      • These articles are funny.
I mean, they're not really written from a genuine human to human interest in creating good lives/living/working conditions etc.

It's basically big corporates saying "we set the bar [so damn low that if you squint real hard you'll just be able to call it liveable while we still rake in megaprofits - ya] and then, AND THEN! someone had the AUDACITY to go below the bar we set!!!!"

        • +7

Even if you ignore the human rights side of things, there's still the fact that the parent company of temu (PDD) got their app taken off the play store because of malware. And temus app allegedly has some aspects of the "bad" parts of the PDD app. https://grizzlyreports.com/we-believe-pdd-is-a-dying-fraudul…

        • +4

I always find this argument to be based on some level of self-denial. You recognise that there is something wrong, but seek to blame someone else instead.

I'm not going to lecture anyone about whether they should be buying from here or not (and I myself am likely to do so with this deal as well), but "other companies aren't as bad as them, but aren't much better so this is OK" isn't really a good argument.

          • @callum9999: Well yeah.

Which of course isn't my argument. It's the argument whoever sponsored the nytimes article was making. Which I'm critiquing.

            • @nzcoops: Ah sorry, I think I misinterpreted your post. I read it as if you were saying "bad is bad" so it doesn't matter whether you use a "bad" company or a "terrible" company.

              • @callum9999: All good.

If I were to summarise the article it would be "agenda'd US media outlet uses shitty US companies [barely only just passing the sniff test] as "cheated do gooding strawmen" in whinge about how Chinese company is beating them at their own game [consisting of BS arbitrary rules that those companies probably lobbied for for their exclusive benefit]".

But I buy from all these companies like anyone else, so perhaps that's all just a commentary on my life.

                • @nzcoops: I do the same - my view of this is that as long as you acknowledge your own behaviour (i.e. say "this is how we should all be" as opposed to "you're all terrible"!) it's perfectly fine to highlight moral issues like this.

You'd have to view yourself as perfection incarnate otherwise! (I say jokingly, knowing too many people do…)

I have, then promptly uninstalled the app. The amount of notifications and snooping they do on your phone is ridiculous.

Fortunate for me i also did my 1 and only transaction with them using a card that was about to expire.

    • Yes

    • everyone that said yes, do you guys use the app or just order via the website? what payment method did you use? I really want to use it but hearing stories about people getting their bank account/facebook accounts hacked.

Curious if these people also use the same password for all their accounts, and if this may be the problem.

      • Bought from them twice, one right after the first transaction. From website with paypal, I would not stick my credit card details there. I could not make it forget my paypal account either, I could not find in the account settings to remove payment methods.
First transaction was just over $30, then was given a bunch of coupons, 2nd purchase first coupon was spend $50 and get $20 off.
So I did spend $60, everything ordered was as advertised and got delivered less than 10 days.
But the second transaction, some items was more impulse buying but hey, it was almost 1/2 price with coupon. I do feel the prices was really cheap though.
Would I buy again, maybe. The pop up ads really make it feel dodgy, they also play with your FOMO. Time left for free shipping…. Only 1 left…. Just wait till the shipping is free again.

        • I've never received any coupons 😐

          • +1

@reactor-au: If there is no rush, just save what you want to your cart.
Free shipping and bonus coupon offers seem to come up for me all the time.
I just went to the site and a pop offered me a $250 coupon bundle if make a $29 order. No details on the bundle though, the coupons expire quickly so needs to be used really soon. Example of a coupon, spend $50, get $20 off, the next coupons were less value/discount. Today it is saying minimum $15 order for free shipping, the first time I tried to buy was $30 which I passed.
            Totally random.

Some guy on reddit told me temu is a scam.

    He never elaborated.

    • +13

      Was his handle Bezos?

    • +23

Temu isn't a scam but it is dodgy. I would recommend purchasing through web rather than app. Temu loses around $50 per transaction but their app has complete access to your phone and they take all the data stored in there. There is hidden code that was discovered recently. Pinduoduo which recently were caught doing this and got shutdown… well their 100 developers are now at Temu. Ultimately, Temu isn't an e-commerce platform but a huge data hoarding company designed to catch up to the likes of google when it comes to data scrapping for China to catch up and surpass in A.I. development.

      • I do agree with you - I am definitely sure they are collecting data from all users - but I do think complete access to phone is an over exaggeration, Wouldn't it be very difficult or simply impossible for an app to access your messages etc. (if it did, the app would be taken day already if Apple/Android are doing their job right)

Other than identity theft and potentially hacking into other accounts (I don't know if that is possible), I don't find any serious concern in the other data they collect (email, maybe phone number if you used one, screen time etc.) - spam maybe? but wouldn't someone have caught on that already? Maybe they are planning to do everything later on as Temu gains traction and more data?

About the $50 loss per transaction, that intrigues me and I want to look further into it, do you have the source of it? (Btw, not doubting you but I want to look at it rationally)

        • +2

A report was released recently, revealed that Temu contained hidden functions that allowed for access of almost all data on customers devices and Temu was intentionally trying to hide the intrusiveness of their app. Could be propaganda, could just be a conspiracy, could be short sellers but they definitely are making huge losses currently. It's clear they aren't trying to get you to buy things but to get as many users to download the app as possible… to probably sell, which is where the profit would be.

          • @ShinK0: All right I see, they are indeed suspcious given their past history, time will tell. They do have another version of Temu only to be used in China, I wonder if that Temu version has even more privacy concerns as China is not as vigorous in protecting privacy

          • @ShinK0: Where can I find this report?

      • I was surprised as hell to see that Temu login persists between Safari Private window tabs. No other site managed to pull this off so far.

        • +1

I think any login persists between private window tabs if both are opened simultaneously. If you close it and then try opening a new private window, the login shouldn't work.

          • @keepsmiling: Nope. I login in eBay in one tab, open eBay in new tab and im not logged in in the new tab. Thats how in works in Safari Private Browsing, which I use as default.

      • +2

Thanks for reminding me to uninstall the app, I'm sure they've scraped me cleaner than cervical check by now, but better late than never I suppose

      • Maybe first version (or whatever version that was banned). Just checked and the Temu on my phone has NO permissions. If it was ongoing, Google would of banned them from the Play Store.

        • There has been no versions that have been banned. If you mean Pinduoduo, which is the sister company, Google suspended them after versions outside Google Play store were found to contain malware. I do not know for certain if Temu app, downloaded from Google Play store has any malware or hidden functions outside of what I'm reading from Western media. However, what I can say as someone that works with Google and Apple app stores for the last 8 years, your permissions aren't stopping things that are hidden and each app update that is sent for review, is reviewed by people allowing for many errors to slip through, especially if you submit an update followed by a revised update to fix 'bugs'.

Logically, you are right though. With this much heat on Temu, Google would have rechecked to see if there is anything before allowing Temu to tarnish their credibility further.

    • The temu app has the same devs that were embedding malware into another app that got remove from the App/Play store.

Heaps of reports of temu app gathering way more data than it needs and sending it all straight to China.

You share a video sponsored by the competitor Shien lol

  • Good rate. They can be cheaper than AliExpress, but it looks like they stock mostly generic stuff.

I have a few pending transactions that are overdue, hopefully they sort that out.

  • +1

sweet, Temu is the place I buy some stuffs that don't need to be of good quality. Delivery is pretty fast.

  • +4

They are legit. Quality might vary but generally good. Best part is way faster than AliExpress.

They also do a lot of "games" involving purchase and referrals which I find a bit dodgy because the will say the stuff you're supposed to get is out of stock and make you choose something else that might not be what you want, let alone similar value. So don't bother.

    • Best part is way faster than AliExpress.

My recent AliExpress Orders has been pretty fast (arrived the following week), especially on "Choice Items".

      • Yep aliexpress upping their delivery game. Plus they have a much wider selection and reviews and reviews are more comprehensive if you need to decide

      • I still find Temu more frequently faster but Choice Items are indeed way faster than other items - though I had one choice item lost and other marked delivered at sorting centre and never arriving.

    • Way faster perhaps cause they force you spend a minimum of 20 dollars per order.
I admit some of their prices are cheaper than aliexpress but I find it annoying sometimes when I just want 1 item and it's under 20 dollars; have to find something else I "need" to order.

  • +12

Downvoting because my cashback never tracked. Lodged a missing cashback with SB, still pending after two weeks with no update whatsoever.

  • Strong suspicions have been raised that temu is using forced labour in china. Just google it.

    • lol is that new news to you ?

    • I hate when people use slaves! Anyone who got rich off slaves should return their wealth and their descendants should become slaves!

  • +8

temu + shopback = what could possibly go wrong (!)

"your transaction for order ID ********* was not tracked accurately which could be due to the following reasons:

You've clicked on another browser extension after clicking from ShopBack

Other web pages or browsers (including search sites, social media, store sites, promotional or discount sites) were opened after clicking from ShopBack

Clicking through to another page from a banner, pop-up or advertisement from the store's page.

Using Antivirus, Cleanup or Adblocker applications may also disrupt Cashback tracking as tracking cookies are required to accurately track your transactions.

To ensure your Cashback is tracked accurately, read up on "How to to earn Cashback" If you need any further assistance, you can reach us via live chat.

    Regards,
    Team ShopBack"

    • +4

Haven't once had Temu track on Shopback (I use a specific clean browser for cashback shopping and everything else tracks fine, whether through SB or others)

    • I won't be using Shopback again until they drop Temu. Is Cashrewards involved with them too? (Goes to check…) Damn, they're promoting them as well! I might cash out until Temu finally shows (the rest of) it's true colours to the world. You would think businesses value their reputation and customers. It's not like there's no honest businesses to partner with instead. That's really disappointing, CR.

    • +2

Scam, shows I clicked through on shopback but nothing tracked. Placed an order on AliExpress 5 minute later and it tracked shortly after.

Temu are not honoring cashbacks and shopback should drop them.

      • Well I confess the cashback tracked this morning, shock.

  • I did purchase from them few times, quality of products was cheap, plastic was visibly cheap too. Than I became aware of their dodgy app and I uninstalled the app.

    • Personally I'd be doing a factory reset, not just an uninstall.

      • Full phone factory reset? 😐

        • I don't understand enough about Android & iOS, but surely it must similar to PCs in that installing a program can also mean installing other things like keyloggers, trojans, etc which don't get removed when you uninstall the first program. So I would. I installed an app from Google Playstore that sat on my phone for 3+ years before Google finally removed it due to sus activity.

  • I have an account, but have never ordered. is that a 'new' account?

  • +7

Temu has a sister company that is literally a criminal enterprise. They pay everyone to use their service, pay money for fake reviews, spy on you, have notorious issues with credit card information being leaked after using them, rarely honour anything refund or return, send crap all over the world at huge climate cost so people can throw it in the bin and think to themselves… ah you get what you pay for, it was cheap anyway.

Don't be part of the problem.

    • Well 4 out of 5 ain't bad. (Climate change is a fairy story for adults.) ;-D

  • Any items on there cool right now or a deal?

Wife has an account, perhaps I can make one, get referral credit and cash back

  • +1

Wait I can't view items without creating an account?!

You know what I read the rest of the comments here, including broken USB ports on consoles and nah I'm good. Must be particularly bad.

    • I think they do that during period of heavy traffic to their website. Try again later.

  • +4

Used 4 times in the same day from them to get spent $XX to get $XX off, nothing that last a month except a chopping board that size in pic was normal but super small which normal size sold at bigW for $15 I bought from temu for $25
Compare the quality of Temus BigW sold items you can say are high end

  • +2

Sorry OP, negging because of PDD's history with malware and data harvesting on top of the human rights allegations.
    https://grizzlyreports.com/we-believe-pdd-is-a-dying-fraudul…

    • Damn! I'd be uninstalling their app AND doing a factory reset of my phone. (If I were uninformed or silly enough to still install it after all the warnings.)

I'm wondering how long before million$ of crytpo starts disappearing due to being installed on many of the same phones as peoples "authy" app.

  • +5

Shopback for temu never works and tracks for me

Ebay, Amazon etc, all successful, getting confirmation within minutes of purchase.

I even raised a shop back query on missing cash back and shopback is taking longer than usual.

But none of my temu items are ever successful, it's so sus.

    • If they steal customer's banking info to make fraudulent charges (and they do)… then being honest about cashback tracking isn't going to be high on their list of moral responsibilities either.

  • +1

Tried temu its a scam app, lots of fake prizes you can never ever win.

  • +2

Temu is incredibly dodgy. Fake roulet/spin wheel prizes, spyware on your phone, human rights issues. List just keeps growing.

    • How dodgy can they be if they can afford a Superbowl ad?

      • So having the money for an advert makes them great humanitarians? The answer is: "Very."

        • Not just any ad, it was created by Saatchi & Saatchi who are regarded as one of the top ad agencies.

          • @Mr Bob Dobalina: LOL. So what. The Nazis used IBM. Doctors leave medical instruments inside patients. There was a headache powder back in the 1970s called "Vincents" that caused kidney damage. And million/billionaires do corrupt/evil crap all the time. Having $$$ or even a "high value qualification" doesn't make you some pious saint. (Especially if you're a communist ruled over by a communist government.)

            • @[Deactivated]: All I'm saying is that the majority of "dodgy" companies can't afford superbowl ads, and the majority of companies advertising on the superbowl are not dodgy.

  • +5

Temu + Shopback is a fail. All their previous 20-30% cashback never tracked for me.

  • +1

Never had a problem. Bought hundreds of $$ worth of stuff, always came faster than aliexpress.
There's also no need to use shopback as there is a way to basically get 60% off every single order with their coupon system (if you know how to use it).

To the people saying they track you. ok, are you aware that by installing Chrome browser, Google opens a port via e100.net to log every single site you visit? When you firewall that off, Google will bypass it via numeric IP. In a nutshell by having any Google app on your Windows/Android, Google logs and knows every website/IP you visit.
People willingly PAY to invite big brother Amazon and Google in their homes (Android phones, smartwatches, home smart devices, doorbells) but scared of buying from a Chinese retailer. Makes sense, but then again, it's just normal human behavior. Every major new thing: skeptical > adoption. Same thing happening with EVs now.

    • By using a new account + referral?

    • it depends, some new accounts get 20 dollars off some get %50 off after 100 spent, i tried with a new account and i could not get any to work recently

    • -2

There is a difference though. Google (or it's employees) don't steal people's banking info to make fraudulent charges. While I'm sure they'd like to, western law would put them in gaol. The CCP otoh has no such restraint. Banks may drag back or just refund out of good will, these fraudulent charges today. But what happens when China decides to go to war against someone and at 2:00AM the CCP rocks up to Temu with a script demanding they do a mass withdrawal of as many bank accounts as possible before the western world gets out of bed.

      • Or push an app update at 2am with a backdoor (if the current one doesn't already have one), that logs your keystrokes, accesses your authy crypto login app (or whatever), and "all you bases belong to us"… I'll pass.

        • When an app requires additional permissions, it will prompt you to grant them. It's up to the user to manually approve or deny these permissions. If you have doubts about this, it suggests that you believe Android and iOS is compromised? If so, probably should just use those old Nokia's :P

          • @noshopping: Most people don't know what they're saying yes to anyway, and apps can be easily coded to not even open until you first grant those permissions, which drives people to just say yes to everything. There's a link someone provided in this thread. Part of the info shows all the insecure permissions, talks about code they cut & pasted from some other dodgy/thieving app, and that's only what I glanced at. If people don't won't even look at that, let alone heed its warning, kid themselves all the people talking about fraudulent bank charges are just "competitors trying to ruin their business…" then have at it. I'm not risking losing my crypto investment, fraudulent bank charges, ID theft, keystrokes being logged, email hijacked so they can then gain access to dozens of online accounts including banks, ATO, etc. It's just not worth the risk for some Chinese made junk I can find on a half dozen other sites.
