  • I'm running 3 x Deco M5s - but speeds not great…I do need to do a wired backhaul, will probably go Cat 6, would these X68 be a good option if using wired backhaul, or am I paying for features that I won't be needing?

    • +2

      Big upgrade. Tri-band, Wi-Fi 6 and WPA3

    • +2

      speeds not great

Are the devices on the 2.4ghz band? I find with any router I have (Asus, Deco M5 and X50) that to guarantee speeds, I split out my Wifi SSIDs and isolate 5ghz and 2.4ghz i.e. one SSID has 5ghz only, and another is 2.4ghz. When both are available on the same SSID, devices can flip flop between 5 & 2.4 and whenever it's on 2.4 performance is crud.

EDIT: For context, I had 3x M5s for a couple of years before upgrading to X50s earlier this year. Had no complaints with the M5 for 30+ devices on 100/40 nbn.

    • I have M5s with a wired backhaul and no complaints (except needing the app to manage, as the Web portal is limited). Try that first if possible.

    • +1

This is often the problem with mesh systems that do not have dedicated backhaul channels. Those that do are usually much faster. Of course, you need to make sure your positioning them adequately, not using congested channels, devices that can use 5Ghz make sure actually are etc.

  • Are we able to split this into 2 SSIDs, 1 for 2.4ghz and 1 for 5ghz?

    • You can have a separate 2.4ghz SSID for IoT devices

      • Like jigna27’s comment above, I would prefer a dedicated 5ghz for my steaming devices rather than them flip flopping. It’s so hard to find information about this out there and apparently X20s do support this.

        • +1

          Yes you can do this

        • It’s so hard to find information about this out there and apparently X20s do support this.

The way I did it with the M5 was main SSID with only 5ghz and enabled guest SSID for 2.4ghz.

On the X50 and I'd assume it's the same software as the X68 I have:
          - the main SSID again with only 5ghz enabled >> this is where I connect user devices e.g. phones, tablets, laptops etc.
          - IoT SSID has BOTH 5 & 2.4 enabled >> I have my IoT devices on this. Most only support 2.4.
          - Guest SSID has BOTH 5 and 2.4 enabled >> I use this for adding visitors devices to as it auto-disables the SSID when no devices are connected. Also note that this is on a completely separate VLAN, so devices here won't talk to devices on your main SSID.

One callout is that IoT SSID has access to all your devices on the main SSID, which is counter productive. A way around that is going into each IoT in and put them into isolation mode. That means they have access to the internet, but can't talk to each other or access my home devices.

I have a 1000/50 fibre plan, X50 units are wired backhaul and I have an extra M5 on wireless backhaul i.e. 4 units all up in the house.

        • +2

nVidia shields (and i presume all android tv?) you can select 5Ghz only in network settings. Simple. Done.

          • +1

            @Xizor:

and i presume all android tv?

I have a TCL and Sony Android TVs and nope, can't limit the band. Also have had Android media players xioami and google and they don't allow limiting either. Expanding that, I don't think I've seen a device that I've owned that can limit the band locally.

            • @jigna27: Ah right wow. I think its on my old vodafone tv though, so, surprising. I have 3 nVidia shields and set it on those, its extremely useful. I stream wirelessly to all my media boxes foreign IPTV and from my NAS all works fantastic for several years now.

            • @jigna27: Windows can.

Only way to limit on many devices is separate SSIDs on the bands.

    • +3

In a roundabout way, yes. As OP mentions you need to setup an IOT Device network (or a guest network) and have that as a dedicated 2.4ghz or 5ghz network. For your main SSID you can select between 2.4ghz only, 5ghz only, or combined 2.4ghz and 5ghz.

I'm not able to see in the app a way to split it like some other mesh systems would have where you split the main SSID into two separate 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands

EDIT: just noticed in the app you can select per device which band and node it will connect to, so whilst you gave a combined SSID, you can tell it which frequency to use

      • +1

That's excellent, thanks for your help. Username checks out. :)

  • I've been wanting to upgrade my M5's for a while now. Thanks OP, thanks kwokask, and thanks doweyy.

  • Is this better than this?
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/google-nest-wifi-home-mes…
I currently have this one but with 1 wifi extender.

I'm considering buying 1 more wifi extender, but if this deal is a much bigger upgrade then I'll buy this instead.

    • This will be significantly faster, but how fast is your Internet connection? And what sort of things are you using it for?

      • Hijacking this thread, sorry. Do you reckon this would work well on a FTTN 100/40 plan? Actual speeds are around 40/10 though.

        • Overkill, but it will work well

    • You may wanna check out the google nest pro version just recently released, come with wifi 6E

  • should i buy this from my netgear mesh RBK23?

  • +4

I have 3x of Deco X68. Its wifi has been stable and great. The main unit has 2 ethernet ports so you would need a switch if you plan to run something complex. I had to get a Netgear managed switch to run my Synology Diskstation. I am on 250/20 for NBN. It works great for Plex via intranet so far. I haven't gone to hardcore with 4k streaming with my Synology yet since I'm only watching on my phone and monitor.

It is app-managed but you can actually go into its domain and manage it yourself i.e. 192.168.1.1.

  • +2

Love the new feature where you can now assign which mesh unit and which wireless band a particular device connects to.

  • eBay sold out as I pressed buy it now…

    • ? I just bought one and can buy again

      • You're right, they must have added more…

  • Can you use a mixture of these and m9s in your house

    • Yes, click the + in the top right of the app and then Add Deco Unit and you'll see a massive list of all the compatible Deco mesh units.

      • Many thanks!!!!

    • thanks, got the 3 pack. Paid with some discounted gift cards I had so final cost is more like $348 which is quite decent for a triband device ($116 for each unit)

  • For someone new to the mesh game is this a good starter pack? I’m just running a Fritzbox router on 25/10 FTTN. Wifi is patchy certain spots in the house, this will solve that yeah?

    • +3

Yes, assuming you don't live in a mansion

  • +2

    Thanks OP.
Got it from eBay with code for $268.92

    • +1

      And I paid $419 a year ago 😭

      • +2

you got a full year of usage its okay

      • Return as faulty?

    • This

  • Not enough network ports boo

    • 5 port gigabit switch is 25 odd bucks, still cheap together.

      • MY internet is only 250mbit so I think wifi 5 is fine , would rather jump to wifi 7 or even wifi 6e.

        • Haven't met anyone willing to pay the $3k for the Deco WiFi 7 3pk yet but I'll sure be jealous when I do.

          • @TheKLocker: Should drop in price rapidly over the next 12-24 months.

          • @TheKLocker: Looks like its already dropped to $1.5k on amazon for a 3 pack.

worth to buy or wait until black friday ?

They look like my Airscape coffee containers.

  • +1

have this and constant issues, having to restart the access points twice a week.

  • I had to reset my x68 3 pack cos my Mi Air 3H wouldn't connect to the network. Anyway, after that, I can no longer watch 7plus for some weird reason on ANY device on the network, unless the show specifically has no ads :/

    • never had issues wit my 3h. maybe assign it to connect to just 2.4 on the app?

      • I did. It was working fine before but then after I factory reset the 3H (to reset the filter % back to 100) it kept timing out when trying to retrieve the wifi settings from the phone no matter what wifi settings I used. Only solution was to reset the x68.

But yeah seemed to have introduced that 7plus problem. Unless my ISP (Tangerine) coincidentally blocked it? Highly unlikely though.

        • Weird.

My 7plus works just tested now. Try clearing your dns field if you put in custom ones, and test. Otherwise if you dont have any, try google or cloudfare dns and test.

          • @ozchobie: I did try setting the DNS to google on the x68 too. Still the same :/ I suppose I could try cloudflare but doubt it'll make a difference tbh.

I should clarify: live tv on 7plus works. But watching something on demand like The Voice doesn't.

  • Not good with technology.
If i use this router at home, do I also need a modem for NBN?

    • FTTN FTTB yes
FTTP FTTC HFC Fixed Wireless no

      • Thanks mate. Looks like the new place we are moving into is listed as a HFC connection.
Am I right in understanding that I can connect something like the router in this deal straight to the NBN box and this will give me WIFI around the home?

  • get this mesh or AEX75 router? i don't really need mesh, i am fine with my current one router. cost might be same to me.

  • Would these be suitable for a biggish two story house? My comparison of 'biggish' is a three bedroom upstairs with rumpus room downstairs (where the modem lives). Or would a three pack be more suitable to get a better spread?

I live in a townhouse so anything with a backyard is biggish to me 😆

  • Would they work with Deco X20-4G?
I really would love to have the 4G backup.
I can backhaul thé 3 units but obviously the 4G would be the one connecting to NBN.

    What do you guys reckon?
Any other good options out there?

  • Is something like this overkill for a 4 bedroom one-storey home on NBN 100/20 with HFC? If so what are some better alternatives?

    • Depends how many devices you have and the longest distance / walls / throughput you require but short answer is probably overkill.
For example, I've got a 5 bed house with media room / study and rumpus. The rumpus being upstairs and more or less central to the house I'm getting by fine with just an old Optus Sagemcom router (after the death of my ASUS RT-AC5300's wireless channels)

That is managing some 40 wireless devices, although I do have a separate "travel router" that I'm using as another channel for IOT, and a gigabit switched backbone for ~20 more devices.

The point I guess is do you have a particular room with a need for ultrafast connection to another device, one that springs to mind is uing a PC to stream VR to a meta headset.. that is usually needing AC connection and line of sight to the router… then it's worth having two I guess…

I doubt you need it. I'm kind of tempted for the reason just given but then again I have some old AC routers that can do the job if needed (on lan) - that I would not trust to be my first line of defense.

      • Thanks mate.

We're just 2 people living in here with the phone, laptop, chomecast and a couple of WIFI cameras connected. Also on an old Optus Sagecom router and probably suffices.

Will give this deal a skip as probably extremely overkill.

        • +2

The sagemcom is suprisingly stable and fast (I'm on nbn 1000 and pull over 850mbps through it on wired devices).
I do have some wifi lightbulbs that are starting to have connection issues… but generall it's fairly solid.

I just wouldn't trust its security.

Little tip, scan yourself once in a while on GRC.com "shields up" and see what you're exposing to the internet.

  • Keen on everyone's thoughts,

Going to move to FTTP, currently using a Telstra modem (DJA0231) with a (wired) Airport Extreme as an secondary AP (Same SSID).

Keen to use Wired backhaul. Is this a big upgrade? Can these penetrate brick a bit better than my current setup?

  • FYI for tightarses I got the cheap E4 Deco from Amazon a while back - pretty good and amazing value

    • +1

      Only dual-band and wifi 5 👎

      • Yep fair enough, but a cheap option that is good enough for those who need it.

        • You can get tri-band systems for the same price as the E4s though

          • @prhino: Not mesh ones, and not ones as easy to work

  • +2

So mine finally arrived… And one is so good its covering the whole house with wifi. Wondering whether i even need the 2nd…

    • If you're interested I can buy one from you

  • Anyone got any thoughts on deco x68 vs the Asus xd6s mesh 2 pack?
Both about the same price atm.

  • Anyone got the free camera via redemption yet?
