Seiko King Turtle JDM SRPE05J $399 (Green Dial, Silicone Strap, RRP$950), SRPE39K $449 (Expired) @ Starbuy

540

Party’s over on the SRPE39K, it’s back to $549 again. Well done to those who scored one at the discounted price. If you really want a stainless steel bracelet the PADI SRPE99K is only $436, but at the sacrifice of sapphire for Hardlex glass.

Edit: thanks to Astronaut Joe for reminding me the fun’s still on for the SRPE39K over at Watch Depot.

However, the original deal for the green dial SRPE05J with silicone strap is still going and will expire at 10am on Monday (unless sold out).

Deepak was has been watching and listening. As well as the original Star Deal shown below he's also changed the price on the very popular King Turtle that come in with the blue dial and a stainless steel bracelet, to match what Watch Depot are selling it for.

So, this makes it two big watches at great prices!

Original post

A big watch at a great price. Waffle Green dial, 45mm, automatic calibre, with sapphire glass.

Copy/Paste from the web site:

Seiko JDM SRPE05J Automatic Prospex 200m Divers Watch Green King Turtle. This mens watch features a stainless steel case and a green silicone rubber strap, with a screw lock crown and a screw case back. The Seiko SRPE05J1 features a green waffle dial and uses a 4R36 movement featuring a self winding automatic movement with a manual wind capacity. The SRPE05 features Sapphire Glass and a Ceramic bezel insert.

The King Turtle JDM SRPE05J has a case size of 45mm with a thickness of 13.2mm and a lug-to-lug size of 47.7mm with an approximate weight of 125gm. Like all Seiko turtles, this watch has a water resistance rating of 200m and features a Unidirectional rotating bezel, a screw lock crown, a screw case back and a tang buckle. Additional features as a King Turtle are Sapphire crystal glass with a magnifier (cyclops) with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface and a ceramic bezel insert.

What we love: King Turtle with the ceramic bezel and sapphire glass. Cyclops. Classic green waffle dial. A complete turtle + a JDM model. What more could you ask for.

Nice watch, here are some reviews of similar models - Watch Depot Review of the Seiko SRPH37K (green dial)
Just One More Watch Review of the SRPE03K

I found some better pics online - Pic 1, Pic 2, Pic 3, Pic 4.

    • Review mentions bad alignment with the turtles. Anyone who bought one can comment about the severity of Seiko's alignment?

      • It usually depends how bad your OCD is. I've seen Seikos where the alignment was whinged about and I had to squint and stare to see it. Other times, once you've seen it you can't unsee it. It is a running joke that you know you have a genuine Seiko when there is a misalignment. I should say though that in my modest collection of (genuine!) Seikos all of them are perfectly aligned.

The guy from The Watch Channel on YT claims, and I have no evidence for this, that Starbuy checks their Seikos for alignment before sending them out. I'm not sure if Deepak is willing to confirm or deny this though.

        • Just send an email for them to check it before sending, it's true that Seiko quality control is a bit rubbish. Would save you sending it back and I wouldn't be happy if it's too much out.

Ps. I sent a citizen back as the bezel was out of alignment vs cheaper ring, they were great in doing return postage and sending a good one out. It would Be good if every store did check it and would save everybody's time and postage, Just like if you're picking one up from a retail store, you would inspect it.

      • Welcome to Seiko.

Tough choice, spend $400 dollar on a nice dependable japanese automatic dive watch, or wait in line tomorrow for a 600$ disposable plastic swiss made automatic dive watch…

    • +1

If you're not already in line, then you've probably missed out.

      • iirc the Swatch/Blancpain is not limited.

        • Not limited in time and but limited in production numbers so they deliberately produce only a small number at a time in attempt to prolong the hype

      • +1

Why get in line? Just wait a bit*. I was in Switzerland a couple of months back and Moonswatches were everywhere.

Of course, the people waiting in line then braving the crush when the stores open will be flipping them the same day for a 50% markup, so who's the real mug?

*or better yet, just don't bother

      • +1

I do want to miss out

    • +5

Anyone who actually wants one of those Swatch Blancpains is out of their minds

      • +2

Plastic rubbish, one piece non-serviceable apparently. Don't add to the hype (this includes moonswatches).

        • +1

The environmental impact of Swatch watches has always been questionable, but I could maybe excuse someone for buying a cheap one. Spending hundreds for a Swatch however is a joke

          • @beltdrive: Yeah the whole point of them in the 90s was a colourful trendy digital watch, forget how much the typical swatches were maybe $90-120 or something. I wouldn't spend more than that, I'm sure most people haven't been able to flip those moonswatches like they thought they could on eBay.

    • We're talking about the Mission To series yeah?

      • Nah, they just announced a new overpriced collab

      • Unfortunately there's now more than one, and it won't give up anytime soon given how successful the moonswatch was.

The new one, a collab with Blancpain is the same plastic (sorry… bioceramic ) crappy case that will invariably break after a few months, however the notable difference (beyond the $630 price tag) is that it's got an automatic movement (Sistem51) instead of a quartz.

TBH I like the design, the caseback is GORGEOUS and the automatic movement is a +1 for them, however it's still a plastic disposable watch that is seriously overpriced.

I picked up a new Seiko 5 limited edition Super Cup for $50 LESS than one of these Blancpain crossovers yesterday. There's much more value to be had out there.

        • And let's not even menton the "passion for diving" / "scuba" / "ocean" / "blah blah" plastered all over it, and they couldn't even rate it for 100m WR.

        • Let’s not forget once it’s breaks it’s not serviceable or repairable. The movement is all soldered on so once it’s out of warranty you got a fake plastic toy that doesn’t work

    • Not gonna lie those swatch Montblanc look bloody cool to me. Also not gonna spend 600 and not like I'd be able to find one anyway.

The sludge green of this watch doesn't appeal to me, but I'm not you. If you're vacillating, here's a video from possibly one of the most boring (if comprehensive) watch reviewers on the tube:

The dial is way, way more spectacular in real life - a couple of my local jewellers have it in stock so it might be fairly common in the wild to take a look at it.

          • @Astronaut Joe: So incredibly tempting. This or hold out for a $600 Sei-ytona panda.

            • @Powershopz: Totally different, do you want an Auto or solar?

              • @G-rig: Have plenty of autos. No solar.

I'd take both if money want an issue.

I keep talking myself out of $500+ watches then end up buying a few $200 deals.

                • @Powershopz: Dunno could try both on, eventually you'd probably get both. Depends if you want to set the time before wearing or not and if wearing most days. Probably only $150-200 difference.
The turtles are pretty nice but big, the other one is smaller. The JDM turtle colour scheme is more versatile being black, not sure how good the bracelets are anyway but also depend if you like the rubber strap (usually best to buy the stainless version first).save the ocean looks nice in blue too.

                • @Powershopz: PS king turtle JDM is great for $400 and the rubber strap would be comfy and cut down on weight. The stainless bracelets are pretty cheap quality (single link that looks like a three link, cheap push button clasp). A crono later for something different. They should wear well and smaller like a steeldive so not exactly as big as you think. The King samurai nice too.

      • +3

Those are all pretty big boys.
Can't say I need any king turtles or Samari whilst I got a steeldive.

        • +4

          Ditch the steeldive then

I just counted. You've posted this link 37 times. I still get a laugh every time.

  • +1

I find the King Turtle to be such a weird watch. Honestly, in photos I think it’s ugly but on wrist it looks so much better and wears quite small. Don’t be put off by the measurements.

Also the steel bracelet is complete garbage imo. Factor in buying a new strap to the price if you’re going to get the King Turtle.

    • Any strap or bracelet recommendations?

  • While I love the look and feel of Seiko turtles I will admit that mine has been relegated to the bedside table drawer for the past 6 months.
My one at least was losing too much time each week to be a daily driver. That's with every day use too so it's not like it was sitting still with the power reserve dwindling for a day at a time.

    • Sounds like you need a few more solar quartz/eco-drive watches ;). Setting day date on autos loses its novelty, and an 80 hour power reserve with date only would be my pick, or no date hand wind.

      • I have a decent, cheapish citizen solar which I like but that has also been relegated to the drawer, I've almost exclusively been using my G-Shock ga-b2100 since getting it.

  • Bring back the orange sumo you cowards

    Lol

  • Need a nice auto 38mm to go on sale.

  • Very tempted by the SRPE05J! Only thing stopping me is already having a SLA051. Probably don't need both…. or do I….

    • +1

LOL - I was thinking exactly the same thing about the Bulova Lunar Pilot…as I was typing my CC details in.

SRPE39K is now $419 at WatchDepot with the sign up bonus!

Thank you! I have been admirer of watches for long and now finally can afford a watch at this price. Got this one and very excited about it, thanks OP 😊
