  • That's not hpr5

      Thanks. Edited.

    • Is there a difference though?

      • hpr5 is 5w40

        • Fair. But this just means the lower temperate range goes from -35c to -30c. Even in tassie its not really going to make a difference is it?

          • @Stivo: Im not sure if its the same but with castrol edge the 5-40 is supposed to be a better quality oil than the 5-30, 10-40.

      • According to below link, they are both based on the same type of synthetic based oil and their recommendation is tot buy based on price, availability and convenience :)

The additive packages will be different and most likely favouring the HPR5. The HPR has more manufacturer approvals for what it's worth.

However one benefit of the 10w40 assuming that the base oils are of similar type (primarily group 3 most likely) would be better shear stability and lower volatility i.e stays in grade, and doesn't burn off as easily.

@Skips: Also HPR5 used to be officially 229.5 approved. The others were never approved.

            • @stumo: Good point.

Me personally I'd be more inclined to HPR5 for most cars, however the 10w40 would be better for motorcycles and any air cooled engines (E g if you feel like pampering your lawn mower!)

              • @Skips: What makes you say that? I own a motorcycle and do my own oil changes so am just curious.

                • @olympicwiz: The 5W40 is going to have more viscosity index improvers in it compared to the 10W40. These VIIs get crushed up in a motorcycle gearbox, so in use it will shear down to a 30 grade fairly quickly. The 10W40 will maintain it's viscosity better over an oil change interval.

Second reason is that the 10W40 mentioned here has exactly same specs as Penrite's equivalent motorcycle oil, i.e almost certainly the same stuff in a different bottle, but cheaper!

                  • @Skips: That's interesting, I never knew that!
