Different prices when clicking from shopback and direct.

    • Agoda do the same!

      • +2

I think Agoda are the most shifty with this sort of stuff.
Even though Hotels.com have the lowest Cashback, i often go with them for the 10th night free which is essentially a 10% averaged discount on top of the standard Shopback.

Do you have screenshots or sample hotel & dates? I keep on hearing this but never experience it myself. Thanks.

      • +1

Same. See these comments all the time but it never seems to happen to me.

      • +1

        Same! Never had this before

    • I didn't get that. I'm booking hotels for Vietnam at the moment and am logged in via Shopback in one browser and was doing incognito mode to compare but then logged into my Booking.com account and found the prices have been the same.
I was thinking they bumped the prices up to cover the 15% cost but surprisingly, a number of hotels have been cheaper to start with on Booking.com.

      • If you want to check. The Vanda Hotel in Da Nang has the cheapest option from 31/3/24 to 1/4/24 for $75 before and after going via Shopback.
        https://www.booking.com/hotel/vn/vanda-danang.en-gb.html

      • I'm looking at going to Da Nang for a few days, how did you decide on what area to stay in? e.g. what beach or peninsula etc.

    • I was looking this morning at a place i needed to book for work, it was $140 and when i clicked through shopback it was the same price so i guess YMMV

    • Agree prices rise with SB on some hotels, especially if there is a deal. It's the same via CR too.

Example is Feather factory, Queens New York, 16-24/4/24 1 person. Was $1752, but via SB $1923.
The discount price says B.com pays $170.06 which makes 1923 into 1752. Going via a cashback site CR or SB and the discount is no longer applied. They are paying that amount to CR or SB.
Booked this hotel last week with CR and it was still a saving (if the cashback is honoured), but only about $50.

These cashbacks are only a good deal if there is no promo for the hotel.

    • It depends on the location/hotel. I had this happen to me when i went to Japan and it was better off me booking without any Shopback. Just checked today though for some Italy Accomodation, no change in pricing with Shopback activated. Made the bookings and got the Shopback confirmation emails that it has been tracked.

    • Your doing it all wrong….i made $1500 from a Europe trip, and when there was a difference (maybe 1/10 bookings), i used amex credits or travel credits……it aint hard

    • Often you're right but the property I wanted to book had the same price.

  • +7

These guys jack the prices when you click thru to match the cashback. It should be illegal. It happened on all my USA reservations last week, so I used expedia.

dont risk it, shopback is trash. take a lower rate from cashrewards etc

    • User error. never had any issues with either SB or CR and to date I've racked up over $2k cashback on SB and $1.6k on CR.

    • Took your advice and cashrewards was lower for me, cancelled my shopback 15% and and with the cashrewards 6%

  • Just booked for Sydney and had prices prior to using Shopback on one browser, then on another used shopback and found the prices to be the same.

What is the point of sites like booking.com? I always find it's cheaper to book direct through the hotel's website anyway even after taking into account these cashback offers. What am I missing?

    • For chain hotels yes i always book direct but these sites are great for smaller boutique hotels and/or apartments etc

    • +1

it never is, i dont understand comments like this. im literally away every other weekend

    • I always check with the hotel direct against what is offered through these booking sites. For my booking just made it was cheaper via booking.com this time however other times its been the otherway.

      • We are going to Bali next month and staying at three different places and none were cheaper through these booking platforms.

    • Their genius program provides good discounts too

    • Particularly for smaller hotels

      • Immediate confirmation. Most smaller hotels don't have their own booking engine and require you to make a booking, wait for 1-2 days to get a confirmation. By the time it happens and if they're booked out, other hotels that you were looking may have become unavailable.
      • Even if some hotels do immediate confirmation, mostly they use a 3rd party booking engine which doesn't give cashback.
      • Some hotels do not honour the prices that you had booked, or sometimes they cheekily give the room to a walk-in customer who pays a higher price, and by the time you arrive would say they couldn't find your booking. I found that booking.com is pretty strong with enforcing the booking - they might lose the listing if found to be floating the rules.
      • Compared to other booking engines, I found booking.com to be reliable. I had one experience with another booking engine that I forgot to cancel a 4 night booking (no show). T&C of the booking said that I would have to pay the first night, but the hotel charged me the entire 4 nights. That booking engine couldn't (or didn't) do anything about it. That was the last time I used them.

Most of the time they have the same prices or cheaper compared to booking direct, plus you get cashback from booking.com. But of course check the prices before just to be sure.

    • How’s this…. Hotel was $218 on Booking.com and hotel was $243 at reception (walk in). They said they would price match, went to the back of reception, took the room off the aggregators and said we can only do it for $243! Crazy!

Just cancelled a few accommodations in Italy (free cancellation) and rebooked them with the 15% cashback. Got the same prices and confirmation emails from shopback that the cashback was tracked. Around $600 cashback!

Mine were 10-15% dearer… if you get a Genius discount I think you lose it for cashback deals.

      • Oh bugger, about to book some that at 'genius'

      • It must vary from location/country. I still kept the genius discounts, compared from different differences with cashback turned on and off. Oh well!

Mmm … I booked six weeks in Spain for May/June recently on Shopback/Booking.com and I'm confident there was no jacking on any of eight bookings (checked) .. ALSO I'm a many times repeat customer and the only problem I've ever had is s l o w payment. .. you just have to be patient, they get there in the end.. 🤭 ..!!

  • is this expired? I see 10% cashback clicking through the link provided…

    • Yes, the 15% cashback is only 12-8pm (AEDT)

      • So sad, I missed it by a few minutes…

  • damn!!!! missed 15%

  • Thanks ok, saved $100!

  • No price jack for me when clicked through shopback. Saved $170

  • Does anyone know if you change the dates of the booking does it affect cashback?
