    So spend $20 and get a $20 gift card……….

    BARGAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Actually one of the main barriers to me gifting these types of cards for special occasions to friends/customers etc is the fee which is sometimes as high as $5.95 IIRC.
So until now I've just been relying on Prezee Swap cards which dont have a fee to buy/swap to a card the recipient wants. I will say the Prezee interface is a lot nicer and presents well/ some options for further customisation including recording a video for the recipient or using a personalised photo for the card for that trademark Jimothy sparkle.

Serious question here, but wouldn't it be easier just to transfer money to their bank account or just gift them cash? This all feels like too much work with increased risk and hassle (e.g., needing to use every cent of the card). Is there something I'm missing here?

        • +5

          Easier/ safer sure

But this at least is a bit more personal.

For clients, they go ah yes I got this gift card from that guy that now I’m obligated to use, oh hey I wonder if he has xyz item in stock or can look at quoting this project for me. I have one client that I know is a massive simpsons fan like myself so my cards to him are always with simpsons reference in them. Can’t do that with a cash transfer 🤷🏻‍♂️

        • +5

It’s for people who need to hit a minimum spend on their credit card to get bonus points

      • Cash

    • How? I don't see that $20

how does digital eftpos work - can you use eftpos cards online?

    • Note: This is instore use only where Prepaid eftpos is accepted.

    • +3

No. You add these cards to your Apple Pay or Google Pay and then tap your device when paying in-person.

      • I thought tap is always credit transaction?

        • Probably still MasterCard inside, covered by EFTPOS.

        • Nope, contactless eftpos is a thing

        • +6

          Nope.

Tap/contactless is the way you interact with an EFTPOS terminal (much like swipe or insert). Historically, contactless has been associated with credit payments, because contactless payments was available for Visa and Mastercard a number of years before it was available for eftpos. It therefore made sense to have the default for contactless payments to be credit. However:

          • There are more and more merchants choosing to do Least Cost Routing (where the contactless payment from a physical dual-network card is routed through the payment network with the lowest fees) or Merchant Choice Routing (where the contactless payment from a physical dual-network card is routed through the payment network chosen by the merchant). For example, Coles has implemented LCR for a number of years now for contactless from physical Visa/eftpos debit cards. Additionally, ALDI appears to have either LCR or MCR switched on for contactless from Mastercard/eftpos debit cards, as my mate bought something from ALDI earlier today, tapped his Commonwealth Bank Debit Mastercard and the payment was routed through eftpos instead of Mastercard.

          • Many dual-network debit cards support eftpos and Visa/Mastercard when added to a supported mobile wallet (e.g. Apple Pay). That means you can choose on your device the payment network you route your payment through before you do a contactless payment on the EFTPOS terminal.

          • Physical Commonwealth Bank KeyCards (eftpos-only debit cards) has been supporting contactless payments for a number of years now.

          • @WookieMonster: I'm still scared that by buying and keeping this digital card, we might run into the occasional shop that displays the EFTPOS logo but their terminal maybe not configured in such way that the tap is appropriately detected as an EFTPOS card and routed as an EFTPOS transaction through that network.

I'm pleased to know the CommBank Debit MC tap now goes through LCR/MCR. As a workaround, I used to insert my CommBank card into the terminal and select EFTPOS option as it otherwise used to default to credit [hence my concern above]. I've previously had my Westpac card (with EFTPOS printed on the back, and yes with sufficient funds) decline in ALDI as well under EFTPOS but be successful under Credit (i.e. MasterCard) selection albeit with the additional fee.

      • I just tried to add to Google pay. Doesn't seem to be able to add it. Is it just an apple pay thing? Or does it not work with EFTPOS prepaid and only master/visa types? Cheers

      • Anyone can confirm it works with Android? Does it allow you enter the card info not in 3 pieces of info?

I don't think it works with Android yet. When you choose add a payment card, it only allows credit or debit at the moment. Don't buy it if you do not have Apple Pay, which should be mentioned in the deal really.

        • +1

Just bought one and added it to my Google wallet. You need to download the TCN app and add the card through the App to Google Wallet.

          • @Happybird: Yes, I just did the same for a small value card (as a test) and was going to update my experience. You are right. It can be only added via TCN App.

For TCN VISA/MC, you can load it to Google Wallet by 3 pieces of info, but not this digital EFTPOS.

      • So this physical card can’t just be physically used without being added to Apple Pay or google pay? So inconvenient!

    Prepaid coles mastercard doesn't work

    • +2

I'm amaze how do yo keep coles mc gc safe for quite long time haha

    • +1

Using a prepaid cash giftcard.. to buy a prepaid cash giftcard.. Is this some kind of 4d Chess?

      • +3

Coles Mastercard Gift Cards are notoriously insecure. This would allow you to convert it out for additional safety and since they can't be spent online your risk of being hacked is negligible.
Since these are EFTPOS cards I'm guessing you also won't pay a MC/Visa surcharge using them at somewhere like Aldi so you can get the full value of the card without CC surcharges.

    • +1

Did you try using the card via PayPal?

      • Will try that

  • +3

Good deal for using AmEx or other points earning credit card at locations where you would normally incur a credit card surcharge or for hitting minimum spends on a bonus point credit card offer.

  • There is a purchasing fee when purchasing, on top of the purchase price?

    • I just bought one to test and there were absolutely no fees.

  • Also bought one to test, was curious to see if worked to pay things online via Apple Pay. Doesn’t work, so it is really an in-store only card.

  • Desperate attempt by EFTPOS to stay relevant in the digital age.

    • +1

      No that would be Beem.

  • +1

Bought 2x $250 with Vanilla Visa cards directly through the ShopPay checkout.

    • What difference does that make?

      • Vanilla Visa cards can't be loaded onto mobile wallets so they don't have tap and go. They are also signature verified so you might run into problems using them at some places.

Lastly, the EFTPOS cards aren't charged a MC/Visa surcharge so I'm going to keep these for use at Aldi.

  • +5

Swap your Coles Digital Mastercard to come shop at Aldi hehe

    • No, it is better to buy SB supermarket Activ VISA.

      • More aimed at AMEX and American Express users

  • -2

Oh can you add eftpos cards to apple or google pay in store at australia post?

Am curious as i have a bunch of perfect eftpos (variable ones from woolworths)

  • Does Costco take efpos?

    • It says in their payments allowed web page that debit cards are allowed in store so that would be EFTPOS. Debit cards use the EFTPOS system when you select the savings option so they have to support EFTPOS there.

      https://www.costco.com.au/member-care/shopping-at-costco/wha…

It mentions Apple Pay. But if you've got an Android phone If you add it to Google Pay then it should also work.

  • If there's no discount, what is the point?

    • It's supposed to used as a gift to some one else instead of money.

    • +9

The main benefits (in my mind anyway) are:

      • If you have an American Express (AMEX) card, you can use it to purchase this gift card and then use the gift card at merchants who do not accept AMEX or to avoid a surcharge merchants charge for accepting AMEX. You should still earn points on your AMEX card for purchasing this gift card. For example, ALDI does not accept AMEX, but ALDI accepts eftpos cards (and do not levy their surcharge against payments routed through the eftpos network).

      • If you have a Visa/Mastercard card (especially a platinum/premium Visa/Mastercard credit card), you can use it to purchase at merchants to reduce or avoid a surcharge that you may have to pay for using Visa/Mastercard at a merchant. You should still earn points on your Visa/Mastercard card for purchasing this gift card. Again, ALDI is a good example.

      • If you have a Visa/Mastercard prepaid gift card (e.g. Coles Mastercard gift card, Vanilla Visa gift card), an added benefit is that you can convert them into a prepaid gift card that is not susceptible to fraudulent transactions in the same way as Visa/Mastercard prepaid gift cards are. Additionally, most Visa/Mastercard prepaid gift cards do not support contactless payments, so if you are like me and hate having to go through the hassle of swiping at a merchant (or are unable to swipe at a merchant, because they choose to only accept contactless payments), that is a benefit. Obviously, it only really makes sense to convert a Visa/Mastercard prepaid gift card into an eftpos prepaid gift card if the merchant you want to spend money at actually accepts eftpos prepaid gift cards as a payment method.

      • Purchasing these gift cards can help you reach any credit card spend requirements to earn a sign-up bonus… as long as the credit card issuer does not count Card.Gift (or its MCC of 5947) as an exclusion.

      • That gift card exclusion - is there a proper way to check this or do you just have to go through the pds looking for gift cards exclusions?

        • +2

The best thing to do is to check the terms and conditions of the applicable credit card rewards program and/or the credit card sign-up offer to see what is considered an excluded purchase (particularly what is considered a cash advance).

I will mention that Commonwealth Bank (and to a lesser extent, Bankwest) have a history of considering the purchase of gift cards as a cash advance, rather than a regular purchase. However, considering that Commonwealth Bank generally cannot see what you are purchasing, they would instead need to look at the merchant you are purchasing from to then determine whether your purchase should be treated as a cash advance. Here are two salient examples:

  • I have problem adding the card to my Apple Wallet, it sent me a SMS with a link and add the card through the TCN app, but it said I need to contact the card issuer when I click the "add to apple wallet" button.
I always have problem with the TCN app, and it takes them ages to reply my quires. Anyone know how to delete the cards with zero balance in the app? I can't even find the answer from TCN website nor contacting their customer service…

    • Re-logging into the app normally fixes that especially if you were logged into another user before.TCN doesn't delete zero balance cards even if expired and will still there indefinitely.

      • I did log out and login again, it is not the first time i have problem with the cards. CS always asked me to do that, but it doesn't work this time. I have bunches of restaurant giftcards in the app, some of them got the odd balance in there, i can only use up this little money at two of the shops that are willing to split the payment, while I can't just add all cards into apple wallet and wait until the day I go to those two shops as there are max. number of card in the wallet…anyway, it would be much appreciate if cards can be deleted in the app, this is a basic feature…

        • I think they should move to a "marked as used" or expired page. Prezzee allows you to remove cards but you have to email them to get it back for stuff like getting refunded and not. Seems like a bottleneck of prezzee and costly for a rep's wage to handle them.

    • I contacted them when I had a problem adding a gift card to Apple wallet and they cancelled it and issued me a new one. Try calling them for a quicker response.

      • I don't know they have a phone number, in the contact us page there is only form available

        • Yeah same issue here, can't add to Apple Pay. Tried calling them today and spent one hour waiting on the line, and no one bothered to pick up the phone.

          • @frostybite: Doesn’t work still. Called up TCN today. They issued another card. Same result. They told me to escalate it by reporting/emailing it.

            • @k1vnwng: Maybe you have overdone it (with the same personal info). I have seen your failure with Activ VISA, etc.

            • @k1vnwng: Maybe but I doubt it. I barely use TCN cards except a handful in my wallet and my last purchase of Pamper gift card added fine. Even when they issued a new card, it didn’t add. Oh well. I’ll either wait for support to respond or try to add it in a few days.

  • Do you guys know if we can use for ATO?

    • These aren't on the Visa/Mastercard network and cannot be used online so I don't expect them to work at the ATO.

  • How do you guys spend the last few dollars remaining on these digital cards? No online website take split payments.

    • +1

These gift cards cannot be used online. To spend any small remaining balances, just do split payments at Coles or Woolworths.

  • i bought one to test out, but I can't find the pin? i've added it into google wallets with the TCN app but I can see where the pin is displayed in the TCN app. Does anyone know if we do need to enter a pin?

    • Setting > Manage Pin and set one.

      • +1

Im not seeing the 'manage pin' option in the tcn app on android.
        Only
        'Help & Support'
        'Terms & Conditions'
        'Redeem another card'
        'Logout'

        Is it just me?

        • Manage Pin only appears when select other cards like Grocery giftcard.

I would say PIN does not require for any mount spent.

          • @Neoika: I called 1300 375 346 and was able to get the PIN number from them. They are now aware of the issue and are working on adding it into the app.
There is no other way, at least for android users, to get the PIN. You must call them to get the PIN until they update the app.

            • @googoogaga: I was never asked for PIN for any digital wallet payment in-store. Although I never did EFTPOS via it, I think probably not needed.

              • +1

@Neoika: I loaded one of these into Google Wallet via the TCN app and used it at Aldi today. No requirement for a PIN. I've never been asked for a PIN when paying via Google Wallet because I first have to unlock my phone with fingerprint/phone PIN to authorise the transaction.

                • +1

@daanish: If you attempt a refund transaction (even for a card on your mobile wallet where you authorise using biometrics or a phone passcode), you should be pretty much always asked for a PIN.

A while ago, I did a refund transaction of $6 at Coles, and when I tapped my debit card on Apple Pay (and chose eftpos as the payment network) and authorised the card on my phone using biometrics, the EFTPOS terminal asked for a PIN.

                  • @WookieMonster: Usually you can have the refund back to a debit card. Just do not use the card. Yes, I did it once or twice and it asked for PIN.

                • @daanish: I needed to use the PIN when I had paid around $200 odd at a restaurant that used a TYRO terminal. I tapped and it required me to enter pin, when I just pressed 'enter' without entering a pin, it didn't go through.
No idea why, but better to have the pin ready incase you do need it.

  • Is it possible to do Paypal Pay in 4 payment?

    • No. You can't use this card through the internet. This is only an EFTPOS card which uses the EFTPOS payment system which is in store only. Paypal has no connection to the EFTPOS system.

For Paypal you need a debit card or credit card.

  • +1

I ended up purchasing a $500 one for use in the next Coles MCGC promotion hopefully end of this month. It didn’t add to apple wallet yesterday.

Called and contacted TCN, who issued another card and said that if it didn’t add, to email with screenshot and it’ll be escalated.

It didn’t work. Email sent. Waiting for support to respond. Fingers crossed it’ll be quicker.

  • Can this be used to buy Gift cards at Woolies/Coles?
    Basically get ~17% discount

Use discounted 7.25% Visa card to buy eftpos GC and then use eftpos GC to buy 10% discounted HIM/HER GC at Woolies

    • I used one to buy a TCN Him card at Woolworths last week.
