ShopBack and Large Cashbacks

We need to have a discussion about the dodgy practices of cashback sites. Much like regular online stores get banned for not following the rules they need to be held accountable for their promises. Smaller cashbacks don’t seem to be too much of a problem, but the larger ones do.

If you read the comments this is just the tip of the iceberg. I have also been a victim of this with an almost $400 cash back sitting pending for a considerable amount of time, and no response via email or enquiring with ShopBack. I’m starting to feel they don’t ’got your back’

Should these companies be held accountable for not providing their services? A vast majority of their click through with be from here, they need to do what they say

Trashback. Don’t buy if you normally wouldn’t.

  • Yes, Shopback only works with small, little, tiny cashbacks.

Thats how they make profit. Just like robinhood.
Take the big cashback give the smalls out
      Kidding

      • Yes

Or your cashbacks may be confirmed after we find new investors.

    • In my experience it’s been quite the opposite. I’ve found ShopBack to much better than Cashrewards.

This topic has been done to death.

There is nothing new to discuss.

Just assume that if you get the cash back that it's a bonus.

Unfortunately, 95% to 120% cashback deals are rampant, e.g. VPN, Pizza Hut, Boost Mobile. You cannot say people buy these not due to cashbacks.

There should be warning about cashbacks not tracked, paid out under all these deals.

Well there is…. If they are not honoring their 'deals' then they should be banned from posting ShopBack deals here.

The fact that these cashback companies seem to have a trend of failing on the big ones but working on the smaller ones would imply they are not as upfront as they seem to be.

I stopped using them for this reason. I would rather go without so they go without, then them stealing from me.

      • Just remember, if the company you're buying from doesn't pay the Cashback, the cash back site also miss out. Stop blaming the cash back site. It's the store you are buying from that is dodgy (here's looking at you Amazon)

        • Just remember

You forgot to tick the associated box when posting ;)

LOL then the cashback websites need to stop doing deals with the companies that are not paying them.

But we all know its not, its not like one of these cashbacks is now a company listed on the stock market ;)

Personally, I've never had a problem with Shopback(or Cashrewards).

I've messed up once or twice by not reading the terms and conditions carefully. I always use a separate browser profile without ad blocking for transactions.

  • Well I got my cashback from topcashback when they were offering 100% for nordvpn so …

  • Stop using these. Its a lazy business model and end up costing everyone more in the long term.

Had a couple of significant hotel cashbacks with SB still pending after due date. Followed up, and while a little slow, both were approved in the end.

    Obviously YMMV.

I don't think you can just lump all missing cashbacks in the same basket, because there is a variety of reasons why they are rejected. But some sort of visibility for the customer when a cashback is denied would be nice, given it is your purchase which sets the whole transaction in motion.

I haven't had issues the vast majority of the time, but the ones that haven't been honoured have been the big ones. The biggest was accommodation, I was going to get it anyway so it's not a loss, but knowing I did nothing wrong and for them to basically say I must have…leaves a sour taste.

I still use them but mostly small stuff, if I get it I do if I don't then so be it. It is dodgy though that it's no coincidence the big ones get knocked back and they just get away with it.

  • Vote with your feet.

  • I’ve had great results with both Cashrewards and ShopBack. And I have found they have both improved with time. And I have improved with time making sure that I follow the rules. I have also found them both very helpful if I have an issue. I’m very grateful for the money that I have saved.

  • Maybe I've just been lucky but nearly all my cashbacks have come through. The few which haven't were later resolved after contacting them though it was a long process or I didn't read the T&C correctly. I had about $1,600.00 of Deliveroo gift cards bought from ShopBack when the closed shop in Australia. ShopBack refunded it all back to me after just 2 emails.

  • I had a larger one that took over a year to get approved. I had posted on ozbargain and got a lot of these shitty responses that it shouldn’t be relied upon but if we follow all the rules and it’s promoted as such then no it should be honoured. I’ve since stopped using ShopBack unless it’s for tiny amounts but I stick with Cashrewards. Although Cashrewards didn’t pay out for a larger accomodation stay years ago and I’ve been salty ever since.

  • My biggest peeve is alot of the hotel ones eg Agoda is the worst for it the price is so much higher than the cash back value itself.

If check the price on google /hotels combined the price is cheaper than the cash back included price. What's the point.

  • Hey there mate, I've replied to your DM, appreciate your patience with me here.

As always, I'm happy to help out where I can with any issues users have with Cashback to the absolute best of my ability. It's in ShopBack's best interest to pay out Cashback so that we can encourage our users to keep using ShopBack, and we are always willing to look into ongoing issues or individual issues users have. The issues mentioned in the two forum posts you've linked are being investigate for improvement with the merchants involved, with a genuine want to make this experience better for our users, and for our merchants that work with us.

Thanks heaps for your ongoing honestly with me about the trouble you've had with ShopBack, the voice of our users that we get from OzBargain is invaluable to us, so even though it's not always positive. it's always important to us and I appreciate having the chance to help the community out where I can.

    • Please review all Giftz cashback transactions recently and update the Terms if necessary. I think it is an across-the-board issue that should not be solved by PM.

If Giftz doesn't pay any commission to Shopback, it should be pulled off immediately.

  • Hi guys, I am also having issues getting my cashback from shopback. I purchased a laptop from Lenovo during their EOFY23 sale with an upsized cashback of 15%. It was traced and all and I was due to get $400 by 20 August. A month and several emails later with shopback team and all they can give me was the merchant hasn't updated my order. I know that this is not true since I emailed and spoke to Lenovo and they can assure me that my transaction with them has been settled. Not sure what steps I can take to get my money from shopback.

  • Hmmm yeah seems like so, latest cashback for $12.20 (linked to Westpac bonus for $43 something) rejected too here.

My accommodation tracked with shopback has been declined. Large value too. Pretty annoyed to be honest as i had been careful and did the booking via the app. But they still blamed it on ad block, clicking via another browser, etc….

    • If the purchase was automatically tracked (not by claim), you haven't done wrong. If your accommodation was complete, there is no reason to for SB to decline it (unless dodgy practice is in place).
