[NSW] How Long Is Pink Slip Valid for?

For the purpose of registration renewal, is pink slip (safety inspection report) valid for 6 months or 42 days?

Service NSW website says 6 months, but TfNSW phone rep and some other website say 42 days?

Long story: opted for electronic registration, so not sure if TfNSW will still send out paperwork for renewal. Last week after filling up at the servo, I causally asked the mechanic what paperwork does he need for pink slip, he said none and he was available to do it, valid for 6 months. I thought why not.

I can see odometer reading has been updated using online check, so the mechanic has sent through the report. But it doesn't show up in online renew steps.

A quick call to TfNSW revealed that it's too early, need to wait within 6 weeks from due date. In the same call he mentioned pink slip is valid for 42 days.

  • You can do it six months in advance - maybe that's where that figure comes from?

    • It's possible that with paper registration, it is 42 days (6 weeks), since renew notice is required to get pink slip, and they don't send the notice until 6 weeks to due date.

With paperless registration, they have extended it to 6 months.

  • The web site that you linked to says this:

NSW reports are valid for 6 months, excluding public passenger vehicles.

They may mean "including", since they don't seem to go on to say anything different about public passenger vehicles. There are quite a few similar errors on that web site - it's terrible.

Interstate reports are valid for 42 days or less if the state has an earlier validity period.

Do you have a NSW report or an interstate report?

    • NSW report for NSW rego.

  • When did you do your pink slip and when you need to renew your car registration?

    • Timing will work out, renew window will open within 42 days, but good to understand the requirements.

  • If you don't register your car three months after it's due, your registration will be cancelled and you'll need a blueslip to re-register anyway.

  • I’m guessing the confusion is because of the 6-month rego option. When the only option was 12 months, the pink slip was only valid for 6 weeks. I guess if you choose 6 month rego payment, you can register a second 6 months without requiring a new pink slip.

    But I’m not RMS.

I think this is it, although I’m not sure how it actually works. I changed my rego from 12 to 6 months to get rego away from Christmas holiday time and pretty sure I had to get a pink slip after 6 months, but then not again for a year when I reverted to 12 month rego. So basically pink slip in Jan, then July, then July from then on.

Have pondered doing this, as rego falling on 3rd Jan as it is currently is not ideal at what is already a very expensive time of year.

    • To add to the confusion, Service NSW also says that one can renew registration up to 3 months in advance (double of 6 weeks).

When you click the online link and enter the rego, an error pops up:

      Cannot renew online
We need to check some details with you before you can complete your registration renewal. Please call us on 13 77 88, or visit a service centreOpens a new window. We apologise for any inconvenience.

and when you call that number, they tell you to wait for 6 weeks window.

A simple routine task becoming so convoluted.

Early payment for rego obviously applies only to vehicles that don’t need an inspection (<5yo).

  • Wouldn't it be quicker to take your query to the horses mouth? Phone call? Visit a licensing place?
(Not all mechanics are MENSA grade when it comes to knowledge of govt policy, even if they work in and around it)

Already spent 15 minutes on the call to TfNSW, who have said 42 days.

Walk-in will be a major hassle, parking and queues, certainly won't be faster.

Because website says 6 months, so no harm stirring up a discussion, in case someone in the know relies.

      • TfNSW has the final word?
I mean the number is the answer to life, the universe and everything

Maybe the various days you are questioning relate to different positions on the annual time line.
Eg inspection window, renewal date, renewal period applicable. And maybe the valid for x days just means a car can change owners multiple times without a new inspection required within the 42 day window from the last pink slip.

  • Have already renewed, so it doesn't really matter now.

Asked TfNSW again, this time they said 6 months, and "confirmed".

Anyway, in the future just do pink slip within 30 days, no more confusions.
