  • I thought Qantas is only doing SYD-HND from this month or thereabouts. BNE and MEL go to NRT?

    • That's what I thought, and after clicking one of the links seems to be correct, the Qantas options are to NRT

    • SYD will run twice daily to HND (one day service and one overnight) in both directions shortly.
This moves the current MEL / BNE to HND (shared across the week) to being daily services but back to NRT.

Also note that very soon Jetstar willl also move from Gold Coast (OOL) to BNE.

    Are these 'good' prices?

    • They are 'pretty good' I'd say

    • For today's times yes.

Gone are the days of Jetstar $500 return flights unfortunately.

      • I never got a sub 600 direct flight, it was always a stop in Coolangatta or Cairns, a long total travel time and bullshit jstar add-ons like food and luggage

I'm much happier paying 1000 to fly with a proper airline, get fed, get luggage and save some time, energy and stress.

          I had $380 return to Osaka once…

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: 2016 or 17 I had direct flights to Narita for <$400 with all my hiking gear.

            Direct 10 hour flights.

Now it's all multi flight, stop overs in awful places and extra costs for everything…

@Telios: I dream of them coming back man, I need to get to my favorite country without insane flight costs, fear they're gone for good but

  • Any good deals to Phuket?

  • omfg so goooood

Any good deals to London next July/August?

  • Good for qantas pricing but am looking for october next year and thinking do i wait to book or should i book with a japanese airline. I guess i’m wondering whose the best to fly with

    • +1

In all honesty, if your travelling economy JAL/ANA and Qantas have a pretty similar full service economy product. If your considering business class then definitely look at the Japanese alternatives

    • +3

It's probably a bit early for flights in October next year as flights only start to become available about a year in advance, with some airlines only releasing seats about 300 days before flights.

You don't necessarily get better deals booking well in advance as well. You could probably wait it out a bit as all airlines should have sales from time to time and with the current economy climate, I don't see ticket prices increasing.

You will still need to book your tickets a few months in advance for the best deal, but I'd almost use a 300-90 day time frame for the best time to book tickets.

Depending on what port you travel out of can also impact your decision on which airline you choose. Sydney has the most options with with ANA, JAL and Qantas providing service. Melbourne also has QF and JAL and Brisbane has QF and Jetstar (direct). The Japanese airlines service wise are usually better, but Qantas is fine with ok inflight service and still a reasonable luggage allowance.

VA go via Cairns, all in the domestically configured narrow bodies. They don't offer a full service product and in fact offer a service similar to Jetstar. My main issue is their prices have been way to close to full service airlines for a very sub-standard product.

      • I’m going from melb and i believe JAL was about $1100 return each direct flights and kinda sucked that up and only wanted to book so soon as a birthday gift. I also did find that year some places wouldn’t quote beyond 300 days or so. Maybe i have to think of a makeshift ticket in bday card whilst waiting lol

        • +1

Yeah just have an IOU for ticket as particularly after covid, airlines are reluctant to oversell to many tickets well before the trip as if there are any changes to the schedule, I think there is a lot of extra cost in resolving problems.

          • @Pcoder: You raise many good points and have been so helpful! Inc toby95. I was kind of backing myself into a corner booking so early but i think even to accept current prices and wait is okay and maybe ill make a fake ticket to put in the birthday card 😀

    • +1

Wait to book, sales are not out yet for October and its not a peak period so there will definitely be sales that include Oct timings. Also JAL and ANA crap all over Qantas even in economy, they are not similar at all.

      • Even as i looked at prices qantas was the most pricey anyway so i was definitely leaning to the Japanese airlines but now i will wait longer to book

  • So good, unless you're a teacher and can only fly school holidays :(

Skip Qantas and fly with the Japanese Airlines…

  • Ah - so they will undercut their Jetstar price out of Brisbane.

    Good to know.

Pretty crazy though. $200 cheaper than the basic Jetstar fair which excludes everything. Same time, same destination.

    • Possibly say one advantage with Jetstar is they will also fly direct from Brisbane to Kansai airport in February. Yes you can connect out of Haneda and Narita to either ITM or KIX, but some people might prefer the direct flight to Kansai.

Qantas are still yet to reinstate their Sydney to Kansai service and none of the Japanese airlines have any direct service.

Jetstar does can have hopeless, but they do a few things better than Virgin, including being able to pre order meals, which just seems silly that you can do this for such a long flight as it allows you to hopefully get something more than a shelf stable food item.

      • If you are off to Osaka for sure.

My comment is directly comparing Brissy to Narita.

        • Kind of depends with Jetstar, they can have some good specials and including baggage and food can be cheaper. The big issue is without a massive sale, they tend to not be as good value and can end up costing similar to full service as even if you bring some food aboard, you've ended up paying for that food compared to full service where you didn't.

A lot of this recent cheaper Qantas prices is due to them going from 2 Haneda flights, one Sydney and one Melbourne/Brisbane to 2 Sydney Haneda flights daily and 1 flight daily from Melbourne and Brisbane to Narita (4 daily). They've basically doubled capacity in a short time, whereas jetstar hasn't.

I also don't believe long haul low cost works that we'll as things like airplane meals are created in big batches with heaps of efficiency and there isn't as much 'fat' to cut off as most operation serve a practical purpose. Your still going to need to eat and drink for such a long period from land and it just makes sense to include a meal.
