will be selling the repaired MacBook Pro asap.

Incidentally, my daughter told me the 4 months into owning the laptop the school at assembly and by email sent out care advice that included this 'Never close the lid on a pencil or pen left on the keyboard (could crack the screen).' Okay, but papers are not a pen, pencil or the equivalent, in physical substance or common sense use. By the way here, from the email mentioned above, is what the school sent suggesting how also undurable these Macs (almost all others have the Air) are when it comes to a bit of rain, because I am sure the girls aren't using them as umbrellas…

    Dear all Students,

With all of the recent rain that we have been having, we have seen a spike in laptop repairs due to water damage. I thought it would be a good reminder to send this email to you all with tips on taking better care of your laptop.

  • The $2,229 one is out of stock now. Just missed this.
