I think this is a new product and similar products sell for $300-$500 elsewhere. Plus somehow this bulky product qualifies for free shipping, saving you $50+! Was looking at the $89 version but I think this one is worth the extra dollars given the extra features and free shipping!

Shoot like a pro! This portable basketball system with adjustable height is ideal for shooting practice among children and adults alike.

  • What are the features that justify the extra $100? Is it that the height can be adjusted quickly and easily?

I was previously planning to buy the $89 version later this month.

Yeah I reckon the height/ratchet system makes it more expensive. (also making it 15kg heavier??)
Also, the cheaper version's backboard seems smaller.

    • +4

Reverse layups are tricky on this setup without taking yourself out on the post.

    • +1

Yes, the quick height adjustment is a great feature if you have small and big kids wanting different heights. Also, I think it has a spring-loaded ring. The $189 looks more sturdy and has wheels as well though yes, it’s also heavier so it’ll depend on your preference.

      • +2

        The $89 one has wheels.
        "Features: Large base with wheels"

    • You are better off buying a 2nd hand Spalding system off marketplace etc these are garbage

      • +2

Except our 2 year old Spalding has a perfect hole in the backboard, found the disk sitting on the ground. Our lads have fixed with duct tape.

Any outdoor product can fail, even the expensive ones…

        • +2

From memory spalding backboards have a 5 year warranty

    • +3

We bought the $89 one early 2021 (for $69 from memory) and it's finally almost dead. For the money it's been surprisingly good!
      - It's location gets all-day sun and the backboard faded (no big deal).
      - The net is rubbish and fell off after about 6 weeks.
      - The chain net we replaced it with has been slowly pulling the retaining bits off the ring and there's only 5 left but the ring itself is still level.
      - The base started leaking water after about 12 months so we filled it with sand instead.
      - It does move/wobble a bit in the wind and has slightly bent the base support arms which means we've got a paver under one side to level it out.
      EDIT
      - Changing height on the $89 version isn't too hard, just fiddly unless you have another person to help.

        Thanks for the insight!

        • No worries!

  • +1

Would be pretty hesitant to spend any more than $20 on an Anko product.

In the market for one of these and everyone seems to recommend the Spalding ones…. but I'm just not sure.

No reviews and no info elsewhere online. Anyone got one or is this a new range?

    • +1

My friend has the Spalding one and it seems good though it’s almost $500 at Rebel. Rebel had 20% off plus 10% cash back last night but it was still almost double the price of this one here.

      • RRP $799
The 2 deals would have brought it to like $600

          • @ozbmm: the backboard on this one should be more like 52" with the width being 110cm

            • @grrrr: I don’t think they do it like TVs (diagonally). 110cm will be just over 43”.

              • @ozbmm: The 44" and 52" Spalding backboards on Rebels site are measured diagonally.

                • +1

@grrrr: This 52” Spalding one has backboard measuring 132x81cm so the one I posted here is definitely not 52” with the width just measuring 110cm ;-)

                  • +1

                    @ozbmm: Hahahaha.

The Spalding site you directly linked states:

"The backboard size is measured from the left to the right side of the board, ranging from 44" to 72" (107cm to 183cm). Spalding ranges boards in the following sizes: …"

Yet the Rebel site has "Features … Board size: 52" (132cm) diagonally".

                    Classic Rebel.

Does Rebel have incorrect product info, or are they selling smaller boards with bigger numbers?

    • If its for your kids to try out, then spending $89 or $189 is worth the risk. If they love shooting hoops then upgrade, otherwise, you will just waste money.

    I'd prefer a 10 ft one.

    • +5

      3.05m is 10 ft

    • -1

I'd be worried about it dragging along the ground…

      • Worried about the wheels damaging your pavers or deck?

        • -1

          Wheels?

When JV said he'd prefer a 10 ft one, I didn't realise he was talking about a basketball hoop. I was more worried about what his "deck" may damage!

          Forgiveness please…

  • +4

Definitely interested as I've promised my kids a portable hoop for xmas. As much as I'd prefer a sturdier spalding one, not sure if it's worth double the price considering my kids are young (5 + 8) and probably won't notice any difference…

    • I’m in the same boat

      • +1

I have the $89, perfectly fine for kids. Will upgrade to this once the $89 rusts through.

    • Find a 2nd hand one on marketplace etc got my last one for $100 had been used once

      • +2

The issue with this is getting it home. It's much easier to transport a box than a 10foot poll, plus this deal includes delivery. I've tried second hand too and it wasn't worth the effort once I started to load up. I realised the base leaked from to a large crack and it's just not easily disassembled, so I quit and just bought new. As a first system for kids to last 3 or so years this seems a solid deal.

        • +1

remember well spending hours one xmas eve assembling one of these damn things for my sister in law - what a pain it was spending hours out in the dark yard trying to get it erected by torchlight. If you aren't that handy (I'm certainly not) then be prepared.

        • Fair I just pulled the backboard off both times and had no issues at all guess you had some bad luck

  • Do it

  • +2

I have this exact hoop. It's good quality for the price imo. Sturdy and great for practice shooting if you got the space.

    • Is the backboard strong ?

      • It's polycarbonate which is durable and no different to what Spalding sell at 2 to 3 times the price. It won't feel the same as shooting off a proper glass board at your local recreational centre, if you want that you have to cough up significantly more coin.
This board won't sound solid when hit by a ball but won't break if treated well.

    • Thanks for the quick review! Appreciate it.

  • anyone know a good netball one that won't break- have gone through 3 cheapies!!

Please don’t buy these, invest in a well grounded(concrete) basketball post, at least in VIC

My neighborhood have several of these flying around and resulting in safety risk for drivers and home owners, during the crazy VIC winds(like yesterday)

    • +1

They are literally flying around your street?

    • +2

With a filled base these things would weigh more than a goat.

Multiple instances of them flying at cars in your single neighbourhood? Pretty wild.

      • I thought the exaggeration was obvious xd , it isn’t that bad they fly 10ft high/

but yes they do travel across from peoples driveway to the streets

I guess a lot of physics can explain how such heavy items can move 10-20ft across- center of gravity, the reduction in friction during heavy rains, etc etc

        • +1

I’d have thought a more realistic driving hazard would be the possibility of driving up your driveway with the honest intention of parking your car in your garage behind a roller door, before being stuck by a concreted basketball pole blocking the entry.

I’ve only got a small 2.7m hoop with half sized plastic water-filled base, and it’s never moved an inch, including in the cyclonic storms and floods which hit Western Sydney twice last year.

    • +2

Most people use these for driveways and the smart ones lower them on windy days. They serve a purpose and suit those that don't want a permanent fixture. On my property it is not viable to concrete a post in to a permanent location and a solution like this works well as I can move the system to the available space when required. Don't get me wrong, many would love a full half court with a concreted in post but that's just not practical for most.

    fragile as hell.

    • From experience?

      • -1

yes, i am from this industry

        • +3

I think ozbmm meant "do you have experience with this product". Not "do you have an opinion on something based on its price and the retailer".

        • +1

Should probably have a “I sell a competing product to this so have a vested interest in you not buying the one in this post” disclaimer of some type perhaps.

  • Is it like the Everfit hoops because they are still about $300 for the ones that look like this

  • Does anyone see free shipping? Because it comes up as $50 for me

    • No, the free shipping got pulled after a day or two…

      • Oh Kmart has cottoned on. Shall I expire this deal then?
