  • Probably a long shot for if you bought this last week at the higher price from DJ do they have any form of price protection etc?

    • +1

Probably not, or at least never heard of such things from DJ.

But if you paid by credit card, some cards have price protections, though there are lots of strings attached.

Failing that, you could try the buy and refund trick, a bit of a chore and doesn't always work if serial number is recorded.

    • +8

      … a long shot…

I see what you did there ;-)

    • Same here. Buy the one at 1019…and yet to receive it. Can we get the difference back or have to do the full refund and repurchase it again?

    • +1

Previously, I’ve taken the receipt and product into David Jones and they’ve given me a credit in gift cards when the product when on sale a short while after.

May have gotten lucky with staff member.

      • I have chat with the customer service and they happy to refund the difference to me. Happy day

    • Hey

Whats the difference between these 2? Which is better? Thanks

Breville BES920BSS Dual Boiler Coffee Machine $959.20 Delivered @ David Jones

      Breville The Barista Pro $799.20,

      • Dual boiler for pulling shot and steaming at the same time, temperature stability and possibly drier steam, no grinder.

        Vs

Thermoblock (I think) so may take longer to make coffees, possibly Wetter steam, includes grinder.

        • I see thanks mate!

          • @ATTS: Np. I have the dual boiler and it's great. Very big, so that plus a grinder will take up bench space.

Pro is smaller and all in one. Relatives have the express and they've made good coffees with them too.

            • @kiitos: I see Thanks

Haha i just want a deal really around 35% or higher would be sweet

I think dual boiler might be right for me

I currently have a really old breville looking to replace

    • Yes, I bought mine last week at DJ and just got the difference of $59.95 refunded via chat. :)

  • Price dripping like it’s hot

  • +2

    Worth waiting for black friday?

    • I think this is as good as it'll get. Hard to say…

Shame price protection isn't a thing anymore

      • +1

it is for some of us! Yeehaww

        • I’m just checking if my NAB card has price protection but I don’t think it does

        • Where do you get it?

  • Is this best in the coffee machine category? Can it make mocha? Sorry If sounds silly but I am not much knowledgeable about coffee machines.

    • +4

For its price points it’s great. I had mine for about 7 years before it died - prob could have got it fixed but decided to “upgrade”’to fancier profitec which was about 2.5 x the price. tbh the Breville was just as good (even better in some features perspective, and more forgiving). Definitely punches above its weight.

Re mocha, you would dissolve some choc powder with water in cup to make a bit of a choc paste in bottom of cup then put a coffee shot into that (then top with milk etc). The machine will just make espresso shots only and has a steam wand for heating/frothing milk.

Worth mentioning you would need a separate grinder. A good entry level one is the Breville Smart Grinder Pro

      • Aha. Thanks for detailed reply. It seems to be not my cup of coffee then. More suitable for coffee lovers and not occasional users like me.

        • +3

Yeah for occasional may be a bit much (beans will deteriorate if not used etc)
A Nespresso system may suit better perhaps.

          • @dlcx: Can you recommend one? Tbh I would love to have Indian expresso coffee but don't know if there is such machine available here. It has entirely different taste than the usual capicino, latte, etc

            • +1

@amsaini15: Chances are, if you're calling it expresso, you're fine with a can of instant and some UHT milk in a paper cup.

    • +2

Is this best in the coffee machine category?

Best dual boiler? - Probably not.
Best machine under $1000? - Yeees!!!

      :)

    • +4

Its far and away the best bang for buck for a semi manual machine.

      It does not

      • grind coffee, at all
      • steam milk for you
      • add water or milk for you
      • make any kind of coffee for you, automatically.

      It does

Make a fantastic shot of coffee, once you learn how to dial in a grind setting, timing of the shot, etc.

Let you steam immediately after pulling (or during, if you're cranking out a few coffees, or just on the ball).

Pull a bunch of shots in a row if you have guests no problem.

You have to spend 3x or 4x as much to get a comparable shiny metal more traditional machine or decent fully automated rig.

Cons? Its relatively ugly as (profanity) and takes up a shitload of space.

      I love mine.

      • Nice and accurate. I put mine on a timer to wake up 15 minutes before I do. When I walk up to it, it's ready to go.

      • how long does it take form off to ready to pull shot?

have the bambino plus atm and its fast, but shot quality suffers

        • Curious how shot quality suffer?

  • +3

Ah, the good old days when things were affordable.

I managed to get the EM7000 here:

A grand for a home coffee machine
      Ffs

      • +2

And you'll still need to fork out another couple of hundred for the grinder…

        • which grinder would you recommend?

          • @Mr Frodo: I really don't know. Anything from Sunbeam or Breville is unsuitable for Espresso apparently reading the comments here.

            • @jaimex2: Honestly Breville smart grinder is great for the price. You can upgrade later if you feel the need.

          • +3

            @Mr Frodo: Specialita Eureka

            • @OzBrogains: Another vote for Eureka.

              • @SickDmith: Another vote but ill say the eureka mignon oro single dose.

They took everything the fans did aftermarket to make their product better and integrated it into a factory unit.

                • @Ademos: Single does is for … advanced coffee drinkers. :)

          • @Mr Frodo: Is there usually sale for smart grinder

      • +2

I understand this sentiment but equally if you and partner (hypothetically..) WFH 80% of the week it pays for itself incredibly quickly. I know 2 coffees at the office costs me about $8-$10 a day. This equates to about $1 a cup in my case.

        • I suppose it makes sense in that case

        • +1

Way more than a dollar a cup I reckon. Unless you buy super cheap beans and milk. Plus you might not have factored in the grinder

          • +2

@serpserpserp: I think about $1 a cup is about right.
Airjo coffee is often ~$33/kg shipped.
That's 60 cents for an 18g double shot.
Let's say your milk is $2/L and you have a latte with 200ml that's another 40 cents.

          • +2

@serpserpserp: Now factor in this coffee machine turns itself on and is warmed up about the time im stumbling out the bedroom in my robe.

            Priceless.

            • @Ademos: Yep.

            • @Ademos: Well that will cost more money. But Breville duel boilers generally warm up pretty quick. Turn mine on as soon as I get up and toilet trip and start getting brekkie ready and it's ready to go.

          • @serpserpserp: I do use Aldi beans but ruin any savings by drinking bonsoy!

            • +2

              @drprox: Haha Aldi medium ftw!

Coles milk completes the ozbargain coffee….

              • @Naigrabzo: Love the Medium Aldi beans! Also because they are so popular where I live I can get them quite fresh.

                • @mintyman: Damn man, Lucky duck. I think mine a little dated. Still good at at least 3 months that it takes for me to go through 1kg. Towards the end a little bitter though.

                • @mintyman: What date stamp is considered quite fresh?

Might have look next time at aldi

              • @Naigrabzo: Damn here's me always enjoying the dark roast, I'll need to diversify!

                • @drprox: Is it true medium and light roast has more caffeine

And that dark roast has stronger taste but less caffeine?

                  • @ATTS: Dunno. I thought opposite!?

                  • -1

@ATTS: That is a myth. There's a miniscule percentage difference between dark or light roast of the same bean. If you measure your beans by weight, as different roasting style results in different density, there's not going to be much difference. If you're eyeballing it, you'll fit more dark beans in the cup and get a bigger caffeine hit.

                • @drprox: Haha Maybe medium will be not strong enough for ya…. Do try it though but it's about 2 bux more dear.

            • @drprox: Recommend you jump on the Amazon S&S deals for Bonsoy. You can consistently get 1 litre under $4 and delivered to your door (buy a week or two worth at a time).

    • Haha we got one of these entirely for free on marketplace when our DB broke recently (which thankfully turned out to be with a month of warranty remaining!). The sunbeam wasn't half bad.

    • Haha…I got that one too! Still going strong. Are you tempted to upgrade to this one?

  • Not sure should i get this or wait for delonghi 40% off in November

    • Has the 40pc off been confirmed yet?

      • Not yet

I asked someone here before they said last year that had in nov so probably again in nov this year

Are you looking at getting a coffee machine aswell?

        • Yep. I missed the Eleta Explorer deal back in Jun so been keeping an eye on Delonghi. What do you plan to get?

          • @theUnderdog: Hey im looking for a manual machine

            Maybe something like this

            But thinking like this one

            La Specialista Maestro, Metal
            1500 full price

Or the dual boiler listed on op

I so regret not getting the delonghi last year

    • Which Delonghi compares to this one Atts? Thanks in advance!

      • Hey

I dont really know much. But thinking like this one

        La Specialista Maestro, Metal
        1500 full price

  • +2

There is no other competition to this machine at this price point

  • This coffee machine has kept its price surprisingly well. I remember buying it at this price around 10 years ago and it came with the smart grinder as a bonus.

It still works extremely well after all those years

  • There are refurbish Oracles going around the traps for $1299. Might be worth it for some who want semi auto/take up less bench space than this plus grinder

    • +2

Only problem I find with the machines that have a grinder built in is if the grinder messes up you have to take in the whole machine, whereas a separate grinder messing up is an easier fix.

      • Never had that problem so far. Just keep the grinder well maintained. It isn't the most perfect grinder, but the Oracle one is the best inbuilt grinder I have used.

        • Just curious how much discount you bought the breville oracle for?

          • @ATTS: It was many years ago so don't remember the price. I got it with gift cards via free frequent flyer points. I posted in here I think that you can get refurbs at the moment for $1300.

            • @serpserpserp: I see thanks

              Im looking for brand new

              • @ATTS: JB HiFi selling at $1899 at the moment you might be able to get the price lower.

  • Does anywhere sell the black version of this? Have seen it in reviews (Lance Hendrick) but haven't been able to find one.

    • Not sure if it's still the case, but from memory the black one was only available in the more expensive set (the dual boiler + grinder combo kit), at least in Aus

    • +1

While they look great at start I would think twice before looking a colored Breville machines, the paint scratches of so easily.

  • +2

For anyone curious, the machine I got this week from this sale has a build week of 2327

    • what does that mean

      • +8

As of mid 2022, Breville have completely changed both the coffee and steam boilers and all of their sensors and tubes to be compression fittings (photo attached of a BES980).
What this means is that there is no longer any o-rings on either of the boilers to leak. This is going to dramatically increase their reliability. The earliest machine I currently know of to have the new boilers is date code 2228 (28th week of 2022) and Breville said they change was fully implemented as of late 2022. (To find your date code, read the serial number and the first four numbers you come across after the "A1BAAESA" or similar string is the year/week).

        https://coffeesnobs.com.au/forum/equipment/brewing-equipment…

So if DJ are sending out 23 machines, you're likely going to get a new one. Some stores had really old stock and people were still getting the old o ring version

        • woah thanks for the explanation mate!

        • Since implemented late 2022

Would this offer ( david jones) be new stock with no o rings

Or is it luck of the draw if you get old or new model? At david jones?

        • Also is this offer instore aswell?

If instore is it possible to check the

          Serial number ln the box

and also can we use gift card to pay for it?

        • Also is this below something to worry?

And would delonghi branded manual machine have these issues aswell?

The centre of the steam probes does still seem to be an o-ring though, these have been failing a lot recently. I'm not sure if this is a new design as well or if it's the same, I would assume this has been changed to improve reliability if they've gone to such effort for the rest.

        • Awesome explanation.
I was able to get a JB Hifi close to me price match this but no idea what their stock levels were like recently so I’m not sure if they’re carrying new or older ones

        • thanks for posting

    • Instore or online?

  • What are the advantage and disadvantage of builnt in grinder in a coffee machine vs external / seperated smart grinder?

I can only think of space?

    • +1

      Advantage: space
Massive disadvantage: if the grinder dies, the whole unit is dead.

      • I see

        thanks

    • +1

The built in grinders aren't that great for nice fluffy consistent espresso grind. Also another potential failure point on machine.
