Whenever I go there to big 3 (SC, Rep, Abarn) they treat people as if they are serial killers or theft with a cold grumpy face.

    • Same bad experience here, they employ low IQ bullies who know nothing about being a shop attendant.

Better than being treated like an idiot by a 19 year old kid who thinks they know everything about cars.

Us in the "older" age group are often worse though, unless they're still working in the field, or are nerds.

Well, 1st she wouldn't give me the oil recycling credit and said she wasn't aware of such promotion, 2nd, she refused to give me the free oil pan as it was c&c and finally she refused to price beat the Nulon oil with Autobarn as the price was already low. I said enough is enough.

That's not supposed to be a dis, just when you're dealing with retail/hospitality – customer service broadly – reason is supplementary at best.

            • @Mortin: Geez. I've heard a lot of stories like that lately. What's happening that it's so hard to find good workers? Is the pay that low?

For the past few years I've been lazy and use an oil extractor (got given a 6L one, just googling most seem ridiculously expensive but this 9L one seems reasonably priced) No mess, no crawling under cars.

One of our cars replacing the filter is easy, turn the wheel and it's accessible in the wheel arch. The other is a pain, hard to reach and loosen by hand and a bugger to get those universal filter wrenches in there so I printed one for that filter, makes the job so much easier.

Just dont be in a rush when filling the oil. It can take a while to run down so checking the level may look like it's not enough and you end up overfilling. The level will drop a little when you run it and it fills the filter too.

@bamzero: Cool! Thanks for that, it’s a Honda Jazz (late 2014) so should be fairly easy to do (watching YouTube videos). We also have a 2015 Pathfinder but that seems more complicated (even though you probably still can by staring the wheel and not needing to remove the wheel). I’ll start off with the Jazz and see how I go.

  • Very versatile oil suits all my cars - Clubsport, Silverado , Golf GTI and even the misses new RAV4 hybrid when it arrives. Been using it for years and no complaints.

    • +8

      subtle flex

    • +1

Don't use it with the RAV4 Hybrid, the A25 motor was specifically designed for 0w-16. Even the manual says you can use 0w-20 for short periods of time, but to flush and swap back to 0w-16 on your next change.

Penrite makes a great hybrid specific 0w-16 that I use in ours.

      • +1

Thanks for the heads up - appreciated

      • Actually A25 is not that sensitive. Toyota Camry manual (same A25 engine) says 0W16, 0W20, 5W20, 5W30, 10W30

My Toyota dealership uses 0W20 which is probably a good balance between fuel economy and operation under high speed/extreme load conditions

        • I understand one of the big reasons for moving to thinner oil is because much of the ancillary pumps on the hybrid are all electric, as their is no aux belt. The AC compressor, the oil pump, etc all need to continue to operate while the engine is off, so they are all electric now. The A25A-FKS motor on the non-hybrid is still belt driven.

Another factor is how the engine operates. In the hybrid, the eCVT manages the engine RPM, the engine will never operate near its actual rev limiter. The engine will never see any sort of extreme loads as the electric motors are there to do a lot of the heavy lifting. On the other hand the engine will cycle on and off constantly and has to be able to operate from cold quickly to produce electricity for the electric motors.

I think outside of a heavy towing situation, the hybrid will never need a thicker oil, and given the changes to the oil system it makes sense why the manual wording is very strict about using a 0w-16.

          • @FuRyZ: The 2GR V6 engine still has a water pump belt in hybrid form.

Am looking for oil change for my VW petrol, have an option of either Castrol Edge LL (66$) vs Penrite Enviro+ (76$). Both are 504/507.

Also its been a year since the oil change and the car has done just 3K KM. Can I push it for another few months?

    • +5

Also its been a year since the oil change and the car has done just 3K KM. Can I push it for another few months?

At 3K per year, I'd have absolutely no concern about changing every third year if you have fully synthetic oil in there.
It's very stable and it doesn't really degrade with age.

      • Cool thanks mate. I will wait till early next year.

      • I do similar Ks, about 3,500 KMs per year, only short trips less than 5km, mainly cold start in the morning and afternoon. It's very hard on the engine. If you drive the same condition, I'd suggest change oil every year. I only use fully synthetic oil too.

        • Primarily short trip life for an engine is very rough, that's true but oil changes are necessary largely due to oil breakdown due from high temperatures and combustion by-products.

While it's good to do regular oil changes as a rule, I don't really think there's any particular reason that short trips (low aggregate kms) make it more necessary (if using fully synth) or that it will protect your engine under such punishing conditions.

If it's still under warranty, you should follow the log book time interval, otherwise the dealer could deny your warranty claim saying you didn't service in time. E.g. some cars have 12 month intervals, some have 6.

      • +1

Correct. But no warranty so all good. Thanks.

    • +1

Castrol is the manufacturer (VW) recommended oil if that helps you

      • Cool, thanks mate :)

  • Says not compatible with my car but other 5-30w syn are? Does it matter? Is there some other spec that matters?

    • There certainly are other specs that matter!

    • +2

eBay's Garage feature is rubbish. Penrite has their own car checker on their own website if you want to check.

      • I checked my car and they recommend 5W-30 (which is right) but they also recommend the 5W-40 one without saying why so I feel so confused now.

    • Use supercheap auto's one in store otherwise go to the manufacturer website. For example, there are many 5w-30 Mobil oils so it's important to choose the correct rating for your car.

  • About to do my first service on a diesel, and it looks like the equivalent oil is twice the price :(

  • How does Penrite compare with other brands?

    • +3

      It's an Australian company.

    • +3

Usually more expensive than others, in top quality, imo.

    • +4

What matters is that the oil meets the specs your car needs - I don't really consider the brand to be important 🤷🏼‍♂️ But I also probably wouldn't use a brand that I'd never heard of.

    • The repco brand is Penrite in a different bottle.

Peeps, if it's outta stock. Go to an Autobarn store and ask them to price match it. I haven't tried it yet but read something about price matching.

    • Yeh I price matched oil against Repco last year, Autobarn oil filters are cheaper so was going there anyway.
Pretty sure was still in stock at the nearby Repco though. He did look it up and go check with the boss so hopefully you'd have the same luck if OOS elsewhere.

    • Autobarn will not price match for me stating the SCA next door has no more stock because I came from there. The manager was also very rude when he refused because I told him at that time another SCA store does show to have stock and he quipped "then go over there to buy it".

A real nice guy this Autobarn manager. I'm sure the staff there under him must be an even nicer bunch!

  • +2

Tried to price match at Autobarn but the manager rudely refused just on the basis that the SCA next door has no more stock. At that time another SCA branch did have stock. I checked Autobarn's T&C, they only mentioned competitor must have stock and SCA is the competitor and they do have stock, just not the store nearby.

In the end went over to Repco and got a price match there. Repco staff did say that price is just too good, he had to double check the conditions again for price match before doing the price match but in the end he did it.

  • Question: when you do the oil change where do you record it? I'll print out receipts too, but I have bought a couple of years worth of oil (as little Honda jazz and bought two bottles and I do less than 10k a year). Do you keep oil oil filter too, or will box of new filter writing date on suffice? Thanks

    • +1

In the service history book, the same place as your dealer/mechanic would record it.

      • Thanks
