Back with more mechanical keyboards on sale and this time we have two different variants of the Ajazz AK992 available. First up is the AK992 Retro variant for US$34.50 (~A$54.17) which follows a retro colour scheme and uses Red Linear switches. This one is Wired Only via USB-C and supports a single backlight colour.

The second variant is the AK992 Black Pink for US$45 (~A$70.65) which is mostly covered in black with a few pink keys and comes with either Red Linear or Brown Tactile switches. This one has USB-C, 2.4GHz Wireless and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, a 1200mAh battery and no backlight colours.

Both keyboards have 3/5 pin hot swappable switches, pre-lubed switches/stabilisers, PBT key caps, 99 keys and a volume knob.

  • Decent value, especially considering gasket mount and hotswappability

No backlight is the obvious caveat though, a deal-breaker for some.

    • You could always swap the keycaps on the Retro for another colour, though that would be added cost. I personally love the retro designs myself.

    • Yeah, $54 is awesome value for a complete hotswap gasket board. It is backlit, just the keys aren't shine-through. Given the retro aesthetic, that would probably clash badly.

(If anyone does replace the keycaps on this, just avoid Cherry profile, as this board appears to have North-facing switches, so there's a good chance the keycaps will foul the switch housing.)

      • There are 3 models - non-backlit, mono backlight and coloured. Smaller battery in the non-backlight one, otherwise much the same. I have the coloured light one but yes, the caps aren't translucent so I had to spend more money on replacements (I got these lenovo pudding ones, the set included the odd sized keys needed https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004536761030.html ). Nice to type on, compact size without sacrificing the number pad.

        • Oh, I was looking at the cheaper models, which were backlit. It says only the wireless one is not backlit (which at least saves on battery).

Yeah, those are OEM profile, so same shape as the stock keycaps. I've had them before and they have that nice PBT roughness on top (although the sound signature ruined them for me, but not everyone cares about that).

  • Memories of my IBM keyboard that lasted 20 years ….is this red switch clicky or silent ?

    • Red is linear, Brown is tactile, and blue is clicky. At least it's true for the "basic" switches.

    • +1

Should never have gotten rid of my Honeywell keyboard.

      • I forgot about them, they were the best. 👍

  • I think I've read on another deal somewhere that the switches are rebranded outemus? Can someone confirm?

    • Yes that's correct. Unless otherwise stated they're Outemu rebrands.

  • Awesome looking keyboard- bought one. Thanks OP

  • +5

not really retro it doesn't have the 6 block above the arrows…
am I the only one that likes that layout?

    • This is what we a call a 96% keyboard, so it's more retro in the colour scheme. I am a huge fan of the Lofree Block 98 with it's retro design. Again not a 100% layout keyboard though.

      • Discount on this one? :)

        • Keen to know if there is any discount on the Block 98 as well!

          • @morpheous: +1 would buy in a heartbeat.

            • +1

@Sherro: I found the Lofree Block 98 board to be cheaper on the lofree website using code "ryo10". ALso includes free delivery

    • +1

That killed the deal for me… I like full size, not this compact nonsense

      • +5

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it "nonsense".

        • +2

True, it's a good deal and I'd be tempted to buy it if I didn't have so many keyboards.

But it's also "nonsense" to call it "retro" with this modern layout.

          • +4

@idonotknowwhy: The 1800 layout (very similar to this keyboard's layout) was first seen in 1989, with the Cherry G80-1800: https://thekey.company/blogs/blog-updates/behind-the-design-….

I think a design dating back 30 years can be considered sufficiently "retro".

            • -1

              @smartazz104: It's not a design dating back 30 years.
The Cherry had ALL THE KEYS, just moved the 6 keys to above the numpad instead of to the left of it.
This one is MISSING THOSE KEYS!

Instead of blindly defending the product, I suggest you actually read and realize what we're posting about.
Full size keyboards HAVE ALL THE KEYS/DON'T NEED TO RELY ON THAT STUPID Fn KEY!!!

Some people don't use those keys, and it might be ok for them.
For those of us that do use those keys, the keyboards that are missing keys is just nonsense.

@jkim: Get angry over such simple things is a sign of some deep seated issues…

        • -1

It's nonsense "for me". It might not be "for you".

      • +1

        Agreed, 101/104 key or nothing

      • yeah for me too, I got a BTC8190 now which is 104 keys + extra office keys, from the time they made proper keyboards. I had to buy a PS/2 to USB adapter for $10 as my new motherboard (MSI Z690 Tomahawk) didn't come with a PS/2 port.

    • Seconded

    • +1

Just retro beige colors. The lettering on the key caps and the layout are both modern.

Any chance of a discount on the Ajazz AK820 or AK820 Pro?

    • +1

Not at this stage as it's a new release. Potentially something next month.

  • +2

didnt need to add another mechanical keyboard to my already humble collection of 4, but i haven't bought a kb for 3+ years now, i feel it's time.
bought the wired one mainly because i really like the keycap colour scheme! and also numpad for an accountant is always a winner.

  • Pulled the trigger! I own 2 corsair k70 RGB for home use and was keen for something for work with a good bang for buck and a similar feel. Keen to see how these stack up.

  • +2

    Greige is the new black.

  • Can the keys be remapped? I never understand why 96% remove the End key on the right hand side. Me as a programmer needs "END" a lot.

    • real programmers use E, $ or G for end :V

  • +1

Decent keyboard. Keycaps are ok albeit a little 'thin'. The board is very light but very easy to crack open and mod. The 'sound profile' if you care, is definitely 'hollow sounding'. Could improve it with mods (eg. dynamat on the bottom cover + foam).

    • Where do you buy dynamat in cuts that are suitable for mechanical keyboards? I had a look online and can't find anything concrete.

      Follow-up questions:

      What thickness do you recommend?

  • Would be nice if these keyboards were available as "barebones" kit (no switches or keycaps).

  • @Clear OP consider me intrigued. I visited your website but found the Filters function frustratingly limited.

    Do you have
    - 75% keyboards
    - Wireless (2.5ghz, Bluetooth)
    - Wired (USB-C)
    - MacOS/Windows/iOS switch
    - Mechanical Brown
    - Low-Profile
    - Gasket
    - (Optional) Hot-swappable
    - (Optional) Knob
    - (Optional) QMK/VIA

Basically I'm after a Nuphy Air75 v2 (note: this has an improved 1000Hz 2.4G polling rate too) but with a Knob and cheaper.

  • This is one for the people who have gone down the rabbithole.

I’m adding the AK992 to my collection of the below kbs, can anyone comment what I’m improving on/losing out (ignoring Bluetooth/wireless connectivity) on given the price is a lot cheaper but also the advancement in mech kbs since my first one?

    • Keychron K4 Gateron Brown (metal housing) – my daily driver, I need numpad for work
    • Anne pro 2 Kailh box white – in storage now
    • Ducky one 2 mini cherry mx brown – wife’s daily driver
    • The OG Filco Majestouch cherry mx blue – also in storage now
  • Lofree OE909 Touch PBT OLED Screen Wireless Mouse any coupon on theses?

  • Bought one! Cheers for my first cheap keyboard build.
Black, brown switch, backlight (no rgb) I think.
Hopefully shipping doesn't take toooo long.

  • Does anyone know if I can swap out the keycaps for normal ones, like from the recent Ducky deals?
