Many a lead acid battery has blown up. During charging they give off H2 and O2 in just the right proportions to make a very explosive mix if not ventilated properly. Hence the quite onerous requirements when installing battery banks…

  • Bare in mind that its only a 0.5c discharge battery. For about $700 at altronics you can get a 1.0c 100ah lithium.

  • Do you need a special charger for these batteries?
    I have a ctek 15amp charger…

  • Hey guys, just a newbie question. How do we charge these batteries? If we do meed a charger, how much does a decent charge cost?

    • Can get away with a regular 12V car battery charger used for lead acids as the voltages line up enough for lifepo4. Also the BMS in the lifepo4 battery will protect the cells. But worth noting unlike Lead acid batteries, LifePO4 don't particular enjoy being kept topped up at 100% state of charge for long periods, it will make them degrade quicker. Other wise they last for ages, mine are now 10 years old have only lost 10% of there original capacity.

      • What brand do you have? Your experience is as it should be, but a cheap BMS that doen't properly balance the cells can kill them a lot quicker, hence the much shorter warranty for many brands.

        • Well my ones are just made with the bare LFP cells and my own BMS that just switches off an inverter/charger. Balancing with other devices (not a sleek all in one unit) its for off grid. But your totally right a cheap bms that cant keep the cells balanced isnt good. Although it may just show up as quickly diminishing capacity as the cells drift apart and trigger shut off early. With proper balance would restore that "missing" capacity. Not sure what sort of bms is in this jaycar battery. Prob something not that great…

  • Can you use this to run as backup power supply for my home security cameras? ;)

you could in one form another. only thing is lead acid batteries are better for keeping at 100% charged and at the ready as failover backup power. LFP superior in every other way except not good to leave them at 100% charge waiting for failover.
