Thanks to the coupon there's a low price on this Samsung M.2 2230 sized SSD that's perfect for upgrading the storage in the 64GB Steam Deck. It's also suitable for the ASUS ROG Ally, Surface Pro 9, 8, 7+ X, Surface Laptop 3, 4, Go and Surface Book 3.

While some may prefer to wait for the Western Digital SN740 to go on sale again, the Steam Deck only runs at Gen3 speeds so you won't see a big difference in speed with the Gen4 SN740. The only other advantage of the SN740 is that you can get it in 2TB.

  • Been using this SSD with my Steam Deck for months, no issues at all.
My AliExpress order came a few days earlier than estimated, which was nice.

Can this kind of stuff be trusted off aliexpress? Can i buy DDR3 ram and stuff off there?

    • Yep this is trusted. You can easily get a lot of cheap DDR3 RAM too. A very quick search found this listing where you can get "Memory Capacity: DDR3 8GB 1600MHz X 2" with heatsinks for US$16. You may be able to find cheaper elsewhere.

    • Do you mean aIiexpress?

You will get working products but assume it is used. There are manufacturers that even pull chips/dimms from discarded boards and remanufacture them onto new boards.

I've bought DDR3 ram off aliexpress before, it was some obscure brand but the chips turned out to be samsung modules

  • Tempted. But bit concerned given that store doesn't have a storefront.
Can't easily see their feedback, have to dig through reviews on their other items … makes me wonder if they're hiding bad ones as I can't see their total average.

makes me wonder if they're hiding bad ones as I can't see their total average.

Impossible for the store to do that. Rather it's a "Choice" store so the stock is fulfilled by AliExpress and the store is typically trustworthy. From the source code the following tag will tell you and it's high:

      "sellerPositiveRate":"98.3"

      • Thanks! didn't know what "choice" stores were. Will order.

Great to see the prices going down so fast. They were close to $300 when I got my steam deck about a year ago.

  • These are good. I got one back in June when there was the cheapest deal for a steam deck. $100 bucks so this is very cheap

  • Anyone tried these with the xbox series s/x expansion card adapter?

    • Yes I'll be keen to see how well it works with an adaptor. I've been eying this adaptor but reviews are not great.

      • Yeah also been looking at Amazon reviews and they sound pretty average :( might pass on this

      • Have you read the reviews ?

Most of the bad reviews are from people who tried to use the adaptor with other drives which obviously doesn't work, the XBox only supports WD CH SN530 drives. Reviews from the users with WD CH SN530 are fine 👍

  • I'm interested in one as a tiny and fast external SSD, does anyone know the SLC cache size and the write speed after it is exhausted?

    • These aren't slc AFAIK and they're dramless

      • A pseudo-SLC cache is used in most (if not all) modern SSDs to improve write speeds, its size depends on the model/size of the SSD and once it fills write speeds will drop significantly.

        • +1

pSLC cache in the 512GB is ~55GB. One would assume it would be ~110GB in the 1TB but I don't know for sure.

          • @Clear: Any idea of the write speeds afterwards? I'm guessing ~4-500MB/s for a TLC drive like this.

In my Steam Deck. 2 months. So far so good.

I'm having issues applying the code, it says can't be used with other offers, what other offer is being applied?!

  • Buy This or wait for WD for Rog Ally?
