  • Do you have to use impact bits with an impact driver?

    • Nope

    • No they will fit in a normal chuck.

      • I know they fit, I more mean does it damage the bit if it's not impact rated

        • +2

OK, so you're asking about bits that aren't these bits? No wonder people were confused.

Don't use non-impact-rated bits in an impact driver unless you're feeling really lucky.

        • +2

Well they don’t put the impact label on there for fun

    • yes, or they will snap in half like they did for me. i only buy impact rated bits because i can use them on both impact and drill. where you get non impact bit and can only use it on drill. impact bits are so much stronger, you will strip the screw and never strip the bit. while non impact you will strip the bit.

  • Can someone explain what the point of the short bits that don't lock into the chuck? They can fall out and are a bit of a hassle compared to the locking ones.

    • short bits that don't lock into the chuck

Usually the chucks have a magnet but like one I've that I rarely use doesn't hold the bits so it's a bit annoying.

They go into magnetic bit holders.

    • not a hassle at all. actually more convenient if you have to swap between bits often to finish your job if you don't have 2 drills.

if you have one drill and a magnetic bit holder you can easily switch between 2 or more bits for your job. also the shorter bits are cheaper to replace over the long ones.

  • impact bits

They are more durable than the cheap stuff like for example the Bosch green line or no brand (or branded/rebadged) Chinese import bits and others just to get an idea so they won't last long with an impact driver, the cheap ones also can damage the screw's head.

  • +1

For those asking about the difference between impact and non impact.

      Interesting, thanks.

I assumed impact bits were better in every situation, but now I know better.

      TLDR of the article:

Non-impact bits will generally last longer, but impact bits are better when you are pushing the limits of your tool - ie. driving big bolts or screwing into metal

  • All bits wear out. Impact bits last a bit longer but not much.

    • Hence why kits like this have multiples of the same bit

    • you really have to be putting in a lot of torque for you to wear them out. my impact bits last a very very very very long time. non impact bits will wear out fast though.

  • thanks op - ordered - cheers

  • Bunnings’ brand Fullboar is selling at $39.95 (saw it dropped to $20 ish once) and the DeWalt set is selling at $39 at Amazon. Is Makita brand worth the extra $5?

    • i use makita drill bits because they have never failed me. i also have makita drill and love how my bits colour match my drill, lol. really a preference thing for me. but makita gear on sale is a no brainer for me to purchase.

  • Was about to get a set but spending a little more on the Makita XPS series (new series from Makita, from reviews last longer)

  • I’m not convinced these bits are any better than cheaper brands. I had a similar set and first use i sheared a bit. They were like butter.
They may have makita branding, certainly not the quality you associate with makita.
