this reads like more of an ad / their press release than an actual "bargain" imo

  • +17

Ehh I'd rather break the trip up and get drunk in an exotic location along the way. For anyone not in Perth, Perth is the "weird other location" you have to stop over in, and TBH Singapore or Taipei seems a lot nicer than there.

      • +2

More of a Hawaii type person but thanks all the same.

    • +2

Can go sub 3K in biz with Etihad from SE Asia to Western Europe

      • o.o care to share locations?

        • Just checked. Locations do vary but right now Manila to Dublin, Lisbon, Madrid or Barcelona can all be had for ~$2800 return in Etihad business class

          • @gudplr: thanks mate!

Issue i've run into is Bus flights from Mel to Asia is roughly 3-4$k.

Not sure if there's much saving

            • @Jackjcca: Yeah starting biz in Aus is bonkers price-wise. Best to just fly economy to Asia and then start business from there. Get 2/3 of the time in biz for 1/3 of the cost.

The other option is fly economy to Asia then get yourself to KUL on the way back. Can then fly KUL-MEL in Philippine Airlines business class for just under $1k one way.

              • @gudplr: yeah same with bali. I've done Philippine airlines short haul international before and I hated the seat. There's no leg support and i'm not tall enough to touch the floor and freaking hated it.

                • @Jackjcca: Yeah long haul PR is lie flat though

                  • @gudplr: That was okay compared to other lie flats out there, was a bit outdated but for that price it was a steal

    • +2

Am from Perth… yup we’re definitely the weird stop over location.

      • +1

And the more expensive location than almost everywhere in Asia…

  • +1

    Neh

  • +6

Cheap flights to bring home bed bugs
    🐜

    No thanks

  • What are the connections like from Melbourne? Would not want to stuck in a weird location for hours.

    • Easy to check for your preferred dates @ qantas.com

  • +21

Not a deal and will not be flying with Qantas for the foreseeable future out of principle as this company is unethical and have significantly contributed to the reason why taking a flight in Australia is so expensive.

    • +4

Yup I thought I was the only one who was bothered enough by their recent ethics issues to stop flying with them.

    • Yeah, Vietnam airlines had flights in the low 1000’s both last year and this year too, departing from Melbourne and Sydney which are even longer distance

  • +6

If this is the level of service and quality of food in business class these days then there’s not a hope I’d pay $1958 in cattle class to fly on what is ostensibly Jetstar with a different logo.

    • Depends how picky you are. Biz class in Qantas is far from the worst I've experienced even if it isn't the best.

Problem is for most people, airfares in Australia are a ripoff.

No way I'd pay for any of these flights in cash, I'd use Classic Rewards with points only.

Sadly seems to be no rewards seats on this route just yet

  • +4

    or any weird other location

ah but you have to fly through Perth!

    • +2

Perth is a lot better than what it was 15 years ago. Least we don't have the rubbish traffic and toll roads the eastern states have to put up with.

      • +3

Pretty sure there's no traffic or toll roads in any airport.

        • -3

Wasn't talking about airport. Was talking about work commutes.

        • Sydney airport traffic is a thing

      • +1

How relevant it is for some one who transit through Perth airport?

  • +6

I don't care where the plane stops but a 17 hour flight sounds like an actual nightmare if you're trapped in economy class! I'd rather lose half a day of my holidays due to another stop over.
    Anyone else?

    • +1

Depends on your tolerance levels. I used to be able to do it when younger but now I do long haul in business only.

Shorter flights in connecting countries I do economy cos can hack it

    • Even in business class it sounds rough. Good if you're on a tight schedule I suppose, but even flying business class I would rather break it up with a 2-3 hour stopover to stretch my legs and enjoy the lounge before continuing.

      • +1

It sounds rough to lie in bed for 17 hours while people bring you food and drink?

        • Yes lol it’s actually is rough

        • Depends.
Hospitals and prisons basically do that, and I am not rushing to them.

        • It's still 17 hours in one spot and it's not much of a bed. If it was first class then I think it would be fine but I've not flown first class yet.

          • @CheapBrah: Depends

I did 14/15 from Sydney to Joburg in business and it was ok over there and a bit tough on the way back.

Dreamliner doesn't have first so would have preferred that but it could have been much much worse so I can't complain

          • +1

@CheapBrah: No it's not… You can sit in the chair, you can lie down in the bed, you can get up and walk around.

I have never flown Qantas longhaul business, but I've spent 15 hours in a not particularly well received BA business class seat and found it great.

    • I've had to do this in Economy before, last minute call and got the last seat in Y (No W or J avail). Upgrade request into W/J failed (P1 request)

It wasnt all too bad, jetlag did not hit me and if you sleep the way it ends up pretty good

      • Enough whiskey & diazepam will get you through any flight but after 12hr I just want out of the tin can, regardless of what cabin you're stuck in.

  • did they release any reward seats yet?

    • +1

No and they wont for any general availability, you can request them though if you are WP+. Too much of a high yield destination.

  • Very expensive new route unless you in a hurry.

  • not a deal at all, just the direct featire

  • Paris Olympics flights…

    .

  • +1

Was able to get 4 Business Return CR fares between MEL-PER-CDG over school holidays. Should be fun.

    • Points?

      • +2

Yep classic reward seats, just under 1.2m return for the 4 of us.

  • No Boeing for me

    • Be a bit nicer on a 787-10 but sone of QF's 9s are getting a bit long in the tooth, you'd hope you got one of the 2023 deliveries.

  • Damn one month AFTER my planned trip :(

  • +2

They use new aircraft for new routes but have decided to keep flying the old-shaking A330-200 for the flight between Brisbane and Los Angeles.

    • Agreed, what a piss take. Better to fly ANZ & enjoy their B773s. Much comfier.

      • +1

I refuse to fly with Qantas until they reinstate the pre-COVID plan, in which they will deploy 4x B787s for flights from Brisbane to Los Angeles , San Francisco, and Chicago.

  • Qantas to Paris .. who'd have thunk it .. 1980s revisited??

    • certainly wasn't direct back then :P
