Long term gigabyte ownership experience, thermals?

    Curious

    • +6

I've used the Aero and G5, both from previous gens. I found the Aero to be surprisingly cool even during intensive tasks and gaming. The G5 on the other hand was terrible. It ran hot and throttled constantly (which why I returned it and bought an Aero). Maybe I just got a dud unit, as the temps were far higher than what the reviews claimed. Could not fault the build quality or performance of either though (there was some throttling on the Aero, which was to be expected).

      • thanks Aero for my use case, thanks for the detail

    • +2

I've a aero 17 with 3080ti (which I'll be selling soon). GPU and CPU both reach around 90 degrees during heavy game play. The chassis is metal so gets pretty hot but usable during gaming. The whole chassis acts as a heat dissipation system so that helps keep the temps down-ish. I would say thermals aren't too bad but nothing to call home about. Although the tdp for mine is limited to 105w, I haven't seen temps reach a point where thermal throttling became a problem. Note that they have coil whine so if that's something you can't handle, keep away.

      • Even if Aero on the high end side can get this hot, you guys reckon the new 2023 Aorus series will be good?

        • Auros might be better because the chassis is bigger and designed for gaming while Aero is a content creator / all-rounder laptop. Best to look up heat maps on notebookcheck.com

Decent laptop, hate the 'gamer' aesthetics

  • This is really cheap for a branded gaming laptop.

  • -8

Not sure an 8GB 12th Gen i5 with 512GB of SSD and 6GB of mobile 4050 could be considered to really be a gaming laptop in 2023. Most new games will squash it like an asthmatic ant with their system requirements. 2024 will get worse.

Probably best considered as a generic home laptop, with occasional light gaming on Minecraft.

    • +7

If you want more RAM. You could just upgrade the RAM by buying a 16GB RAM or 32GB RAM kit. It has removable and replaceable RAM. It's upgradable to 64GB of RAM.

The SSD is probably upgradable too.

And 6GB of video RAM is still plenty for esports games and even most AAA games if you lower the display settings a bit.

      • -6

People seem not to realise that 6GB, particularly with a mobile 4050, won't cut it going forward. It's no good downvoting - current AAA games won't run on it, and it's only going to get worse. A year or two ago, you might have gotten away with calling it 'gaming', but with the APU based alternatives on the starting block, this has virtually no longevity.

So I standby viewing this as a generic home laptop, only.

        • +26

Ah yes, because I'm buying a sub $1000 laptop expecting it to run top of the line, resource heavy games at maximum settings for years and years.

          • -5

@[Deactivated]: As I say, you want to play Counterstrike or Minecraft, it will be fine (though so will most other current laptops).

Just pointing out that its not a 'gaming' laptop in 2023 - its not future proof, its not even present proof. Simple fact.

            • +5

@sane: I just don't know why in one breath you say it plays games then take issue with calling it a gaming laptop. This will perform far better than computers in the same price bracket that have spec's more aimed at office use. Mentioning that it won't perform into future releases is more than valid, but the negs on your post are coming from your weird and unnecessary issue with terminology.

        • +15

It’s got a 1080p screen. Stop pushing things that don’t matter. If you want to game on QHD or 4K, get a desktop.

        • +1

People seem not to realise that 6GB, particularly with a mobile 4050, won't cut it going forward.

If it was only 4GB I would agree, but at 6GB the VRAM isn't really the limiting factor on chips at this end of the range where you are playing at 1080p.

Take for example the RTX 2060 desktop which falls in a similar performance category as the RTX 4050 mobile.

~2 years ago Nvidia released a 12GB refresh for the 2060 and that doubling of the VRAM only amounted to something like a ~5% performance boost.

edit: Here's a review of the RTX 2060 12GB refresh.

Compared to 6GB model it came out on average ~4% faster at both 1080p and 1440p.

        • +2

But it's only a 1080p screen, 6GB will be fine for that.

        • People complain about 4050 won't run current AAA games, while here I still have a 1650 laptop runing starfield just fine.
I still consider it gaming laptop, eventough I have 2070 and 3080 version that mostly I use for work.

    • +1

Some what have to agree with you sane. This cheap laptop should probably classified as low-end gaming laptop in 2023, don't expect to play many of the current AAA games well unless you are OK with under 60fps on 1080p resolution.

      • Are LOL and Minecraft AAA games?

    • -2

You're not wrong but this is OzBargain. You'll get down voted by people who simply don't know any better (but for whatever reason feel the need to express their disapproval on a topic which they do not understand).

      • -2

Just trying to make sure people don't get the wrong impression of this laptop's longevity for gaming. Gaming is currently going through a 'relaxation' from the limits of 8GB VRAM, like a wasteband after an Xmas meal.

It'll probably settle on 12-16GB and FSR/DLSS for resolution/frame rate as the norm for the next 3-4 years, with AI inference capability being the new battleground (eg Win 12 req). With Meteor Lake (laptop only) and Strix Point coming next year, laptops like this are getting the clearance vibe.

    • Maybe you could say this for the GTX 1650's in gaming laptops, they belong in the trash. Everything else though is more than capable.

      • Depend on the price point, would be fine if sub $500.
I got a dell G5 gtx 1650ti for $600 2 years ago and it still can run starfield.

Just a heads up. This model seems to be exclusive to Officeworks in Australia. As only Officeworks appears on staticice for this particular model and i can only find it sold from Officeworks when looking on Google. So unfortunately you won't get a price match elsewhere because no place elsewhere has this exact model.

  • Got the G7 GD 11th gen i5 myself. It does run hot, but can't say I've noticed thermal throttling too often. Warranty has been great dealing with gigabyte (though it can take a while, bout 3-4weeks) they have been extremely thorough, had a keyboard issue with one of keys stopped working, they took it, said HDMI port was looking bit loose and fixed that too, full clean, replaced keyboard and touchpad. However I wouldn't purchase anything less than 8gb now (bought 4080 Lenovo other week, since current 4gb 3050 doesn't really cut it, much these days). Sorry for formatting, on mobile.

  • Not for gaming but I am interested to know how many displays can this laptop connect with. I understand that I can at least connect 2 displays via DP & HDMI.
I tried a different laptop with a USB c to DP splitter, the resolution on the displays dropped from QHD to FHD. I wonder if it can support 3 QHD displays as my usage requires me to look at multiple displays at the same time. Thanks.

    • Interested in this as well re the triple screens. Need a lappy for drafting software (Revit, Adv Steel, Navisworks) and processing point cloud data.

    • I have a HP g6 for work and no video card and I have 3 external 27 inch screens and some times I have the laptop screen in use.

Only thing competitive here is the price. Would have downvoted but accidently upvoted, and can't re-vote after revoking my vote. Now thats a mouthful, much like what I'm going to tell you about this laptop:

Even at 997$, this is hard to call much of a budget deal, with the lenovo LOQ 1.2k one providing much more and a more economical buy in the long run - you are getting a far better screen, better performance even with seemly similiar specs, better build quality and will last longer.

There is not going round the issue here, Gigabyte took a Clevo chassis - not even a semi good one at that - but a super duper low end Clevo sku and rebadged it as their own. Overal build quality, make, and cooling is on the low end. This can buddy up with MSI GF/Cyborg as the worst gaming laptop in 2023. Keyboard flex, screen wobble - the whole nine yards. This is the epitome of what the 'made-in-china' stereotype would look like if in a gaming laptop. By the way, even Gigabytes 'older' G5 KC/KD/KE models are better - and these are all Clevo rebrands - just to give you and idea of how bad this is.

How terrible is that cooling? Well, for a 15.6' gaming laptop, this packs in a massive 75w of 4050 goodness, even with the capped out wattage for low end 40 mobile at only ~100watts compared to 140w last gen, you still do not get full performance. This thing is bundled up with a 150w power brick, now thats what I call shoddy. Even 2021 Nitro 5 had 180w power bricks! (And no, thats not a compliment to the old nitro 5, it was cheap offering a 3060 in a time where gpu prices are heavily inflated so that gets a pass at that point in time).

And then of course, we have the screen, 144hz 1080p doesnt look too bad, untill you realise this is in 2023 and such specs is lowest of the lows, coupled with only 250nits and 60% srgb, you can play games on here, but I wouldnt imagine it a good experience in the least.

To round the features off, you have a single 8gb ram (did I mention its DDR4, while international 2023 G5 skus get DDR5?) - prompting an upgrade asap - which should factor in the cost here, a 512gb ssd and a whopping 54wh battery, with intel 12th gens high uncore wattage - you are not getting much or any battery life out of here.

Folks interested to know more about this piece of art can check out the review here which is the only semi professional and well written review on the 'new' G5. The video link in the disassembly tab is wrongly linked, but everything else checks out here.

    • Appreciate the write up mate. Just pulled the plug will wait for a Lenovo deal to pop up.

    • i see you promoting loq and lenovo gaming laptops everywhere..

      • because they are that good on a budget tier. gigabyte and msi have been trash for a long time and thats that.

if you think I am a sockpuppet for lenovo. feel free to report me to the mods. no need to neg be so sarcastic.

I am using an rog zephyrus and have been using rog machines for the last 3 years, for your information :)

        • all good bro

  • I bought a Gigebyte Arous 15P in 2021 and it's already doing weird shit like freezing and not posting. Don't recomment.

  • I have a A7 and hate the case, it looks identical to this deal, it's cheap and tacky. Also the PSU is a BIG heavy brick, reckon it weighs at least a kilogram. Wouldn't buy a Gigabyte branded gaming pc again unless they up their game.

    • this and A5 / A7 are cheap Clevo chassis, they are bad

Clevo chassis can be good, but these are not that kind

Gigabyte own models like Aorus are good, but best to look into 17 inchers, just make sure you choose a model with a CNC machined metal body, those are the best. I posted a deal couple years ago, and I know they improved on that (added mux switch etc), just not sure if they still come with real mechanical keyboard now

  • 8GB of RAM!

They should have just left it empty so it's easier to upgrade.

  • Should I upgrade to 16gb or 32gb and can anyone suggest what & where to buy ram at the moment?. Thanks in advance

  • Can anyone give thier view on how this (with 16gb ram) would compare to ThinkPad E16 Gen 1 Laptop?

My usecase would be for office/admin tasks with some light photoshop maybe a few times a year. Also maybe movies a few times a year but that would be it. Cheers :)

    • +1

It's a personal decision, but for me, I prefer gaming laptops— even if I don't really game much with them. Just light gaming here and there, low intensity games. (Gaming laptops tend to overheat). I prefer them to 'ThinkPad' style OEM 'work' or 'student' style ones because they are usually comparable in price, but you can upgrade them easier and swap out parts a bit more than the integrated ones. In my experience that increases the longevity of the laptop somewhat and gives you more bang for your buck. My old laptop had components that died on it that I was able to swap out pretty easily because it was a gaming laptop. My other laptop was OEM and once it died, that was it. It was really hard to take apart and even check what was wrong with it.

That's just my personal preference though, there's nothing wrong with Thinkpads, Ideapads, etc, and it's all luck really— sometimes you get an ace little laptop with integrated everything that lasts forever, sometimes gaming laptops are bad or vice versa. Ymmv.

As for the individual differences, the 16gb is nice upfront on the Lenovo, but one is soldered which means you can only ever swap one RAM stick, max 40gb. You're always stuck with a the 8gb stick. Which is fine, but not sure what would happen if the RAM fails on that stick. The Gigabyte you can swap both and upgrade to 64.

The displays are similar in terms of PPi but the Gigabyte is better with a 144hz refresh rate vs 60hz on the Lenovo, which means if you do plan to game at all, the Gigabyte is better. If you're only going to watch TV or movies then this doesn't matter.

Discrete graphics on the GB vs integrated on the Lenovo, although the Lenovo's graphics are decent for integrated.

Gigabyte has swappable SSD, add more storage etc. Not sure if you can add storage to the Lenovo— I think so but it's hard to find info on it. But I mean, that doesn't matter much with the price of externals.

The price is comparable, but you get a 2 year warranty with the Gigabyte vs 1 with the Thinkpad. Of course you need to add the RAM stick cost to the Gigabyte, though.

The battery is better on the Gigabyte.

If you can get the Lenovo for even cheaper (about 750 with the Shopback deal?) then I think it would be worth it to get that. Especially if you are seriously never going to game at all.

      • Wow, thanks for the detailed insights!

I've ordered the Thinkpad, got it for $730(!) but have 3 weeks till it ships (so can cancel before that)!

I am motivated with the diy repair thoughts presented, as it's what I've done even with my current laptop. Also the larger battery on this one.

Im really not a gamer… but sometimes dabble in machine learning and ai generation stuff, though for that it's easy enough to use a server! Thinking I'll stick to the Thinkpad for now! Thanks very much again

        • No worries at all! I'm glad my thoughts helped a bit; my laptop died so I've been looking at listings lately and weighing the pros and cons myself… so comparing the specs was kind of for myself, too, haha.

I actually decided on this (the Gigabyte) and ordered it, but Officeworks borked my order and sent me the wrong item in the box. Now my comp is lost to the ether apparently and they are sold out. =\ So back to square one.

I think 730 is a great price for the Lenovo! I really hope it's good. Let me know how it goes. I hear good things about Lenovo but I've never had one.

          • @ceebee: Great that it was helpful for you as well. Dang, that'd be super annoying having your order bungled like that! Hope you find something good soon.

Mine is supposedly arriving tomorrow, hopefully not the wrong order like yours 🤞

Look forward to it and I think I'm going to upgrade the RAM first thing! Found another helpful review on it, incase you're interested in considering it again 🙂

            • @thriftysu: @thriftysu Haha, yes I was SO peeved, lol. When I got the box I was like, 'well, this box is a bit too light…' and sure enough it was some random tablet thing meant for someone else, with their picking ticket inside. I almost cried, haha. Customer service was apologetic and refunded me straight away and took the other person's item back, but he basically said they have no idea where my order went and they couldn't source another because it was totally sold out AU wide. So… I guess it wasn't meant to be. But yeah, I was so annoyed!

I hope yours is great. Do you know if upgrading the RAM would void the warranty?

I did consider the Thinkpad— At 730 I feel like it's a right bargain! But the refresh rate (60hz) is too low for me since I do wanna game a bit on it, I wanted at least 144hz. So not suitable for my wants. Otherwise I would have gone with that. I went with the MSI Bravo 15 instead, which costs more (boo) but it's on sale right now. It's better than the GB in some ways and worse in others. It has more RAM at least which means I don't have to upgrade yet.

              • @ceebee: Lol to think they'd have atleast given you like a giftcard or something for your troubles and the confusion they caused.

I'm not sure about the warranty thing, I hope it isn't voided.. I was planning to do it without leaving any physical evidence, not like they'll be able to tell (if I swap it back incase I need to take it in for repairs anyway 🤷‍♂️)

Agree re:sceen thingo for gaming, shame they didnt offer an option to customise this laptop like in other countries… Hope your MSI one is good!

                • @thriftysu: @thriftysu Well, I thought I might update you on my laptop saga— the MSI one fell through too, haha. They had sold out of it. I've been having real bad luck with laptops lately. D:

I was going to get the same MSI somewhere else but I saw Officeworks had a Lenovo gaming Ideapad on clearance much cheaper, and I've gotten that instead. Officeworks actually sent it this time! Hopefully it's good, and my laptop saga is over, lol. Have you received your Thinkpad? How are you liking it?

A 10 buck gift card would have been nice! They never even got back to me with the neg feedback I left them, either. But oh well.

                  • @ceebee: Oh wow, cant believe that fell through as well! Seems like you probs got the best result with your ideapad. Hope its going well so far!

I just got my laptop and was going to set it up in the coming days, not in a rush as my old one is working fine and this was just an upgrade. God knows when I'll actually get around to it 😅

Thats really a shame re:officeworks.. but cant say Im surprised at all!

PS - haha now I feel I must update when I do finally start using the new laptop!

  • I wonder why the manufacturer doesn't just put in another 8gb of ram for $30. They could sell the laptop for like $100 more, and it'd still be way more desirable. And a lot of naive folk don't really look past ram. They just see a bigger ram number and assume more powerful laptop. Most people are familiar with RAM, than they are with CPU and GPU model numbers.

  • +1

Thanks for this. I've ordered one to replace my Dell G7 which has a motherboard issue for the integrated video. Still works but the bottom of the screen flickers. Doesn't happen in 3d games, so it's not the monitor. Such a shame to replace a great device for such a small issue.

Hoping this will be a great replacement and it will run Linux like a dream.

  • Anyone know if you can upgrade the RAM without voiding the warranty? Also does it take DDR5?

2 Years is pretty good Warranty. Was looking at this and an MSI but the MSI only had 1 year and a worse GPU.

    • Replying to this cuz I can't edit: The reason I asked about DDR5 is because I saw the specs under: https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Laptop/G5--2023/sp#sp which says the G5-MF5 has DDR5 slots but the specs for Officeworks says its DDR4. So I was a bit confused. But on preview, I think the AU version (
G5 MF-F2AU333SH) is different to the G5 MF5 Specs. Not sure where to find the official specs for the AU version.

  • OOS online & in store it seems.
