This Australian lady just visited Beijing and shanghai. Lovely and real video for whats tourism like in China at the moment. Have a look and definitely be more prepared before you plan to go.

    https://www.youtube.com/@josieliftsthings

    • You can watch Chinese people live streaming every day from different places basically any places that you can think of if you have the Chinese version of Tiktok or Kuaishou app or their desktop app or even on their websites.

  • It's worth a stopover in Hainan too if you have time. Hainan is a really unique part of China, it's more like Hawaii/Vietnam/Thailand in terms of landscape and climate, Sanya in particular with all the brand name hotels and resorts on the beachfront is a surprisingly lux, realtively cheap beach getaway!

Tempting, i’ve never seen large scale ethnic cleansing on a tourist trip before.

    • +1

They must be doing a horrible job with the amount of halal restaurants I ate at. Funny that.

      • Thank you for clearing things up, the reports must be works of fiction.

        • Were the reports of WMD works of fiction too?
How about the genocide in Australia - perhaps that was a work of fiction.
Not too sure, perhaps you can enlighten me

          • @TightAl: Are you trying to justify the CCP?

            • @Yosan: How they alleviated millions out of poverty and famine?
Are you defending the 20 year long actual genocides that occured in the Middle East?

          • +2

            @TightAl: Google whataboutism. You're a classic case.

            • @mr fox: You're sure yappy about one and silent about the other.
              Outrage must be selective
Also you must believe in fairy tales and the toothfairy lmao. You have zero sense of what the truth is.

              • @TightAl: This is a deal about China so we're talking about China. See how those dots connnect? Take as much time as you need.

                • @mr fox: The last part was directly about you and China, maybe you'll connect the dots. I don't think you will though

      • +1

Yes because the yanks have never sided with ,sponsored ,participated in and supported ethnic cleansing anywhere.

Oh , is that Israel over there?

        • +1

We are talking about CCP, not USA

        • Nah, you are looking at Tibet

          • @Yosan: haha, the look over there defence. Good work
Tibet is a fkn tragedy. It's a land grab. Israel is a generational pox.

If you had 2 working eyes you'd see HERE (Straya) = Tibet on steroids

            • @Protractor: Or the second East Turkestan Republic

            • @Protractor: Only Biden is second to Dalai Lama's creepy antics which is a small look into what Tibet use to be.
Bunch of kid slaves being preyed on by these 'spiritual beings' - if the Lama is happy to tongue kiss a kid on TV, one only has to wonder what happens when there's no cameras in front of him.
Black american's cried of hundreds of years of Slavery, Tibet had multiples of this.

If changing the departure city to Adelaide then the price doubles! lol

  • Brisbane! Why is Brisbane excluded?

    • China's trying to keep the quality inwards at a higher level?

    so many political comments here.

these tickets are not meant to attract you guys who only have some wild imagination about China, but for the millions of new Chinese immigrants here. the schools in Sydney are full of 2nd gen Chinese kids. Universities are full of Chinese students who most likely will become Australian citizen someday. I find most of the Australian tend to ignore the fact or haven't realized the number of the immigrants living in Australia, because the social circles rarely intertwined. Next time pay attention to the drivers in the vehicles, or the passengers on the train. you will find Sydney (possibly Melborne too) have been gradually replaced by Chinese and Indian.

Gotta love your country, then leave it to study invade, terrorise, and live in another…and deny history.

        Sounds vaguely familiar

      • +1

Many expat Australians does just that, and still love Straya…

        • If China does it, it's because they hate China
If Australia/Any other western country, they still love their countries

LoL takes some mental gymnasts to get to this point.

      • ironically its cause they dont love the country and want to GTFO there

        but nice gaslighting nonetheless

    • Then the migration policy and humans breeding habits are wrong.

  • You will be treated as a spy… and you don't know what you eat. Fate eggs, fake rice and one more added… peed Xingtao bear.

    • ah yes an entire nation eating fake eggs and rice and gutter oil
no health issues and havent starved to death yet

      logic checks out

  • How do you pay for stuff over there?
And are you free to just catch bullet trains around everywhere?

I'm interested in Nanjing, Beijing and Shanghai, are solo travelers safe?

    • just stick to major capital cities (imo nothing you cant really see in countryside aside from landmarks that you wont get in major cities. There are certain major cities known for their historical architecture, so you get modernisation with cultural aspects in 1 package without having the venture too far)

shanghai will give you majority of the experience you want. i personally see no value in beijing aside from just checking it out (like you would canberra) or if you really want to visit the terracotta warriors and forbidden city.

use air travel if you can.

the bullet trains are easy, but use an online guide on how to book. Make sure to avoid the ultra budget trains and airlines.

your life will be easier if you downloaded alipay and wechat for payment as china has gone mostly cashless

link your credit card to alipay and use alipay to pay for everything (literally scan a QR code while online shopping/at convenience stores/mom pop shops/buying tickets)
      for everything else use wechat.
Alipay has an international english friendly version after u install it

if you are there for longer than a week, it might be worth buying a domestic sim with calling cause some services like Didi (uber over there) need a mobile number attached

It will also be useful for things like food delivery to your airbnb, The food and other services are so densely packed that for any major suburb in a capital city, you will find a plethora of delivery options for things like food at insane prices and practicaly shipping sub $1aud

if you are paranoid about stuff like fake food or gutter oil. stay away from dodgy street vendors. There are plenty of name brand domestic and international chain restaurants and always buy bottled water.

solo travellers such as businessmen have been visiting china for decades without an issue…i have no idea where this fear suddenly arose that you wont be safe

the CCCP does no give a damn about random ozbargainer australians who are just there for a friendly visit

Just be respectful like every country youd visit and give no reason to attract attention to yourself. This is not unique to china

be more afraid of the beggars and pickpockets and gypsies who try to sell you stuff aggressively than the CCCP

oh and if you see a psycho Fa Lung Gong practictioner start screaming and waving banners in beijing, start walking away and dont take photos. Thats only "authoritarian" thing you will experience. Youd be surprised when a random chinese guy pops out of nowhere as undercover police

      • use air travel if you can.

IMO post-COVID, avoid air travel if at all possible, so much delays and cancellations due to airlines ramping up again with new staff. Whereas trains are always ontime and predictable, and fast! For any distance within a 4 - 5 hours train journey, you'll likely arrive quicker and cheaper than on an airplane.

be more afraid of the beggars and pickpockets and gypsies who try to sell you stuff aggressively than the CCCP

China is very safe, since moving to mostly cashless payments, pickpockets are not a thing anymore. No gypsies in China, and you should try to snap a photo of beggars, they are as rare as pandas.

I think you said the above in jest, have not seen any "anthoritarian" things at all on my multiple trips there, cities or countryside. Their undercover police does a fine job of hidding!

yes you are right about the covid impacts. its hit and miss. but in terms of speed and availability and where you want to go, plane may be more convenient.
its been a while since ive flown domestically there so i assume the covid stuff has made things very different since

yeah, i just meant in hyper touristy areas, you will still get that lady trying to hyper aggresively sell you roses for half a mile

I think you said the above in jest, have not seen any "anthoritarian" things at all on my multiple trips there, cities or countryside. Their undercover police does a fine job of hidding!

semi jest. clamping down on free speech is certainly authoritarian, fa lung gong or not.

its been over a decade since ive been to beijing, back then it was practically a laughable daily occurence of fa long gong members shouting random stuff in tiamen square then getting stomped by police and shoved into a van immediately. completely harmless but the govt didnt want that public image in such a tourist hotspot

no idea if its still a thing. but my point was compared to the other sinophobic vitrol being posted to this deal comments, thats as "bad" as things will get in terms of china experience.
The other comments are acting like u will be detained for being australian the moment u step foot in china, and they will seize your phone and feed u gutter oil. idiots

because xi jing ping cares so much about bondi bob's internet surfing habits for national security

          • @furythree: Some how OzBargainers think China is some different planet where they are plotting to kidnap and torture you for your facebook usage.

Meanwhile hundreds of Multinationals are flying thousands of people into China every single day for business of all sorts without any dramas.

            • @TightAl: haha i know right

ive been on ozbargain for over a decade, post covid, the sinophobia has started to get insane. some OG names i see spouting some crazy illogical nonsense too

  • Why can’t they do some specials from china to Australia🤔🤔

    • +2

different market. If you're in Australia they want your tourism. If you're in China and can get to Australia, that means you're doing pretty decently well - no need to offer discounts to that group. Australia is still a top destination for Chinese.

  • not bad at all I believe

am i missing something, when i click the link the lowest i see from syd to shanghai is $700

  • How do you guys use beatthatflight? I click on the link and any destination i put in, the flights only show from Melbourne to taipei?

    • Any chance you use the Honey browser extension? If so, try disabling it.
