For those who may not be aware, these still use the lightning connectors.

      Usb-C on the 10th gen?

      • +4

Yes, and expect most (if not all) Apple devices from 2023 onwards to have USB-C

      • That is correct

        • +1

          Spanish Armada…uhh…1588!

Thanks this is a no go then for me

    • that's good I dont need to buy usb c for charging

      im still using iphone 14

  • Someone find me the best deal on a pink ipad pretty please 😁

  • This or Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE?
    As a gift for Mum.

I would recommend iPad and the Apple ecosystem to people over 50s.

Also this iPad is a very capable tablet at a more affordable price, assuming your mom only needs it for daily media consumption.

Thank you @Max999, appreciate your input :)
Might just go with this IPad.

I second this. So many oldies 50 - 80 I have helped and when things go weird, Apple is much easier to remote support. (I am android phone for myself, but tablets is apple… lasts longer too with software updates)

        • +1

          What you can remote in?

          • @BatmanAU: If you have an iOS device, you can use Facetime to see the other persons screen. You cannot remotely control it, but it makes supporting your oldies far easier. I do that all the time for my old man. Initiate a Facetime call, share button is right there.

            • @ThithLord: You my friend, are a life saver, well with my mum, dads on Android

              • @BatmanAU: lol I literally came across it by accident, and I was like … I have been providing I.T. support for my dad for years with his phone, and this option has been right here?!

        • How do you remote into an iPad?

      • +1

Android ecosystem is not really designed around tablets, some apps function okay on them but they don't have the design requirements that apple do for app submission so there's no guarantees they will work correctly on a tablet sized screen.

You'll find it a frustratingly inconsistent experience where third party apps for services will often work better than official ones in terms of layout.

As a long term Android user I have come to accept the only decent tablet are the iPad lineup.

what an ageist and ignorant comment " would recommend iPad and the Apple ecosystem to people over 50s" age has nothing to do with if someone is computer literate or not.

      • Mom??? USAbargain or OZbargain?

For what it's worth Geekbench results are:
      s9 FE:
~1000 single core and ~2800 multicore

      9th gen ipad:
~1703 single core and ~3800 multicore.

      • Thank you @nitens, appreciate your input :)
Might just go with this IPad.

        • +2

I just got a 9th gen ipad for my partners mum…. It's a slick device, that runs well. The only real difference from my own android tablet is it's a <edit>12:9</edit> aspect ratio rather than a 16:9. So you end up with a sligtly smaller image when viewing widescreen media or you lose the edges of the scene.

For reading, apps and web browsing though the ipad kills.

          • @nitens: Thanks Nitens, the primary use will be watching content on Youtube/Netflix, do you reckon S9 FE might serve the purpose better?

            • @HHH-888: Maybe only very slightly yes to that… but I don't have an s9 FE to compare to. This is just my opinion though, and I certainly wouldn't suggest that the S9FE is even close to justifying the price premium.

In all honesty get the iPad you won't be disappointed.

      • Never really cared about benchmarks myself.

I’ve typically always had an Android tablet and an iPad and keep them for a long time. I usually use them for different purposes. I found for multimedia consumption and game emulation Android tablets are superior. iPad are superior if you want to invest in the ecosystem and utilise the 5 apps most people use that are designed to work on iPads but typically don’t have a good Android tablet experience. I wouldn’t consider the S9 FE because no amoled screen. The last good midrange Samsung tablet was the tab S5e. Samsung adopted the strategy of using the amoled screens on their premium tablets only. I prefer the aspect ratio on Android tablets over the iPad, and despite my iPad Pro being bigger than my old Android tablet, it displays multimedia content at a similar size. The AMOLED screen I prefer too. But I would never pay premium for Android tablet until they offer 7 major operating system updates like Apple have been doing since the iPad Air 2. I’m happy to use my old cheap Android tablet until a long supported Android tablet is offered.

If she uses an Android phone, get the Samsung. If she uses an iPhone, get the iPad.

      • +1

She does have an Android phone, I'm looking for a new phone too.
        Appreciate your input :)

    • Probably only go with Samsung if there was a use case for the pen or your mum was already on Samsung ecosystem.

      • She'd probably be using it only for media consumption over Youtube/Netflix, I don't think she'd be using the S Pen at all (I may be wrong, she may like it). But I'm sure the S Pen is a nice to have, and it comes at no cost.
        Appreciate your input :)

Can by a first gen Apple pencil for the ipad (~$150) after the fact if she likes the idea of a stylus and still be ahead on cost.

    • +1

If your setting it up for your Mum, make sure to visit your local library and get there apps installed so she can read magazines/books etc. That and some games :)

  • Can anyone advise if this is a good tablet for general use over the new Samsung galaxy s9 FE?

    • +3

This is a very capable tablet for video streaming and general apps use as long as you are not gaming too much or planning to store too much stuff on it.

  • wooo thanks OP. Been tracking the price for this and saw that it went up briefly to $549 and thought I've missed the boat. Anyone know if they have plenty of stock in store?

  • Tempting but trying to make the move to USB-C only devices

    • +2

This one comes with a charger and usb-c to lightening cable though… So it's not a huge tax in just having an extra cable to carry.

      • Thanks for letting me know!

    • iPad 10 has USB-C, can use the 15% off cards on them too.

  • +1

I still have a double take every time I see 64GB in 2023.

Confirming that iPads don't allow removable storage, such as MicroSD?

      • +1

I don't think apple has ever supported that in their entire history of handheld devices. They're probably responsible for the rest of the industry ditching removable storage.

  • I upgraded our 4 * old iPads to this one 2 years ago, and I paid slightly cheaper than this price. It is amazing that this iPad still holds so much value after 2 years.

    • +1

They're $50 more expensive RRP from apple now ($549) than they were in 2021 ($499).

  • Would love this, but I don't have a Coles near me.

  • Has anyone been able to confirm that the gift cards can be used on Apple products? I’m tempted to do this but don’t want to get stung with a gift card that doesn’t work at the checkout.

    • If you check the 15% off Celebration gift card deal linked in OP’s description, someone posted in that deal saying they were able to purchase an iPad at Officeworks yesterday using Celebration gift cards.

I will add that the only Apple product you are not allowed to purchase at Officeworks using Celebration gift cards (or any other types of gift cards) is Apple gift cards. That is because Officeworks has a gift card policy that officially restricts the type of payment methods you can use to pay for any gift cards sold at Officeworks.

      • +1

Oh nice, I didn’t see that. Thanks.

      • +1

Bought one this morning and can confirm it worked. I used 4x $100 celebration cards.

    • Yes, I bought one today from office works with the celebration gift cards

  • +1

Also remember to factor in repairs/warranty when deciding on a tablet.
Samsung generally has a poor reputation for warranties. After dealing with samsung/retailer/surly 3rd party repairer, i avoid them now.
Apple in comparison is like a 1950’s cult , make a booking/go to nearest store/be greeted by overly enthusiastic worker excited that youre part of the apple family.

  • Looks like out of stock at most the stores near me in QLD

    • i cant see webpage at all

  • +1

Thanks alot OP. Kids school need them to have an ipad starting next year. Last time we waited too long and ipads were hard to get hold of over Xmas, Jan. For interest when I picked ours up officeworks capalaba had 4 silver left. Also the local coles at capalaba park shopping centre has the celebrations cards with the officeworks stamp. Heard that should not matter, but Im a risk adverse chap. Don't need $400 worth off stussy shirts from city beach…

  • If you're a Costco member, they have them slightly cheaper ($439) and with free shipping:

    • +3

I think the main reason you'll buy this is because of the 15% off celebration gift cards.

  • Does this work well with Apple Pencil or related stylus ?

  • Seems to be expired on OW website as of this morning
