          • @dongltron: I finally caved and headed out to my local HN this afternoon. The offer is still plastered on the entry billboards and at the display phones. Sales rep was great and had no hassles ordering the phone which will take a couple of weeks to arrive.

Having said that, because HN removed all mention on the website only this morning it wouldn't surprise me if the offer disappears tomorrow once the stores get their overnight instructions.

And as mentioned, the payout is the same (1/2 remaining payments). But TBH the plan is really very good once the phone is taken into account.

  • Pre-ordered on Monday from HN. Just called them today to see where the phone is. Apparently all the ones that arrived yesterday were already allocated. Big shortage of Pixels Australia wide apparently. Next shipment is 2-3 weeks away. Ordered an Obsidian 256gb, located Brisbane.

    • +1

Not sure where you are in Brisbane, but I walked into the Rothwell store (near Redcliffe) yesterday without a pre-order and got one, and the guy said they had loads of stock, if you're keen on picking one up sooner. :)

      • +1

South side, Mt Gravatt. Also a short drive to Carindale, and Loganholme isn't too far away. But they said I have to pick it up from the store I signed up at :(

        • Give Fortitude Valley HN store a call and see if Moses is free…. His a legend with his customer service in that store.

          • +3

@Chippps: Moses, is he alive? :)

            • +2

@localhost: haha he has re-spawned and joined the Hardly Normal team.

Honestly, he was an absolute legend on the customer service front. Went into the store. He told me about the deal without me even asking. Sign-up was done in 10 mins. Said to me "Sounds like you don't drop your phone much. Don't worry about any extra cover". We'll give you a call when it comes in.

Walked in there yesterday… Had been a week since he had seen me and he instantly knew my name and went & got the phone. Showed me the cases and said the options are a bit boring but we get more next week. Pop in and see me, otherwise enjoy the phone.

LOL, 128GB P8P's already hitting sub $1100 prices on Gumtree, meaning they aren't selling. Get rekt nerds

    • Try and buy one of those listings and let us know how it goes :)

      • I have my phone, signed up last week when the deal hit, also not cancelling the contract as I needed a new sim for my car

    • +2

Dunno why you're getting downvoted. Hope those scalpers get stuck with them!

  • Can anyone who has got their pixel 8 or 8pro comment on the call quality?

    • I can hear the other person. they can hear me

    • +1

On the Marques Brownlee review he commented that the call quality was really good.

    • One reviewer said it was the best quality he'd heard on the phone, but really they're much of a muchness in my experience

    • much brighter on the p8 pro than on my p5

  • so I just got the phone and decided to cancel my plan today. Chat with optus and I was repeatedly asking them to see if they can provide me some discount or better rates/ lower plan on the same contract, but all they wanted to recommend was to get off the contract lol.

Even to the termination team, I did clearly mention that if you were to give some discount on this plan, I am happy to stay but seems they didn't have anything better to offer, hence I cancelled. Incredible phone under 930$(256GB), back to amay sim prepaid. Glad I didn't port my number.

    • +1

If you had ported your number would you lose it when you cancelled the plan? I'm going to do a similar thing but I want to keep my current phone number in the end.

      • In that case, you should buy a sim card from a different provider and simply port out from optus.

        • Ok so 'cancelling' and 'porting out' are functionally the same in terms of ending the Optus plan and copping the $828 fee? But by porting out I can keep my number?

          • @Nolanb134: Porting in = You have existing number and are moving that number into a new service provider

Porting out = You currently have a number with a service provider and want to move that number out to a different service provider

Cancelling = shredding your current service without doing anything else i.e. If you have a number and don't port out and shred the service you lose the number obviously

Figure out which one works best or is most convenient for you. Porting numbers over normally takes a day.

  • -1

Should I do this with a new number or use my old number if I plan to cancel immediately? I'm on Telstra at the moment and I want to set up this Optus plan and then cancel it, and then move my number to a Belong sim or something. Is it ok if I do all this without setting up a new number? Or does cancelling the Optus plan get rid of the phone number?

    • +3

Welcome to an 8 day old post. feel free to read the 20 pages of comments and questions. this question has been asked a bazillion times.

      • +1

Yeah I've been through about 6 of the pages so far and cant find the answer.

        • -2

Welcome to OzBargain, where some people just can't bother to be helpful.

Yes, you can do that. I recommend starting a plan with Belong first and porting though. It'll cancel immediately on Optus' end and no having to deal with them begging you to stay.

          • @dongltron: Ok great thanks :) I have a slight issue with that which is that I have just rolled over into a new month on my current Telstra plan so I think Id rather see that out for another 3 weeks or so since I've already paid for it. So it seems like it might be easier to just set this whole thing up with a new number and then cancel it…?

            • @Nolanb134: If they let you. A number of people are reporting their HN is only letting them do ports. Luck of the draw really.

    • If you plan to cancel the plan immediately, why would you want your primary phone number to be ported over to it?

      • It just seems like it might be easier to port my number to Optus and then port it again to Belong… But I've never ported a number before (or cancelled a plan like this) so I dont know how it works or which is the easier way to do it.

        • Personally I would keep the transactions separate:
          1) get this on a new number, then cancel it when you are ready (either immediately in the car park if you want to risk it to save the 1st months $69, or once you have the phone in hand, but you will be liable for the first months $69 in this case). When you cancel, the new number will be lost.
          2) whenever you want, port you existing number to wherever.

          • @hoosier daddy: Trying to port out to avoid Optus live chat, but all the $2 sims seem to require you to choose and pay for a pre-paid plan in the process. any idea of how to just port the number without needing to buy credit?

            • +1

@Benjamin7711: I bought $2 Voda sim and tried doing online with $10 option, didnt let me activate. Then I chated with VODA rep online and he activated the sim by taking all the details required Like DL ,address etc and I didnt have to add any recharge voucher. Good Luck.

            • +1

@Benjamin7711: It might work with a Telstra SIM? I've asked the same question before and @jv assured me that you don't need to add any credit to activate a Telstra SIM.

              • @dazweeja: Thanks for that, I've been going in circles on Optus live chat for more than 2 hours and I haven't even made progress. Keep getting passed around to different teams and waiting 30-45 mins!
Telstra port sounds like a great option

          • @hoosier daddy: Is the 2nd step a must? Can't I just use my current SIM card/number?

            • @DealHunterBD: my example of what to do, was tailored for Noland's situation. everyone has different situations and requirements. do your own research, read the 20 pages of comments, make up your own mind

          • @hoosier daddy: Ok great thanks a lot that very helpful.
Regarding the 'risk' I dont see how that could possibly be an issue. If I pay the cancellation fee of 828 then surely they have to send me the phone still? I've paid for it? Is this an issue that other people have experienced? I think I'd rather pay the $69 if its something that has been happening to people but it doesnt seem likely to me…?

            • -1

@Nolanb134: The risk is low, and I don't think anyone has had issues (to date), but I am risk averse, and if I were doing this (which I'm not because I kept the number for use elsewhere), I would have rather waited till I had stock in hand, and I would have gladly paid the $34.50 as an "insurance" policy.

Who knows what Optus/HN do on the T's and C's of these things, for all we know, they changed them overnight and there's now fine print (no one has bothered to re-read) that says, "cancel before receiving phone, no phone" or something along those lines.

Everyone assumes the T's and C's are locked in place, from a week ago, but things can change. They could issue a subtle variant of the exact same deal that locks you in more than the $828…

Everyone should be doing their own research anyway, if you are solely relying on advice from strangers on OzBargain, well, good luck to you!

          • @hoosier daddy: Hey mate I’m planning to port out to Aldimobile after getting the 256gb in a few weeks time. I believe I don’t need to contact Optus just punch in the Optus number and port over to Aldi and it should automatically cancel the service in Optus meaning terminate the phone plan and pay penalties right?

        • +1

If you've never ported a number before, cancelled a plan, or don't know how it works or which way is easier to do it, then what makes you feel like it 'might be easier' to port the number over?

          • @rekke: Idk just a guess or a vibe thing I suppose. But thats why I'm asking, because I dont know.

    • +1

in light of some new comments in the last 10 mins, I would not do this if I were you. Seems the cancellation fee is now the full remaining contractual amount

      • +1

        Noooooo

        • in light of some more new comments, this might still be doable. best to ask questions and make sure about the cancellation fees

  • Anyone know if you use ABN business ACC it's the same contract and etc as the personal?

  • when does the cancellation appear on the bill? a month from now? just wanna pay now and get it out the way

  • +4

Went to a store in sydney today and they said it changed to 1659* cancellation fee after ozbargain blew it up. Apparently changed last night.

    • +2

well, good luck selling anything then :)

      • +2

It's still a good deal if you keep the plan, I am

        • I'll tell you why its not a good deal:
          1. Phone itself is not worth $1700. Mediocre hardware with google software. Same software (like gcam) will be available for other android phones with better HW in a month.
          2. Plan for 24 months - $69 per month? Really? If it's $49/m for 2 years I can bite the bullet and purchase it. Otherwise it's one of mediocre plans without extras (like international calls).

As you can see both phone is sold for 'free', hence it's not worth that much and simple chat with Optus agent can reduce plan by $10 or $20 - which means both are overpriced.

          • @localhost: No phone is worth $1700. Phones are expensive, that's the way it is. I personally currently own a Pixel 7 Pro and it's the best phone experience I've ever had. Easy to root, very nice exclusive features (ones that remain exclusive, they are able to exist because of the chip only found in Pixels), fastest Android version support. Plenty of reasons to like Pixels.

          • +2

@localhost: What's the phone worth? If you're cancelling and keeping the phone you obviously think the phone is worrth $828.
So if you keep the plan, you're paying a further $828 over 24 months for a 100GB 5G plan, which is $34.50/month. Sounds pretty good to me.

I also got a $10/month discount for 6 months, so I'm effectively paying $24.50/month for a 100GB 5G phone plan for at least 6 months

            • +2

@chromium: I think $800-900 is normal price for this phone. People won't spend almost $2k for pixel pro when they buy iPhone Pro.
Also regarding the plan - $30-40 is ok for basic plan, I don't know why 5G increases that much plans.

Overall it's a good deal, but can be better… that's my opinion.

              • +1

@localhost: I wouldn't pay $69 for the plan on its own, it's not worth it, but if you subtract the cost of the phone then it's a very good price for the plan. Find me a $34.50 100GB phone plan with full speed 5G anywhere else :)

If your current plan is more than $34.50 then it's cheaper to keep Optus

              • +2

@localhost: i'm confused, one moment you are like, " I'll tell you why its not a good deal ", and then 15 mins later when someone calls you up on your (flawed) logic, and you are like " Overall it's a good deal, … "

                • @hoosier daddy: For some people it's a deal, for me… nah.
                  Hence overall it's a good deal :)

              • @localhost: Agree. I have a Pixel 6a and can't see how anyone could possibly justify the price of a flagship Pixel. As you have stated, this is all the phone is worth and what we will see it sell for around this time next year. At least Apple holds some value.

          • @localhost: Yes I its overpriced. The phone at most worth 1k nothing more.

Since the deal is no longer valid I won't bother going to HN then

      • I purchased because I need a phone, my p6 died last week :) I don't intend to cancel but as an FYI for everyone

        • Next in line: iPhone 15 Pro Max 256GB Device Offer on $99
          Cancellation fee is $1188 :)

Oh, this was until 10th of October.

        • I suppose they signed people up with a new plan ID. Just out of curiosity, what does yours say in the optus app? The ones from a week ago should be the $69 Gift Card Voice Plan (36766014) with a max cancellation fee of $828 on the downloadable PDF. Thanks!

    • +1

      Oh boy.

    • Damn missed out

    • +4

They're bsing you - just signed up up at a store in Brisbane 2.5 hours ago, salesman specifically highlighted the $828 cancellation fee in the contract I signed while going through everything. Still have my customer copy of it that says the same thing.

    • +4

Fairly certain they are making crap up, signed up an hour ago, contract still is 828 max cancellation, optus app confirms the same. Contract and terms on the website are still the same :)

Obviously people should double check in case there is a bit of a lag in implementation.

    • What does the actual CIS for the plan state?

There are two numbers -one is the maximum cancellation cost which is $828, the other is the minimum total cost (if you stay on the plan for 24mths) of $1656

    • Update, the salesperson lied, the online chat person allowed 828 + first month as well as a 15% discount alternative.

      • They're clearly trying to deter people from breaking the contract. I don't see how that affects the salesperson though.

    • I don't think this has happened. I picked up this arvo and the support rep confirmed $824 cancellation fee.

  • I just saw this new promotion on HN. Is this separate from current campaign?
    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/brands/optus-mobile-data-pla…

    Receive a

    $500 Harvey Norman e-Gift Card

when you connect to a new OPTUS $69/mth

SIM Only plan for 24 months.

    • Yeah, separate. They had a signs up for that next to the signs for the Pixel 8 Pro deal at my local HN

    • +1

Wow what a downgrade… from $1699 pixel 8 pro 128gb to $500 HN egift card.

      • The deal has always been running alongside the Pixel one. No idea who would take it up though :D

  • +6

I can confirm that the deal is still working despite being removed from their website. I purchased from HN Maribyrnong today at 12pm and cancelled the service by 1:30pm for a $828 cancellation fee. They couldn't waive the first month $69 fee because it hadn't been charged yet, but they left a note on my account to refund it if I call back after the first bill.

There were no security gaurds threatening ozbargainers, no waiver requested to be signed, and the CIS has not been changed (still stated $828 cancellation fee). The sales person was very nice about it all and didn't ask if I was planning to cancel. The Optus staff was confused, but didn't really care either. There is no guarentee that your experience would be the same, but this was my experience.

    • What did you say when you are ordering the phone please ? Do they give you the t&c prior ?

      • I just ordered too. You talk to them like you a normal purchase and you don't mention anything of cancelling. You get all the usual Ts and Cs.

      • Just that I wanted a new phone, and that this sounded like a good deal. It was just like any ordinary phone purchase. They did ask where I heard about the deal but I just said "from a friend".

They will give you a contract to sign which includes the Critical Information Summary (CIS). That is where you will find the maximum cancellation charges.

    • really? Thanks I will go try signing up today perhaps, what if they change T&C later on the fee.

      • +1

I think the T&C you sign are the T&C that will apply. They can't change what you agreed to (but can change what is offered to future customers). I'm planning to go in today as well. Just make sure to read the cancellation fee carefully.

  • Any advice on how data transfer works from my old P30 Pro I've had for 3+ years until it finally died (RIP best phone ever).

Wouldn't have a clue how data and app transfers work these days.

What I want to do is a clean install so it's from scratch, and only transfer over data that I want to transfer from certain apps.

    What's the best way?
I've got GoogleOne – 2TB with auto backup and restore activated on the P30 Pro. But not sure if I should deactivate/delete it or change a setting so it doesn't all transfer across automatically.

    Any tips?

    • Not sure why the negs, but whatever.

Yeah if you had autobackup on the phone you're all good provided you log in with the same Google account when you begin the setup process of the phone. You can select what transfers over for the most part, including apps.

      • Absolute legend… Thank you.

        • Just be aware that some apps don't transfer well. I had some that worked flawlessly but some that didn't.

          • @CheapCoffee: That's why I want to be very selective about what I want to transfer over. I don't want to be dealing with frustrating apps not transferring properly

  • +5

Just got back from Harvey Norman. Deal is still ongoing. No stock so will wait a few weeks till it arrives. Max plan cancellation fee of $828.

    • Yeah the CIS for the 'gift card voice plans' (which is the one given in this deal) still states $828 as the cancellation fee. The doc is accessible via the HN website right now

      https://hndgwww2.blob.core.windows.net/hnau/gift_card_voice_…

    • -1

The problem is if the T&C for cancellation fee changes while you are waiting the phone to arrive, then by the time you got the phone and cancel the contract. the T&C already updated then you would be paying the big price?

      • +1

Not your problem if it isn't in the contract you signed.

  • I just had Optus suspend my plan for a month while I wait for my white 256.
Managed to get them to waive the $5.50 fee

    • Was that with a new number or a port in?

      • +1

        New number.

    • Did they have a way of confirming you didn't have the phone or did you just tell them it hasn't arrived?

      • Just said that it didn't arrive. They tried the $5.50 thing but I said your agent should pay that for not supplying the phone.

        • haha good call

  • +2

For those who cancelled Optus plan on the next day or so - any luck in getting 1st month bill waived or reduced on pro-rata basis? TIA.

    • I was told no charge for 1st month, but still keeping my fingers crossed as it's from billing department, not the customer service who cancelled my service.

PS. On my first call they told me there will be $69 billed to the 1st month. I tried again with different person and was told no charge.

    • +1

Just got my cancellation phone bill from Optus. $802.70 due in 2 weeks time. YMMV
I cancelled by porting out as I was getting the run around when trying to cancel via optus chat within 24 hours of ordering.

      • so you just ported out within two hours to a telstra network operator?
