Sydney to Vietnam One Way Airfare from $0 (+ Taxes) @ Vietjet Air

917

From timeout.

Well, if this isn’t your sign to take a load off and finally book in a holiday, we don’t know what is. Vietnam’s low-cost airline Vietjet is delivering another one of their ridiculously discounted flash sales – and this time you could nab an international ticket for as little as zero bucks.

If you’re scratching your head wondering how and why this is even possible, it’s important to note that their ludicrously low fares come with a caveat. While fares are being offered up for $0, you’ll have to foot the bill for taxes and surcharges. Regardless, this is your chance to get extremely cheap fares.

Vietjet operates out of Sydney as well as Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and flies to a number of destinations throughout Vietnam and Asia. Fancy a jaunt to Da Nang, Bali or Phuket? The world is your oyster and it’ll cost you zero pearls.

Kicking off this Saturday, September 9, from 0:00 to 23:59, Vietjet will release millions – yep, millions – of tickets for 24 hours only.

Will there be Bikini Babes on board the flight?

    • I'm holding out for the topless flights. (And hoping the "Lizzo is healthy and beautiful" crowd don't get involved… I don't want to be tripping over sagging 5318008s on the way down the aisle.)

  • Begging this, insanely misleading. It's not like we allow for posting without GST.

    • Yep — if you posted any other product or service as $X (plus taxes) you’d be laughed off the site. Airline tickets get a free pass because… they just do, OK?? Don't ask questions or I'll neg your comment.

  • That website is a nightmare now imagine what it will be like Saturday.

  • so i assume we have to pay for return flights?

  • +1

    Should be reported as unobtainable!
“Millions” of tickets available so assume lowest millions is 2 million seats and they currently have 7 return flights to Sydney per week.

Say 300 seats per flight 300x7 = 2100 seats available (300 round number, actual seats based on their fleet is much less)

If all their fights out of Sydney were free that would be just over 100k seats in a year… no where near millions!

Their total aircraft fleet is 82 strong a320s ~150 seats and a330s ~ 250 seats

    • Not disagreeing with you that is totally sounds like marketing BS and they would go bust if they actually offered anywhere near that number of tickets for free.. but:

“ Punters can head to Vietjet’s website or app with the discount automatically applied when booking any airfare, to any destination travelling between September 18, 2023 and March 31, 2024.”

      It isn’t only Sydney.

I only fly our national airlines Qantas

  • +1

One way. No worries. Vietnam is so fantastic you want ever want to return to Australia.

    • -1

      True so vibrant and lively!

    • Yeah, but the cost of living is so high in Vietnam - especially rents…. oh wait, no, not at all :)

  • @Qantas You wanna ban VietJet Air? They offer zero flights. Million of them geez

  • what a interesting site, couldn't find flights from Sydney to Bangkok, Phuket. but you could do Sydney to HCM return and then HCM to Bangkok/Phuket return.

    • One way tickets -> your problem if connections won’t work -> saving to the airline

  • +1

Due to unforeseen circumstances, our return flights now cost double.

  • is this Sept 9th 00:00 sydney time or vietnam time?

  • +2

I've flown VietJet multiple times, most recently direct from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh and two internal flights last month. No issues at all. As long as you're not expecting full service from a low cost airline you'll most likely be satisfied. I see flights to Vietnam available for ~$400rt several times a year though, so keep that in mind.

  • So it'd seem like there are a few more details as per 7News

Discounted fares are subject to availability and can be used to fly to any location between September 18, 2023 and March 31, 2024.

Vietjet has flights departing from Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

The discount will be applied automatically, with no code needed.

The sale will take place for 24 hours, beginning at 3am AEST on Saturday, September 9.

Budget airline Vietjet is giving travellers the chance to score $0 airfare tickets to any of its international and domestic destinations for a limited time only.

As well as destinations within Vietnam, Vietjet also offers international flights to Bali, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea.

    But according to Escape

Vietjet’s jaw-dropping flash sale will only be available for 24 hours, starting from 0:01 to 23:59 GMT +7, September 9. For Aussies keen to book, make sure you take the time zone into consideration. Midnight September 9 GMT translates to 10am AEST September 9.

Which makes zero sense, and it'd have to 3 am as seen here

    • OMG I was up waiting for midnight to strike…now you tell me I got another 3 hours to wait….jeesus….

    • Odd that a news team would understand time zones whereas an international travel outfit would not (or would cck it up).

  • Mmmyeah, well I just tried repeatedly to book a few flights with 'VietJet' before giving up about an hour later. It was no picnic. These guys can't run a functional website, so I certainly don't have much faith in their capacity to reliably keep a plane in the sky. The problems with their online systems are too numerous to detail. 'Thwarted at every turn' is the phrase that springs to mind. Interestingly given the above stuff about time-zones etc., there were some flights (supposedly) available for '$0 AUD' at 12:01 Melbourne time (Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh direct for example, various dates), but all the return flights seemed to require a connecting flight operated by a mob (curiously) called 'Thai-VietJet', which was not offering any '$0' flights. I tried to book a return flight nonetheless and got most of the way through the tedious process, only to be jagged at the final turn, when the site froze every time at the payment stage.

Anyways, so far I'm chalking this up as an epic fail on the part of VietJet, given the above-described time-zone discrepancies provided, the weird 'Thai-VietJet' thing, and the total dysfunctionality of their website re payment (among many other aspects of their online booking process).

Maybe I'll have a look back at their site later this morning (after 3 a.m. Melbourne time?) and see if anything's changed; but I probably won't.

I'd be interested to hear what experiences others have during this 'sale'.

    • Ive done, Mel- HCMC route couple of times, their website and helpline has always been absolutely hopeless, but never had any issues with flight itself.
I am awaiting for 3 am time slot now

  • looks like site is going slowwwwww

    • Now it appears to have ground to a complete halt.

  • 3 am, and the website is ded :|

    • yep, that's when the sale was meant to start

      • Actually it was reportedly 'meant to start' at a minute past midnight this morning … then conflicting information was released/emerged, alluding to '3 a.m.', then '8 a.m.', etc. … none of which made much sense.

        • No, the statement on the site always said midnight Vietnamese time. It was always 3am here.

          • @witheredcouch: Oh, I guess the OP screwed up then, by not mentioning that. They stated:

'Kicking off this Saturday, September 9, from 0:00 to 23:59, Vietjet will release millions – yep, millions – of tickets for 24 hours only.'

No mention that that was alluding to 0:00 Vietnam time. I think this might have been based on misinformation provided in an Australian news release about this 'sale'.

            • @GnarlyKnuckles: In the actually linked article it says GMT+7 or whatever time zone I think.

    • same here, website won't load past the welcome page

  • news outlets and tiktok people have been spreading the word

  • even the app on my phone says temporarily suspended cause of network issues

  • Not much success still, website isn't a good time 😭 we have got though a couple or times but it doesn't show flights for $0. Seems the code isn't working?

    • There’s a code?? Isn’t it auto applied? I got to see $1 price but had to select package which gave the full price. Couldn’t get to checkout page to confirm final price

      • Was the $1 a flight out of Aus? And, was it on the first choose your flight page?

  • Site not working on any browser, and the app just keeps spinning without actually loading.

  • +1

had some luck loading prices on the app, looked like the average price form viet jet when booking 6 weeks out

    • Yeah I can't find any $1 flights and I have put in some odd dates out of school holidays as well and nothing.

      • should note I couldn't get to the purchase page, only the selection page

        • I am trying on the app, I can click to select a flight but then it tells me there is an error 'service is temporarily suspended, please try again later'.

Have you found any $1 fares?

          • @amberdbrickell: nah, best i could get was around $550 for carry on only in march

  • +2

Anyone else getting sick of the winking plane??

    • Haha yes!

    • just listen to there theme song on repeat, it helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMcW3-_SutY

      • I watched the whole thing. What a wild ride. And 4.6M views?!

        • yeah I re-watched it just then as well, me liking that stupid song is my secret shame.

  • Tried to troubleshoot with Amy but she left me on read

  • I can finally access the checkout page but it still doesnt apply a discount so the tickets are full price.

    • +1

Yeah no one on Twitter - sorry I mean X (ho hum) are having any luck either finding $1 fares. I think it is a farce.

  • +1

    Didn't show cheap tickets

  • +5

I can't see ANY $0 fares at all. The cheapest I've found was MEL-SGN. Base fare was $30+ Taxes were over $170 ppow.

Taxes were more in SYD and BNE.
    Fare was more to Hanoi.
    Searched out to March 2024.
Fuel surcharge of $50+ dollars also should be included in fare.

I recently picked up a Jetstar flight in October MEL-SGN for $440 pp return, with no need to get up at 3am to book, so really this Vietjet promo is a bit of a beat-up AFAICS.

If anyone can see $0 fares, please reply with example.

    • +1

At least jetstar tickets are obtainable lol

  • Has anybody actually got a deal?

  • Advertise price from $166, searching for December showing $1,3xx, guess they forgot a 0 in the advertised price…

    • +1

Feb and March have fares from about $60 - plus $170 taxes.

      • Yeah I saw those, then it seems to jump to 300 per leg

  • +3

cost is the same as on Jetstar so no deal here

  • +1

I gather that VietJet just didn't actually execute the deal properly?

  • +1

Reviews for the app is a little worrying. I probably won't risk it

  • +3

My wife and I delayed purchasing non-Vietjet flights to Vietnam last week to wait for this "deal". Now those flights have gone up and I can't find any evidence that a single flight was even discounted. Was it a publicity stunt? Was it incompetence? Either way there's no deal here.

  • +1

Tried it 3 times screenshot each time for comparison. Same or just slightly dearer than jetstar

  • There's no deal. I have flown with them from Mel-HCMC 420$ return previously without any deal. I think they are just incompetent lot when it comes to anything to do on their website

  • +2

Non-deal. No listed $0 fares or even reduced fares. Only available for 24 hours yet 10.5 hours in and not a single deal observed.

  • +1

Do the vietjet deals ever come through? It seems like their site always has a "glitch" after they build some hype for some promo.

  • +1

Methinks they're appending excessive fees to make up for it
