  • Sweeeeet, grabbed 3, hopefully good to use in between the spokes on motorcycle rims!

  • +11

Does anyone know if it's wheely good?

    • +9

      it's mag-nificent

    • +1

Did you whealy just reuse the same pun?

    • +5

Bloody expensive, and honestly is significantly less effective than Mirch Grime off (which is much cheaper, stronger and lasts longer). Ive gone through probably 10 bottles of wheely clean and recently swapped and the difference is night and day, much cheaper on your pocket too as it can be diluted

      • +2

Where do you usually buy from and at what price?

        • +5

Mirch is online, normally have sales on for 25% off on alot of occasions. At the monent 5L is $70 so at 25% off its $52 which is for 5 Litres. Thats $10 a litre , this bowdens is $14 for half a litre (500ml) and considering you can dilute the mirch 1:1 its even better value. Aside from that the mirch stuff is sooo much stronger than the bowdens i did one wheel of each and was like the heck (been a long term bowdens user)

      • +3

yeah I think my next wheel cleaner will be P&S
        https://www.detailstore.com.au/products/p-s-brake-buster-whe…

      • I've been eyeing these for a while but waiting to finish up my Gyeon supply. Have you compared the Dragon Blood to the Grime off? The former appears to react to iron like the Bowdens and Gyeon stuff does. Sounds like Grime off doesn't? They sell a 2-pack of Dragon Blood + Grime off to trial both. Good marketing LOL

        • Haha yeah they have iron reactive wheel cleaner and then standard grime off. Thing is you dont need to react to iron all the time to get the wheels clean. The grime off will make your wheels looking new again without the iron decontamination, kind of like decontaminating the car (you dont need to do this every wash, maybe only ever 6 months or a year). I know a few detailers who now soley use Grime Off just cause its so much more effective (its alkaline) and the iron decontamination is a waste cause you literally drive around the next day and it gets contaminated again haha, so just focus on getting it clean

    • I've seen folks use this on wheely bins!

  • Nice. Needed a new bottle too.

  • Thanks OP for the heads up - I just finished up this bottle from 2021!

  • Any wheel cleaning tool recommendations?

    • +1

Bowden's also sells wheel cleaning brushes

  • +1

Whats the use of this wheel cleaner? Cant you just clean with water and a pressure hose? Will it somehow keep the brake dust away?

    • +7

It's just easier to remove brake dust.

    • +2

Brake dust can be a killer to get off. This is a pretty good product.
To keep off dust, you can add polish or wax to the rims, but I'm not OTT. Although, rims really pop when you clean behind the spokes as well…

    • +4

Yeh loosens the brake dust and grime, makes it easy to pressure wash off without hardly needing to agitate it with a brush.

    • +3

A pressure washer will only get rid of so much, especially on the inside of a rim. It's like using soap to wash your hands rather than just using water, you'll notice they'll be a lot cleaner, try it 😁.
And no, it doesn't keep brake dust away unfortunately. For that is coat your alloys in something like ceramic, and that should make them easier to clean.
I use Armor All, a pressure washer, and elbow grease, does the job nicely.

      • +1

OK, will give it a try, thanks everyone for answering.

      • Bowden's wet dreams can also help coat as a bit of a preventative. But they usually don't help alot, especially driving a VAG car zz

    • +4

It has to be used on DRY wheels though. Don't go wetting it, then spraying it. You could, no harm done, just that you'd dilute it.

Keep a bucket of soapy water, and a brush at hand. That bucket will get filthy and you'll have to change per tyre. Keep two, one clean one dirty, if you can.

Spray on Wheely Clean to DRY wheels, follow any instructions. Don't let it dry, just dwell and agitate. Get this brush kit from amazon for $28 and you're sorted. Use the brushes to get a nice clean wheel. Wash off and repeat if needed.

      • @John Doh

        • Got it. Thanks mate :)

      • I just saw this video and realised i have never cleaned the wheels behind the wheel spokes. Its fully dark there. Do you think that break dust would have eaten into the rim at that parrt? I think I havve to remove the wheels if I have to clean it thorougly there.

        • +1

Oh dear, what a true sin!

Well, now you know. Watch Chris Fox's video on how to clean and detail your car. Forward to the wheels. You start with what wheels cos they're the dirtiest. Also, wear crap clothes in case the brake dust comes off on it. Also, gloves is recommended because of the gunk. It's just sticky and will not wash off easy.

Don't worry about removing it, that's a bit OTT. If you use the brushes in my link above, you'll be able to get it as clean as can be (95%).

Just make sure you get nice and low so you can see it from all angles. The different brushes will also help.

      • Wouldn't recommend that long brush for behind the spokes, looks super scratchy.

  • Consider getting the 5L tanks when they are on sale. Much better value.

  • Any good deal for windscreen cleaning liquid (to pour into its container to mix with water)?

    • +1

Bug off, when it's on sale. $3-$5.

      • I already got one at $5. It was good in my previous experience

  • +1

I remember buying a 4L Meguiars Wheel Brightener for 30 bucks 4 years ago. I'm pretty sure I have enough wheel cleaner to cover me and my family for the next 10 years. Works just as well as this for way less money and they both smell equally bad.

  • Looking for a tar remover. there is a Bowden's Own Ta Ta Tar. Anyone used it? How is it? Full price on their website though.

    • It works well. Buy on sale, like a true ozbargainer. Compare Repco, SCA, autobarn and automotive super store. They have eBay stores as well so if you have ebay plus, you can get some extra discount that way too.

      • Sure, I will wait for it to go on sale.

  • +1

How does this compare to Meguiar's Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner?

    • +1

They are both good. I’ve used both and can’t really tell any difference

      • Thank you. Just googled, and Bowdens isn't for the tyres? My tyres get very muddy - would the wheely clean work on the tyres as well? TBH have been fairly happy with the Meguiars as it works very well. But it isn't on sale, so there's that.

        • You could probably use it for tyres, but their Orange Agent cleaner (linked in post) would be better.

          • +1

            @brifog: @tik tok, yes, this ^^
            No WC on tyre walls.
Source : i rang BO to ask them when I had the same question.

Orange agent on the tyre walls. With a soft brush. Or the turtle wax foam spray. Or even car shampoo, if you don't want to spend extra. Just make it nice and sudsy.

            • @lordra: Cheers mate. I will probably stick to Meguiar's Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner

        • Orange Agent cleaner. I bought the Eclipse Foam solution and use that to clean my tyres only. Fill that in bucket and use the tyre brush.

    • I just bought the meguairs, so not sure.

But this one works pretty well, but man the odur is strong and takes getting used to!

      • You're meant to spray it on your wheels not snort it.

    • Get mirch grime off/dragon blood . Much cheaper, can be diluted and honestly a lot stronger

      • I tried that and it works but spray triggers goes shit and ruined 2 of them as i dont wash every week

  • +2

Not to be confused with Broden's Own which requires 10 bottles per wheel.

  • +3

I don't rate this product, doesn't get off much more than a straight pressure washer.

    • Maybe you're not cleaning brake dust then? Or your wheels have amazing protection on it.

      • -1

I don't understand what do YOU mean? if I spray on this before I Pressure Wash or I just Pressure Wash the tyres it seems like there is still the same amount of brake dust left on the wheels I still have to scrub them no matter what. So what is the point of actually using this product

        • +1

if I spray on this before I Pressure Wash or I just Pressure Wash the tyres it seems like there is still the same amount of brake dust left on the wheels

Of course there is, you just pressure washed the wheel cleaner away !!!

You need to put this on the wheels and then agitate with a brush. Then just hose off, and there won't be any brake dust left on the wheels.

          • @Nom: This. Just did it for my motorbike today. Worked a charm. Definitely needed the brushes to get into the nooks and crannies. I have three different brushes for different bits.

  • Product has a weird smell to it.

    • +1

Well it no longer smells like arse

      • Did they change the smell of it? I have a bottle from a few years back and it has a really strange smell. Kind of like the chemical equivalent to liquorice.

  • Thanks, I picked up the last one at my local as well as a 750ml Boss Gloss for $14.

  • Cool. 3 should last me to the end of my days, thanks…. along with a bit of other repco cheapbits.

  • Wheel cleaner from any brand is usually the worst value. Barely enough to clean 8 wheels (2 washes).

Even at half price, that's $7 a wash just on the wheels, and you still have to scrub.

    • How many spray pumps are you doing per wheel dude?!

      • -1

I didn't count, but ample amount, you want it to cover all areas and dripping, certainly more than simply misting the surface.

        • You don't need anywhere near that much. Just a few sprays over the wheel face, then rub with your wheel brush.

You should get many many washes from one bottle 🤷‍♂️

Do you have a really complicated wheel design ?

          • @Nom: Yep, this. I get many washes from my bottle. With my bike it's even easier, I even apply twice and still have loads left over.

  • +1

Don't forget that "NRMA members receive a 5% discount off full retail price items everyday at Repco."

My NRMA Blue Membership Free for 12 Months

    • Yep, but this ain't full price so doesn't apply.

  • Just be aware with this cleaner if you have any anodising on them, it will strip the colour out, I sadly found out the hard way. I spoke to a wheel repair business and he has spoken to Bowdens about concerns with the previous formula damaging wheels but am unsure on this latest version.

The Agent Orange is my go to degreaser, my brother even swapped his mechanical business to using this over harsh degreasers as its non toxic and doesnt damage paint etc if you get it on it.

    • +1

you are spot on, I have both and i use Orange agent or poor boys world acid free wheel cleaner

  • Brodens

  • This is good but wow do you go through a lot of it, expensive per use

  • I just use aldi orange baby wipes and dry it with soft cloth. Much better and quicker than any spray but i don’t let them get too dirty. Once a week as it takes 1min per wheel.

  • Sparesbox_auto. on eBay
Bowden’s Naked Glass. 5 litres. $61.95 less 17% with eBay plus with code OCT17
