hoping for another 2 for $19 deal on the amazon deal day in october

    • Do they have 2 for 19 before?

    • Great for the US three letter agencies to spy on you. That being said my Hikvision video goes straight to CCP! Winning!

I read that aloud. Siri laughed along with me.

These are so heavily subsidised by Amazon that they are a pretty great buy. Especially if you get more than one, and link them to your spotify for a dirt cheap Sonos system around the house.
Plus they have a line-out, so you can turn any old stereo into smart speakers

    • -4

Line-out is mono only according to AI.

      • +3

"On its own the Dot is a mono device. However it does have a 3.5mm stereo jack which you can use to connect it to your audio system. "

        • +1

          Correct you are.

    • These are so heavily subsidised

Follow the money is a saying that tends to be….right on the money.
If they're going cheap because they want you to have them….ask yourself why.

Unless i could literally disable the microphone manually, i don't want the little spy device.

  • With 4 far-field microphones, AlexaBezos can hear you from across the room.

Weren’t these $10 at one point? Pretty sure they were since I got 2 for a cheap BT stereo pair. Built in speakers sounds passable but is not better than an iphone speaker imo.

    • +3

      Are they that bad really?
We have Google mini's and their sound quality is far superior to any phone or tablet speaker.
Certainly not comparable to anything with proper speakers, but surprisingly good for the size.

      • For the $10 i got them at, they will suffice. Better than any other $10 speakers i’ve tried. Would be hard to find something that equals its sound even at $20, though i have not tried the Google speakers as i’ve never had the chance to buy em cheap.

        • I got mine free with Telstra Plus points earned through bonus offers they ran at the start.

you need to get into an audiologist asap, they're better than an iPhone speaker

      • Try the speakers on the iphone 13 and up. You’d be very impressed. Slightly better dynamics but much, much better imaging, especially if you’re actually holding the phone while listening to music. Sounds crazy but Apple really worked their magic on these speakers.

The main issue i find with the echo dot 3rd gen is that they dont have mids. Guitars in particular sound quite bad on these speakers. I’d actually prefer the iphone speakers over them in stereo pair, especially if i’m actually holding and using the phone.

        • On the other hand, they do get rather loud (for their size) + there is a very basic eq in the alexa app I believe

  • If you want a smart assistant these are almost useless. By far the dumbest smart speakers of the big 3.

In what way? We gave up on google home mini because half of the time it did not pick up OK google

It earned a place on our kitchen bench, with plenty of use: timers, weather, news, play songs, games, control/automate smart lights/switches

  • How good are these compared to Echo Pop?

    • +2

      dot has a 3.5mm jack

    • They're also shilling the pop for $20 for new prime members…

      • Yeah, that's why trying to understand the better one

  • When is the AI talkie update?

  • -8

Pass. Don’t want Google to listen to every conversation.

      Google Amazon

    • +1

A firm believer of the conspiracy that Google owns everything, including Amazon - can't fault you

    • You could just mute the microphone.

  • +2

I went from gen 1 to gen 3 dot speakers and the output volume & sound quality of the gen 3 is so much better than the gen 1 that for even this price it is worth it.

The "AI" is meh but as a Bluetooth speaker, it is pretty good.

I might even get another couple to give as cheap Christmas presents.

  • I renewed my prime account to get echo pop for $20
You could also start a new prime account to claim the offer with the free trial.

    Good for a hockey puck

  • Can you actually pair echo with Google home? Anyone have experience?

  • Can this run quake emulator?

  • Is it cake?

  • I've used both speakers at home, the google home mini (Google) and echo dot gen.3 (Alexa).
    Sound quality is close
    Ease of use Alexa
    Reliability is Alexa

Last black friday I got the upscale echo dot gen.5 ($49).
Sound quality of the gen.5 is heaps above everything, a quality room speaker.

$19 delivered with OnePass is a good buy for a useful smart speaker.

Have not seen gen.3 available on Amazon for a while.
Maybe Amazon has sold remaining stock on the 2 for $29 deal.
Maybe the new echo pop is the replacement.
If so and you like gen.3, this might be your last chance to grab one and at a good price.

    • 2 for $29 on prime day tho hope to see it will be back on upcoming black friday

  • Can you trade these in here in Australia like you can in the USA? https://www.amazon.com/l/9187220011
