I remember when the 2tb had 1600tbw. Cheaping out now.

    • This or the Lexar with heatsink from BPC with Free MrBeast choc?

    Suddenly like YMTC?

    Spend $44 more for the same size but more than 10 times faster;

      Also 3x more TBW

Different form factor. NVMe is preferable if you've got the slot

That’s the thing holding me back, no empty slots. So I need to clone smaller drives to larger via usb first then replace, which means buying a usb to pcie adapter first.

And since replacing also means pulling out the GPU and motherboard fan (it’s an x570), I figure I might as well wait until I buy a 5800x3d or move to an entirely new platform.

4gb on sata is good enough for bulk storage.

Depending on your X570, there are 2 solutions:

          • If your X570 has another X16 looking slot, it is likely it looks like a X16, but is only wired as a X4. Assuming it is not sharing bandwidth with the second m.2 slot (i.e. it gets its own X4), you can buy PCIe gen 4 x4 to m.2 card.
          • If that slot is shared or you already have something using that X4 slot, but if you have a spare X1 slot, you could get something like this:

          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005480799461.html

However, you need to get the one with standard profile, that one I found is low profile card. While you could run the m.2 at x1 mode, it is a big sacrifice in performance.

          • @netsurfer: I already have two m.2 adapters using X4 and X1, I've exhausted what my lazy ass can get away with!

Problem is those two have a 4TB and a 2TB, the two onboard m.2 slots have 500GB and 1TB and are the ones I should replace. But that involves pulling a whole lot of stuff apart. (there's also that the 500GB is a much higher quality, faster boot drive, so really I should replace it with a 980pro or something. The 1TB is just games though)

@freefall101: Buy 5800X3D now to entice you to re-org your SSDs. LOL…

              • @netsurfer: That's what I did, lol. 5800X3D upgrade gave me the motivation to move a bunch of other parts around, including M.2, lol.

        • Yes, upgrading M2 drives is a lot more hassle than 2.5 or 3.5 inch drives (I have only had to do it once, to a 2TB boot drive; 1TB was getting too small for me).

While SSD prices are dropping, mechanical hard disks seem to be going up. I just checked UMart and an 8TB Seagate Iron Wolf is $340; the cheapest 8TB drive was WD Blue 5640RPM at $230.

  • Cheaper than NVMe M.2 drives, but a lot slower.
If you have the M.2 slot, go for the NVMe M.2.

    • not for $50 per 1TB though.. at least for another 12-18 months I think

    YMTC Ti600 is reviewed here
    https://post.smzdm.com/p/a8xgxopl/

This is also a QLC drive. The speed for out of cache, full disk write is 169MB/s.

    • So, there is not much YMTC can do with QLC either. Same aggressive dynamic SLC cache and other it is exhausted, it didn't manage to outshine other QLC NAND.

SATA SSDs have not come in price as M2, but this is a good price for a 4TB SSD. I have an old Hyper-V testing Server that does not support M2 SSDs, so the second best option is SSD SATA.
If you have free M2 slots, it will be crazy to get to this SATA with the Lexar 790,such an excellent SSDs, being less than $50 more.

If you think there are none-QLC drives with a different brand of flash at this price, then let's hear about them.

Oh, that's right, there aren't any.

Anyone who wants a big-name none-QLC 4TB drive is going to be paying a lot more than this.

Lets us know how your order goes. Apparently pccg are moving and have a 3week order backlog.

    • +1

Ill never use pccg again. They've gone off the rails the last few years. Turned off their phone lines completely. Click and collect has been on again, off again. Randomly split orders into multiple shipments and dont want to talk about it, etc etc. Emails take days to respond, live chat turned off.

Bought out and sold out, i think. Shame. Nothing like they once were.

A guy yelled at me during covid for rocking up on a motorbike to click and collect and said cars only. I was stood 5m back from the bike with an open box, told him i didnt own a car, and if he'd rather stick his head in the boot of a virus box than throw it in open air, i could come back later. Gave me more stick before giving me the thing id paid for. This after i drove to the middle of nowgere.

Never again. Scorptec all the way.
