This multimeter was very popular last time it was posted and now it's back on sale for an even lower price than last time. While I wouldn't expect this to as accurate as expensive multimeters, it's still good for enough for basics like DC hobby projects.

If you hate red you can get the yellow one for an extra 2 cents!

AU$ based on current Mastercard rate and GST inclusive.

    Requires 9V batteries, sadly.

    • Every multimeter I've ever had, required 9v Batteries. Pretty normal.
Edit: This one seems to have a beeper for continuity. Which is a feature most cheap ones don't have. So that's a bonus.

Also part of the 3 items for $x promo for US$3.99 + GST

    Use case?

  • Is there an automatic one that's good quality? I know it seems easy to dyi but it seems a bit finicky to me

    • +1

Yeah the M118A is a good automatic one, it's about $10 too on aliexpress.

  • Looks worthwhile… have a cuppla old dodgey ones that noah sold me. Bought 2.

These are amazing multimeter if you only work with DC and do hobbyist work.

Aneng have really nailed it when it comes to the demographic of users who aren't electrical engineers or doing commercial/AC work.

They're amazingly accurate and precise even if it was 10 times it's cost. I do wish they had better fuses and protection systems but it's not much of an issue with dc/hobbyist work.

The one downside is that the display isn't back lit (or if it is it isn't permanently) and so readability could be bett r. If you have a few extra bucks they have some models with black background on white lit text that are really good too.

    • Why DC? No proper RMS?

      • +3

Performance on AC isn't nearly as good, some safety features could be beefed up/better, the probes ac rating are questionable.

For $10, it's nothing unexpected. Corners have to be cut somewhere.

        • I agree. I was considering a Uni-T model as a beater-meter but am considering getting one of these now.

As odd it as may sound, the biggest thing for me is decent buzzer and backlight. Oddly enough, never had to use a meter for AC.

          Biggest gripes on the budget meters;
          Poorly backlit display
Backlight which only lasts 5~10 seconds then reverts to off
          Buzzer that is low volume
          Buzzer which is delayed
Continuity buzzer option was is not the default option, ie, having to cycle through a mode option just to get the buzzer to work.

          • @Kranbone: Maybe the Uni T 123 would be a good pick.

They're about $25-30 and they might fit your criteria, it has a backlit display that's always on, the buzzer I think was decent (can't remember)

While Aneng do have some cost effective meters, I don't think this low end meter is worth it. It is easier to use an auto range one. This one is just like all those el cheapo low end ones, where you need to switch to the right range.

  • The new pen style multimeter is the way to go.

  • Doesn't measure capacitance?

    • it doesn't

Link is dead and there are cheaper listings for the exact same item when I search "DM850"

    • +1

Link works perfectly fine - turn your VPN off.

Are the DM850 you found really cheaper? Or are you seeing a new user discount where this deal is US$0.49 ex GST?

      • That's weird. I'm not using a VPN or doing anything else unusual.

I missed that the price in the title is GST inclusive so it is in fact cheaper than the other ads I saw (which were roughly $7.50 pre-tax, minimum 2 for free shipping). Sorry for that.

  • +1

Why is Aliexpress charging 13.1% GST? I've got US$4.49 in my cart with $0.59 tax when it says it's collecting 10% GST.

    • +2

GST is calculated with the non-discounted price, it's a known issue that probably won't be fixed.

  • Has it expired? It says Page not found for me

    • Are you using a VPN by chance?

      • Nope, says vocus retail sydney on whatsmyip

      • Figured it out. Had to change aliexpress country ship to setting to Australia/USD. It was set to USA for some reason

        • That would do it. A lot of these deals are region specific.

  • 1999 Counts. what does counts mean here? Can only use 1999 times?

    • The display, in terms of the digits can only display 1999 different digits. The decimal place could change and there is also the negative sign. You can kind of tell from the display.

Also, as with all low end meters, the accuracy is often not the quoted 2.5% for the entire range.

  • I would suggest using a disposable card for payment (like Revolut)

    • Why?

      • I’m not sure what exactly happened, but last time I shopped on Aliexpress, my card got hit with a couple of unauthorised transactions. I had to cancel the card and order a replacement. So, I suspected there might be a connection, but again I can’t say for sure.

        • +2

          You're better off using PayPal.

          • @Clear: Wow I’m now intrigued!!
I was using PayPal but it didn’t cross my mind!

            Why PayPal?
I thought it’s safer that way!

            • +2

@earlybirds: PayPal aren't going to disclose your credit card information.

  • Hopefully the continuity beep on this is decent. My old no-namer I got from aliexpress back in the day has served its purpose well, but the delayed and super quiet beep has always been a bother for me when using it.

  • Delivery? Could be months away, in no time you would be in 2024.

    • AliExpress Choice so a week if you're lucky or 2 weeks if you're not so lucky.
