This Shiraz just won the best wine of the year not sure how credible this panel/jury is, but I'm giving it a try…

Taylors Wines, a family-owned winery from Clare Valley, has hit a home run by scoring a perfect 100-point rating for its Taylors Heritage Label Shiraz 2022 at the 20th annual VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition. This achievement also earned them the International Champion trophy.

The wine was judged alongside over 580 samples from 15 countries. Impressively, this is the second year in a row that Taylors has won this top award, with its Estate Shiraz 2020 taking the prize last year. This makes Taylors the first winery to win this title two years running.

Min order - case of 6. RRP - A$144; member price A$120 (needs email signup), better if ordering more than 6 or use Welcome30 if ordering one case to try…
Shipping to NSW was A$15 for my order..

It'll take something more to get me buying Taylor's…there must be a qualifier in this win somewhere…

One of their promotional positions is that they are the "world's most awarded winery". They enter lots of wines in lots of wine shows to achieve it which would cost a fortune! Some international wine shows charge as much as around $400 per entry. 580 entires from 15 countries is not a huge number if it is a global show - which frankly I'd never heard of….

    • Many wineries dont send wines to these competitions. You wont see many of the top wines in Australia with medals.

Palate fatigue is a real thing.

That being said, I dont mine an occasional glass of Taylors, but i don’t pay attention to the awards. And the "worlds best wine" is amazing as a gift to foreign relatives.

    Is this Taylor's version?

    1. See this reported in the news
    2. Search Dan Murphy's website, only to find they don't stock it
    3. Google 'Taylors Heritage Label Shiraz 2022 buy'
    4. Click on the third search result, which is this very OzBargain post
    5. Save an additional $6.00

Can't be too bad of a price as the Taylors' shirazes that Dan Murphy's do stock (22 in total) start at $14.99 regardless.

I spoke with my local Dan Murphy's today and she mentioned that they have not got stock of the 2022 in yet but they will be getting it in. She also mentioned that the 2020 sold out pretty quickly.

Looks like a pretty limited field of South American vineyards.

Not saying this is not a decent drop for the price.. just the media should note they're not exactly competing against Grange or Hermitage..

    • South American…?

      • He could mean South Australian.

But South America produces some amazing wines too

    • haha…wish I had seen this before buying and posting this deal…you learn & live….

Dunno. For what it's worth, Googling either 'international wine competition' or 'international wine awards', VINUS is roughly the 16th one listed (among results that also include media articles, compiled lists and social media links). Make of that what you will.

And if the media articles are accurate, and there were indeed 580 entrants from 15 different countries, then I would argue that to be a fairly wide selection.

And at $20, the price is hardly exorbitant.

But Huon Hooke has a fair pedigree and his assessment seems fair and balanced. Still, I don't regret the purchase.

I agree with Huon that it’s largely bullshit.

Still, I think it certifies that this is a good wine for $20. If you buy it with that mindset rather than ‘this is the best wine in the world’, you’re likely to be impressed.

I'd rather spend a little more and go with $185 delivered for 6 outstanding wines: https://www.coldstreamhills.com.au/en-au/coldstream-hills-am…

    • Coldstream Hills cool climate is a very different style to these warm climate full-bodied South Australians.

  • Agreed, the full bodies SA and WA wines are a genuine 14.5% full bodied wine just wish the 2004? Saltram Mambre Brooke was still around what a great wine that was beat the recent Saltram #1 imho

  • Yeah, The John Ridoch pastorialist won best Cabernet at the London Wine show … Dans didn't price jack and sold for the regular $35 I grabbed 2 bottles, it's OK but there is a lot of good wine at $35 … need to look at the specific wines in the category to see who entered. Starward in San Franciso the same, I looked at who they were up against in their categories. Ethereal grenache 2020 "awarded best grenache in the world" … great at $15 and sold in a day after the win the 2021 was as good and was on shelf for 11 mths.

I's a bit of fun to buy award winners at reasonable prices to see what the judges though was great …. I wouldn't buy cases with hope of resell, maybe a case to drink though.
