This reads more like an advertisement than a bargain.

Meh… $20 off on a $100 product is a better deal than those sh!tty “save $2 on a $500 gift card” deals that get 100+ upvotes on this site

Before people drop money on this compare it to a proper sleep apnea test that measures much much much more to get a proper diagnosis.

If you wear a watch that can measure heart rate and 02 stats you're not far off what this will do.

I did that "proper" sleep apnea test 3 years ago and it was a box the size of a small shoebox that you had to strap to your chest (central to half a dozen electrodes), and because I had a big (profanity) box strapped to my chest preventing me from sleeping on my side or front like I normally do, I didn't get a wink of sleep and the data was completely useless. The government-certified charlatan still charged me $250, of course.

You and me both! I had the exact same feedback. If i can't sleep because the equipment is uncomfortable, what use is the test?? I was fuming that I essentially paid for a night in the world's worst 5-star hotel

You can get a sleep test for free at a public hospital

    • And it’ll be a legit sleep test.

But also if you get a referral and go on the waitlist today, you’ll probably get a sleep test in 10 years.

If anyone is suffering from poor sleep and suspecting issues like sleep apnoea… recommend paying out of pocket to have it done privately. Your sleep quality and health will thank you. Well worth the money.

      • There's also private places that offer free, proper home sleep studies.
If you're in Melbourne the place below is run by actual sleep scientists. They hook up so many wires and sensors that it's laughable that something like this could possibly be considered comparable. Do they also sell a machine that takes your blood pressure and claims it will tell you if you have cancer or not?!

You need a referral from your GP but they have one on their website that lists out the criteria that your doctor will ask you. It's pretty easy to qualify, basically be a fat bloke that snores or gets tired! Not sure why you get an instant point for being a bloke - science or the bloody partiarchy at work again!?

Alot of chemists seem to do them now too but they usually want $50. Still it's nearly half the price, not sure why you'd pay more for less…

Only if you meet the criteria

  • Also worth noting that if you do suffer from sleep apnea and require a CPAP machine, you'll generally only be eligible after a proper sleep study and a recommendation from a sleep specialist.

Happy to be proven wrong - I would love to claim some of the cost of mine back.

    • You bought a cpap machine without a doctor diagnosing you?

      • No, I purchased one without a sleep study. They have other indicated uses other than obstructive sleep apnoea. Unfortunately, the rules for claiming with my previous health fund required a sleep study with a sleep specialist. My ENT and respiratory specialist recommended using one and their recommendation didn't satisfy the fund rules.

        • I just checked Bupa and you are right: CPAP and BPAP machine (used to treat sleep apnoea)

That seems scummy of Bupa if you otolaryngologists said you needed one.

          • @deme: Lesson learnt.

But both my and my partners quality of sleep is much better and I'm still in front compared to if I had have done a sleep study at a private hospital and paid the gap and excess

  • On this topic of sleep apnea, apart from CPAP machine which lets be honest is almost as good as hooking yourself up to a life support machine when you sleep, what are some natural remedies that can help fix/lessen sleep apnea?

    • +2

As a sleep apnea sufferer that uses a CPAP, I have come across 3 potential natural remedies:

      1) soft palate strengthening exercises. There are apps for this which walk you through mouth and tongue exercises. There have been clinically significant results after 8 weeks according to some studies.

      2) breathing exercises which correct mouth breathing and 'over breathing'. Breath by James Nestor has some information. The thinking behind this is if you can recalibrate your body to tolerate more c02 and reduce breathing rate (say to 6 breathe per minute), you will breathe slower and reduce airway collapse.

      3) learn to play the didgeridoo. There is at least one study demonstrating clinically significant results. It sort of combines the benefits of the above 2 options.

Having done the research, I didn't stick with 1) or 2) long enough to see results. 3) is hard to find an instructor and the instruments are expensive.

My near 400 day consecutive steak of CPAP usage has helped me to lose weight which has helped, but tbh even body builders suffer from OSA.

I also tried a mandibular advancement device (moves your lower jaw forward to open the airway) which definitely helped, but caused my bite to get out of alignment so couldn't eat or talk properly for hours or days. I use this on airplanes since it cost $2000.

As a bonus tip, look at mouth taping while sleeping which I've found made a massive difference to sleep quality.

    • For some, stop being fat.

      • This! Ha but also there's some great laser treatments available that help as well
