@Misha Bakunin: While your question is obviously valid given its best to give this information in the description, it's slightly concerning how many people are no longer willing to find out basic information themselves. Is this why so many people just believe anything they're told nowadays?

            • @callum9999: I guess I am suspicious that is true, some dodgey stuff going on more than in the "olden days". Also lazy, I'm prepared to admit, and if someone can quickly tell me that is easy.

            • @callum9999: What I find equally as concerning is people's immediate shaming and sarcasm to people who ask genuine questions which may have an element as to why some are likely to believe "anything" if they receive it worded kindly from another person who doesn't feel the need to put them down in the process.

              • @Faro: I found that hard to read, but is it accurate to say that you think people being mean on the internet results in people blindly believing anything they're told by a nice person?

                I don't think that's remotely true.

                • @callum9999: No, my gut instinct is people ask questions on the internet to hear a human response. It's an attempt at a form of connection. When people take the time just to provide unhelpful, disconnected responses like "just Google it" in response to genuine questions, this drives isolation. When someone responds kindly to a question online, the interaction is remembered as helpful and emotional responses (which are linked to memory) kick in.

If a kind and apparently 'helpful' conspiracy theorist answers someone's genuine question about something not understood by the asker (let's say COVID as an example), this is noted, remembered and mulled over as the person asking goes from confused or wanting to comforted and affirmed.

                  • @Faro: You began that by saying "no", but I don't see how it's any different to what I said?

Lonely people wanting a connection online should probably try using forums that discuss interests instead of asking random questions. I suspect the actual people doing this aren't doing it because they're "lonely", but because they're lazy - as confirmed by the person themself. (Which isn't a criticism of them as a person - I've spent half the day lazing around the house, so I'm not going to judge!)

I went and flipped opened my trusty Britannica, didn't find anything for SnackBack

          • @0806449: I consulted my HGTTG and nothing there, either, which surprised me.
