Lexar NM790 PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD: 2TB $129, 4TB $265 + Delivery ($0 SYD C&C) @ Mwave

280

Copy and paste of the deal posted by @integral
Looks like the 2TB and 4TB are still on sale, but the 4TB has gone up in price by $10. Still a pretty good deal for what seems to be a decent PCIe 4.0 NVME drive.
Apparently this could be the bottom of prices for NAND flash so might be time to stop HODLing if you have been.

Here are some reviews, all look very positive:

but it’s $255 at bpctech. is the delivery any cheaper from mwave?

    • +5

Shipping for this drive is free from bpctech…. so no

    • +2

BPC is free shipping for Metro

  • Picked one of the 4tb drives before it went up $10, excellent drive.

  • Is this good for PS5?

    • +1

      Yes. Why not?

      • With all the TLC QLC terminologies, slow random write speeds etc really confused as to what works for PS5 and what doesnt?

        • +1

At a minimum you need to make sure the SSD is PCIe Gen4 and has a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or higher.

the more you go in depth the more you ripe questions. so just make it easy on yourself, and buy what you feel like good. it has what ps5 minimum requirement is. I would not think more, unless I need to buy something for very important data. but still nothing is 100%

If it is for PS5, you might want to consider the version with heatsink ($10 more). Sony recommends you use a heatsink. You could technically get a heatsink from AliExpress for about $8, but for $10, it is pre-installed, ready to be used.

NM790 is technically above the minimum recommend spec set by Sony. However, some people will nitpick that it is DRAMless. Don't worry too much, a lot of people are running SSDs below specs with their PS5s.

  • Good drive, but watch out, runs hot as f you'll need a heatsink
I never thought I would need one - my other two M2 drives are fine, but this one (2TB) version was idling around 60C and any actual work pushed it to 70C
And this all in a well ventilated midi tower
    So yeah, get a heatsink

    • So not suitable to upgrading on laptop?

      • Not sure. Desktop results can be different laptop results. A lot of people love SK Hynix SSDs due to their low power consumption on desktops. However, AnandTech's tests on laptops revealed that majority of SSDs have different power consumption when running idle on laptops and a lot of SSDs basically have the same laptop power consumption as the SK Hynix SSDs.

Also, your laptop might already have a heat spreader or mini heatsink for SSD slot(s). 60-70 degrees for SSDs is fine because most SSD's thermal throttle doesn't start at 70 degrees.

      • Not likely

I bought a 4TB version of this drive and put it into a Legion pro 7i RTX4080 gen 8 as a games drive.
The Legion has plates to cover all the ram, Wifi and both M.2 slots and each slot has thermal pad covering on the plates.

The temps on idle or doing small tasks was 35c but with power mode on high doing MS2020 flight sim the temps would go up to 60 to 720c at times but no alarms triggered and certainly would recommend a heat sink as with any laptop and especially units with no heat covers as most only have space for single sided NVMe drives so worth the extra $10 or whatever.

I like that Lexar are optioning this drive with heatsinks but too big to go inside some laptops, so wish they also optioned a half side heatsink solution for single sided drives for laptops.

Speeds are also good ie: CrystalDiskIMark: Reads 7118.63 MB & Write 6434.47 MB makes a great game drive imo.

        Hope that helps!

        ps:
Anybody know how much Mwave charges for postage?

        • Thanks for the sharing, I’ve gone with SK hynix p31 hoping better power/temp management.

    • You're right. Running on 51 degrees on idle. Can you recommend any heatsink for it?

  • Thanks OP, got the 4TB to add onto my PC.

  • How's the 4TB compare to others around the $250-$350 mark?

This is SLC Cache so better then QLC but not as good as TLC and this has no DRAM? Anyone know of the cheapest 4TB TLC cache going around with DRAM? Mainly want to use this to condense 2-3 older SSDs that have large game library on it to one. Operating system is on another drive but want the fastest game load times especially for things like Battlefield where SSD makes a huge difference.

    • This is absolutely fine for games use - that's one use case where all drives are very similar. Load times barely change between the fastest and slowest SSDs.

  • and infuriatingly, the stock shipment has been delayed…
