$500 creative soundbar is a tough sell.

    • Agree, as a soundbar you can get Samsung or LG with a sub and much more powerful at this price. If you don't need the form factor, Edifier s350db gets you a far better sounding system for $350-400.

Why in the name of all things audio would someone bother to bi-amp a soundbar?

Sound Blaster Katana SE features our bi-amplification system… This allows the one-piece soundbar to deliver distortion-free audio with clarity and loudness even without a subwoofer!

The marketing schtick on this is nuts. Bi-amping means… you don't need a subwoofer to turn up volume?

    • In this case the dual amps means you can have different crossover frequencies and slopes for each pair of speakers. So you would have lower frequencies for the two 4.3" drivers, and higher frequencies going to the tweeters.

How well that would be implemented, I have no idea.

      • So you would have lower frequencies for the two 4.3" drivers, and higher frequencies going to the tweeters.

Unless I am missing something, how does using two amps achieve this in a better fashion versus just the standard crossover arrangement that splits signal from a single amp between tweeter and woofer pairs?

This way you can have a high and low pass filters for each speaker pair. Cheap speakers would just put a capacitor on the tweeter to act as a filter. Which could work if the DAC in the soundbar already filters out frequencies that it doesn't want the speakers to play, but proper crossovers would be better.

          • @AdosHouse: Any idea on how common (cheap) DACs are that can output dual signals that can be directed to two amps? I've only come across this idea as a discrete DSP stage after the DAC but this is in hifi-land.

I would have thought that a handful of cheap components for a crossover would be easier and cheaper to arrange.

Though either way, I can't imagine it making much of a difference with a soundbar. One day I'd like to try out a 'high end' soundbar and hear if there's really any techno-wizardry that can wring good sound out of a load of tiny speakers sitting directly on top of TV cabinet.

Gosh why is this priced around $500 with no sub🤦

    • To be fair, it does have a couple of 4" drivers in the main body. Given that soundbars in this price range with 'subwoofers' (and I use that term generously) don't even bother to give the specs of the supposed 'sub' I wouldn't hold that against the Creative.

  • I have the Katana V2X and I can only give it the most glowing of reviews.

I'm not going to downvote this post because it is a deal on this particular product. The V2X (which comes with a slim subwoofer) delivers a more robust base and is cheaper.

EDIT: Found an outstanding deal for the V2X
