Lacklust. Biggest new feature of Apple Watch is the pinch gesture? Wowwwww. Biggest new feature on iPhone is the regular iPhone has last year's Pro features, and Pro has 5x optical zoom? Woowwwww.

And they get rid of leather but all the new bands are ugly af.

The real killer feature is being able to transfer photos and video at USB 3 speeds finally on the Pro iPhone, and being able to record Pro res straight to external storage/your Mac. Won't be long now until we have an Oscar winning film shot on an iPhone, someone will want to be the first to do it.

    • Agreed. The only product that piqued my interest was the iPhone 15 Pro.

    • To be fair, most of the bands have always been ugly af

    • +3

      Pro has 5x optical zoom

Pro Max only, which is disappointing as someone that prefers the smaller lighter 6.1 inch Pro.

Also $100 AUD price increase :( Though it is kinda fair given the recent decline in the value of the AUD.

    • +3

Thank you for your reliable Apple trolling.

    • +1

The problem for the pinch gesture is that it can be quite useful, but only available on S9 which is clear a money grab from Apple's end.
I know it says it needs the neural engine to function, but remember "wrist gestures" were a thing all the way back to 1st gen Android Wear and are already available as an accessibility feature in Apple Watch right now. Not sure how and why would they lock in an existing feature to a new model.

      • Not sure how and why would they lock in an existing feature to a new model

        You answered your own question:

clear a money grab from Apple's end.

Apple up to their old tricks, don't support SD card and charge overs for extra space, get rid of the headphone jack and charge overs for headphones, and on and on

    • Pro has 5x optical zoom

Pro max has 5x optical zoom and regular pro has 3x optical zoom.

      Scummy move from apple imo

Have you been under a rock for the past 10 years? That's how Apple products have been for the past 2 decades.

  • I thought they’d drop the 128GB on the Pros, but surprised it’s only the Pro Max.
Also surprised it’s only 10GB USB-C on the Pros, I’d have bet they’d go 20 (I knew 40 was a dream). Not surprised it isn’t on the standard 15s.

    • I guess it's smart to drop the 128GB so they can claim that the 256GB model is the same price as last year's 256GB model, instead of saying that the entry level Pro Max just went up in price.

      • I mean, yes, but no.
128GB is inadequate for many people these days, especially with the video and EDR photo capabilities. It makes sense to start at 256, but they also haven’t increased the price of that model.

Genuinely surprised the iPad not only still has a 64GB option, but then jumps to 256GB.

        • On the plus side you can record video to external SSD so that alleviates the space concerns somewhat

    • I'd say it's a SoC limitation or a Power stage problem. Or they want room for the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max next year.

Thunderbolt 3/4 should be possible. Licensing might be an issue for the A17, as well as saving space for the SoC where you would need buffers and power stages for 40gbps or TB4 features that the chipset may not have.

The likely problem is that they "need" MFI "certification" chips on USB-C cables and accessories. And, there will be a gap between the "legacy" USB-C used for the Macbook, iPad Pro, et al. and the NEW USB-C cables, sic which need their MFI DRM i.e. iAP2. or iAP v2.1/2.5/3.0, sic.

Time will tell if they block PD charging. It would not be very "Carbon Neutral" to have to buy a new USB power adaptor and USB-C cable for the iPhone 15. Given that the iPad Pro M1/M2 has TB4/USB4, it's hard to know what the decision/choice is. Was it because of MFI, or is it a legacy hardware problem.

    Any bargains?

    • +6

There are never any deals on new release Apple products.

The best deal is to buy discounted Apple Store gift cards from a deal like this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/795265
Then if you go overseas claim the TRS GST refund.

      • Over the year I’ve bought discounted prepaid Visa/Mastercards and used those to buy discounted JB gift cards

Saved $380 off $2500 of gift cards

        • That is nice. What are the examples of those cards?
And where do you get it from?
Discount on Visa cards, then stacking up with discount on gift cards!
          Very nice.

          • @jpandat111: Vanilla Visa Prepaid is 10% off at Coles with flybuys until Tuesday, then you can get discounted JB or Officeworks cards through ShopBack or CashRewards etc

If the Vanilla Prepaid works at Woolworths for gift card purchases (check the gift card FAQ) then you can get 10% back in reward points until Tuesday on select BlackHawk Network cards

      • +1

Another option, depending on your employer and industry, is to salary sacrifice the phone and effectively pay for it before tax.

        • But after I read the terms it seems it would not be possible to double dipping with savings from gift card discounts, isn't it?

Strangely enough when I pay in full with gift cards or account balances through Apple Store, taxes are still present on the invoice.

    • +2

This is not Samsung Phones mate that offers education and life insurances on pre orders. Kidding aside.

If you want bargain, avoid Apple

      • Exactly. Samsung's are literally 30-40% off on day 1. Wonder why they even bother with their RRP pricing?

      • Yes… if the item doesn't provide you value for the price being offered, don't purchase it.
there's your bargain tip. There's plenty of options for everyone's needs

    • Yes. USB-C

    • Here's a weird one - I am buying 2x Pros through Credit Line @ $4.95 pm account fees I end up paying about 1.5% more ($118.5) over 24 months, whereas my mortgage is @ 6.18% which is offset for the same amount. I think I am saving money.

    • blackfriday

      • You can just call it Friday

        • +1

context is everything… it aint good friday or casual friday

  • +1

Hmm so iPhone 15 pro is same price as 14 pro in US, but more here? What gives? They’re not even including a lightning to usb c adaptor, cmon.

    • +5

AUD has fallen in value over the last year (and Apple normally updates prices only every 6-12 months). It sucks but it is probably fair.

      • +1

999 USD is 1555, add gst and it should be 1700, not 1850

        • +6

Right but the USD has increased 6.61% in value against AUD in the last year. 1749 * 1.0661 = 1864.61 AUD.

The cost in USD has stayed pretty much exactly the same (in fact it's fallen).

The price in Australia will never exactly match the USD price (which doesn't include sales taxes) due to the smaller market and stronger consumer protections in Australia. I'm happy to pay $138 ($1849-$1711) extra to have a 2 year warranty from the ACL forcing Apple to fix my phone if it breaks.

          • +4

            @stirlo:

I'm happy to pay $138 ($1849-$1711) extra to have a 2 year warranty from the ACL forcing Apple to fix my phone if it breaks

In my experience, they fixed my iPhone SE (2016) two and a half years after I bought it. Was unreal - I went in to get the battery replaced and they just replaced the whole phone at no cost to me

          • @stirlo: hold on a second, right now $US999 is $AUD1,555 which includes "the USD has increased 6.61%"
The $US999 back then was $1500.

So I do not understand how you mentally justify this apple double dipping

$1650 then vs $1700 now including GST

Can you show me your calculations

            • @mrkorrupt: A further 6% increase of USD has been priced in? for the next year.

            • +1

@mrkorrupt: Last year they calculated $999USD + Extra Australian costs = $1749 AUD

This year USD has strengthened by 6.6% so they took the 1749 and increased it by 6.6%. The underlying extra amount Apple makes doesn’t matter (this year it’s $138AUD, previously years it was around $150AUD)

  • The iPhones on the apple website appear to have no sim tray. How am I gonna buy one as a boost mobile user lol

    • +1

They have a SIM tray internationally, eSIM only in US

    • +3

Tech Specs on the Apple Australia site still say:

      Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)
      Dual eSIM support

So I think we still get regular SIM for at least another year.

  • +12

Can't beat Samsung new phone pre-orders with free earphones, vacuums, washing machine, Fridge and gift cards lol.

    • Lol they really give you a washing machine? Given the problem they've had I'm not so sure I'd want one of those…

    • -5

ttoo bad the phones are total crap lol

      • +1

Then how do you describe Samsung and Google Pixel phones? lol

    • +1

Not hating on the products but all that does for Samsung is instantly devalue their products and makes sure there's little resale value after a few months. It's a matter of preference - you prefer Samsung's wild deals. Other's prefer Apple maintaining their prices which results in better resale value. I personally happen to prefer Google Pixels which has worse deals than Samsung and shit resale value too 🤣

      • +1

Everyone should know this by now and stop putting Samsung to the table comparing to Apple. Stop flexing you have this feature first or whatever you have with your Samsung. It is still SAMSUNG. lol hahaha

  • +24

    apple watches banned in Italy.
too many users accept calls and skips songs due to the way they speak and pinch their fingers

  • +7

And let me guess… This changes everything… “again”.

    • That's just marketing and I don't see what's wrong with it. What do you want them to say?

Surely by now you realize by now that phones have plateaued and are only going to get marginally better without much innovation on most years.

    • it does. now i have to throw out all the lightning cable in my house.

  • Put me down for an ultra , which band is best though?

    • +7

      which band is best though?

      U2, if you ask Apple

      • Lol. My response was Led Zeppelin. Siri can be very indecisive.

    • +1

I would recommend the Trail Loop. I bought the Ultra (1st gen) with the Alpine loop originally but I found it annoying to hook the clasp each time. Much quicker and easier with the trail loop, which uses a sort of velcro

  • +2

iphones start from $1500 holy crap
so if I lose my $400 amaysim iphone mini I will also lose my house replacing it

    • +10

You live in a $1500 tent?

      • +1

        Could be a glorified tent.

      • It's harbourside mansion in Sydney that I bought in the 80s. Not sure if prices have gone up or down since 🤷‍♂️

  • +13

Apple make great products, cant argue with that.

but, this pricing is bordering insanity.

    • -2

And your reasoning for that is?

      • Apple Watch Ultra is an extra $100 for arguably the same thing in black.
All iPhones have stepped up in pricing, $2199 for the Pro Max is ludicrous.

Yeah Yeah, exchange rates and incremental improvements all round. But if I were to update my current gear, lets say Apple Watch Ultra 2 + 15 Pro Max - that's $3,598.

I'm struggling to justify that, and that's coming from someone who's entrenched in the eco-system.

        • +6

Ultra is pretty extreme though, it's basically a diving computer. Most people don't even go scuba diving, let alone down to whatever depth the Ultra is rated for.

        • +1

By Apple's own description they are a 'luxury computer company'. If you're struggling to afford their products you aren't their target market anymore. One day when iPhone hits $3-4000 Apple customers will keep buying them and will only have themselves to blame for ripping themselves off.

    • +3

Sure but Apple products also hold resell value like nothing else. Other flagship phones are around the same price and their value drops significantly in a year.

    • The pricing has been same for a while isnt it? I remember spending around same 4 years ago for my iPhone 11 pro base spec.

    • Apple is far better priced than your Wollies and Coles!

    • The prices reflect the insanity of the buyers

  • Pretty laughable really. Virtually nothing of value added, and an extra $100 on the price/profit margin?

And no real AI from apple either - you'd have thought that by now they would have managed to offer useful services that were smart, not just clicking your fingers together.

    • +2

Pretty laughable really. Virtually nothing of value added

I mean, only if you bought any of last years line up.

If you have anything older, you'd likely see great benefit.

I have an iPhone 12 mini so this years lineup of iPhone would be far, far better than my iPhone 12m.

But I can't stomach those prices + getting a phone that'd be maybe 20-25% larger than my current device.

Maybe next year they'll use an iPhone 13 mini chassis as their iPhone SE.

    • their costs went up $100

    • +1

Why is it laughable? Surely by now you realize by now that phones have plateaued and are only going to get marginally better without much innovation on most years.

    • +1

A second rate AI won't help Apple much in the long run. I bet they want to wait until they have an AI that feels truly conversational, and that remembers things long term. The longer they wait the more on-device processing power they will have, next year's chip always puts the last year's chip to shame.

  • Merged from iPhone 15 and 15 Pro has been release - Thoughts?

iPhone 15 and 15 Pro has been release - Thoughts?

    • +1
      • That is not an original thought…

        • Average Apple experience.

    • Its overpriced again. What's new?

    • "Thoughts?"
      I won't be buying one
      .

  • -5

lol no one’s talking about how they changed the charging port again. That’s what I most peeved about,

    • +2

its a plus for everyone that they changed the charging port. now its more universal and less lightning (proprietary).

this is the last thing you should be peeved about???????

      • -5

Clearly not as peeved as you, thanks for the neg.

I said it half jokingly, all my lightening cables will have to go to the landfill lol.

    • Outside of Reddit and OzBargain, no one gives a shit

    • +1

Well it does make my $180 Backbone controller useless for future iPhones. Backbone better offer us free adapters, I'm not dropping $180 on a USB C version..

      • $50 for an official adapter: https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MUQX3FE/A/usb-c-to-lig…

Or you can find the usual cheap ones on eBay/amazon

          • @AustriaBargain: Oh, ouch. Hopefully they made the connector modular but I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

Also LOL at the product description:
“Works with any iPhone. Compatible with all the latest iPhone devices. Adapter included for perfect fit with iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.”

Works with any iPhone!!!!! Maybe you can get a refund out of them because of that statement…

            • @stirlo: It works with those iPhones without the adapter, but the Backbone was made before those iPhones so the larger camera bump on them makes it sit in the Backbone awkwardly. Now with USB C it doesn't fit in them at all. The USB C version of Backbone will work with new iPhones, if you update it with an iPhone first or buy a new one with the latest firmware.

Kinda annoying the whole situation. Sure I could keep an old iPhone to use with Backbone when I buy a new iPhone, but then why not just buy a proper portable :S Or buy a new Backbone, but then I'll have spent $360 on phone controllers…

  • +7

I always get a small laugh when I hear Apple talking about the Dynamic Island like it's a great feauture. We made a large camera cutout and then when you get a notification, it gets bigger, genius.

    • +1

It is a persistent notification area, quite a bit UI change even if it is just to disguise the pill. My guess is that Apple thinks they may have a large pill for camera and lidar and who knows what else for years ahead, especially if they want to take 3D video with the front facing camera one day. They are already letting us take 3D video with two of the rear cameras. The lidar can make 3D video already but two cameras would help a lot I think.

      • I get the feature, it doesn't look bad, but that is a big cutout on the screen when using the phone for fullscreen gaming or movies.

        • … Which also reduces the vertical height of the screen as it sits lower than previous notch, so you get smaller screen basically.

    • I'd like you to go to a university campus. Find someone with an Android phone. Check if they've installed something replicating the Dynamic Island on it. They likely have. It's not really innovative and it may not be a feature, but it is appealing to many.

      • +1

Might get a bit creepy if I start walking around a university asking to check out people's phones. But I'll ask around my workplace instead :)

But I did work with a lot of uni students in the last few years (was in hospitality until last year) and I've never seen anyone with anything similar.
