    So kinda 5% off on a $100…

    • 4.545%

      • How did you get 4.545%? The net cost is $100+$5-$10=$95. The value is $100. Therefore the discount is $5 which on $100 value is 5%.

        • You pay $105 upfront, not $100. Every time this deal comes up, this gets asked.

          • @Alley Cat: Yes, as I said above $100+$5 which equals $105. The discount cannot be 4.545%

            • +1

              @wesman:

The value is $100. Therefore the discount is $5 which on $100 value is 5%.

The value or initial outlay is $105 (as far as your bank statement is concerned), you then recover the original $100 plus $10 profit as flybuys points. So the little project at termination is worth $110. ($110-$105)/$105 gives you the profit you made.

You don’t save anything btw. Because to realise the profit you have to spend it all.

              • @Alley Cat: Thanks, but 5/105 still isn't 4.545%

                • +1

@wesman: You are quite right, I didn’t put it in the calculator. It’s 4.7619%.

                  • @Alley Cat: Cheers, yes 5/110 is the 4.545% so neither I nor tooblue was correct as 4.76% is the correct answer. Back to High School maths for all of us LOL :)

                    • +1

@wesman: The actual flybuys pts earned is 2105 per Card, which makes the calculation more complicated.

5% is close enough to be correct.

  • Is this worth?

  • +2

The purchase fee effectively kills the deal for me. It’s literally $10 coles voucher while paying $105 for $100 gift card.

  • Need to get some apple gift card before iPhone 15 launches. Missed all the previous deal! Hope woolies will have promotion for apple gift card in this weeks catalogue.

    • Hope woolies will have promotion for apple gift card in this weeks catalogue.

Unfortunately, it'll be 10% off a bunch of gift cards, none of which are Apple.

    • mate those apple gift cards are on every month can't believe you didn't buy any

i complained they happen to often

  • +3

    where is the 10%

  • +2

i only buy these to get the amex reward points to convert into singapore airmiles.

  • Pretty meh deal unless you have outstanding ATO/rates bills to pay now.

    • +1

      Special bonus from credit card.

      • what's your suggestions/go to for credit card bonuses? Some I think are just once in your lifetime. Been a customer of WBC, CBA, ANZ, Amex already.

        • CBA has a 2% cashback on supermarket spend offer for select customers this month.

Also Since CBA raised the monthly spend on a personal credit card to waive fee, it is an opportunity to hit the target.

          • @Neoika: haha yes precisely why I asked since they introduced a monthly spend requirement for fee waiver, I'm planning to cancel CBA card and move to another one. As surprising as it may sound but I'm not always able to meet the monthly spend. Rather, if I have a lot of these cards, I'd be spending using these instead of my CC.

    • Can you split pay them?

  • Can you buy these with the Supermarket swap cards? May be worth it that way…

    • Yes, I have done it. There are limits on how often it can be done withing a specific period.

    • What is a 'Supermarket Swap Card'?

      • +1

I think they are referring to ShopBack Supermarket gift card. You can see it in the list of gift cards offered by ShopBack.

  • It does work as I don't think they know what you are buying with those. Still not a great ROI vs the straight 10 percent off but on the other hand you can actually find stock. Good for paying rates, health fund etc

  • Can we split the purchase into multiple cards at the check out? So that I can use HSBC Global card for 2% off.
Purchase gift cards at the stores are quite tricky when splitting.

    • +5

At Coles self checkouts, you cannot do split payments across multiple cards when purchasing a gift card. If you press the Mixed Payment option on the payment screen, you will get an error message telling you to go to the service desk to do split payments. I think you can still do split payments between cash and one card payment, but if so:

      • You would need to insert cash first.

      • There will be no option to obtain change from the cash you insert. That means if you are purchasing a $100 Coles Mastercard gift card through this deal and insert a $20 note first, you would then need to pay $85 from a card. There is no way to force the checkout to give you back $14.95 in change and then pay $99.95 from a card (which sounds like the ideal scenario for you).

At Coles standard checkouts (which includes the service desk and any checkout that is operated by a dedicated staff member), you can do split payments across multiple cards (or multiple cards and then cash) when purchasing a gift card, but that is dependent on:

      • The staff member knowing how to do split payments (and I have found out the hard way a couple of times that not all staff know how to do that).

      • The staff member being willing to let you do split payments (and I have found out the hard way a couple of times that not all staff will do this for purchases of gift cards).

      • I tried splitting between three ShopBack Supermarket gift cards but for some reason only the first ($300) was successful. The second ($200) was declined twice with message 'Invalid transaction'.

        • +3

          That is to be expected.

Blackhawk Network (the owner/operator of the Activ Visa gift card scheme1) has been enforcing spending restrictions on their gift cards (including Activ Visa gift cards) at “supermarkets”2 for a number of months now.

Based on the OzBargain consensus, the limit appears to be $400. If you exceed this limit, you will be declined with error code 12 (Invalid Transaction). In terms of how this limit is implemented:

          • You cannot redeem more than $400 from a single Activ Visa gift card at any supermarkets each day. For example, if I have a $500 Activ Visa gift card and go to one Coles supermarket and redeem $300 from it, it should go through. If the first $300 redemption went through and I then go to a second Coles supermarket (or a Woolworths or an ALDI) on the same day and attempt to redeem the remaining $200 on the gift card, the transaction will be declined. I would need to wait until the next day before I can try to redeem the remaining $200 at a supermarket.

          • You may not be able to redeem more than one Activ Visa gift card within an approximately ten minute window at the same store. I have previously been able to redeem $200 and $50 Activ Visa gift cards at the same Coles store within seconds of each other. However, you have found out that redeeming $300 from one Activ Visa gift card and then another $200 Activ Visa gift card at the same Coles store may be declined (and I presume the second gift card was being redeemed within about ten minutes of the first one).

These restrictions also cover Perfect eftpos gift cards and OnlyONE Visa gift cards. For example, I have redeemed $250 from a Perfect eftpos gift card at a Coles store, and then was declined from redeeming $250 from an Activ Visa gift card at the same Coles a few seconds later (and yes, the response from Blackhawk Network was error code 12).

One of the issues with Blackhawk Network’s restrictions is that if someone else uses $300 from a Perfect eftpos gift card to pay for their groceries (or gift cards) at the same Woolworths you are at and they redeem that gift card within about ten minutes of you trying to redeem a $300 Activ Visa gift card, it will mean that your Activ Visa gift card should be declined until the ~ten minute period has passed (unless you only redeem $100 from your $300 Activ Visa gift card during that ~ten minute period).

If you are wondering why Blackhawk Network is doing this, my guess is that they hate it when people use their gift cards to purchase gift cards (and a lot of gift card deals are available through “supermarkets”). If you look at the physical packaging for an Activ Visa gift card manufactured in December 2022, it says in large text on the back Cannot be used to purchase gift cards. These restrictions at “supermarkets” are one way to dissuade people from using Blackhawk Network’s gift cards to purchase gift cards, but it has obviously unpleasant side effects…

My suggestion is you reach out to GYB, as they are looking for people who have been impacted by this restriction and is trying to see what can be done about it.

          1. ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards are Activ Visa gift cards with ShopBack branding on it.

          2. These restrictions have cropped up for instore purchases at Coles, Woolworths and ALDI. My presumption is that Blackhawk Network is targeting these restrictions based on the merchant category code used by these three supermarkets (MCC 5411), partly because ALDI is not known for its instore gift card deals.

thanks, but not quite (at least for me) - seems to be 10min per POS terminal, but maximum of 3 per store within 10min (might have to wait 10min after 3rd to use another)

  • Good for stacking to buy other Gift Card offers online & pay with these via Paypal.

    • Can I add the balance of this to the PayPal?

      • +3

I link the card to PayPal and select it as my preferred payment.

        Yes.

  • Can the Coles MC be used to buy Uber cards at Woolworths 10% off on Wed?

  • Very limited stock available.

  • +1

PSA if you have linked your flybuys accounts (husband, wife, kids, dogs), you are only qualified once for the promotion, I learnt the hard way :(

  • TLDR: not worth the risk/effort.

Last time this was on, one of the cards wouldn't scan, so the self checkout lady tried and failed. I got a replacement from the rack, I came back and she processed it. I ended up with the faulty card that wasn't activated - she either accidentally or purposefully swapped. When I found out and went back they took my details, said manager would call. Didn't happen, I went back, they said they can't help me, I asked for manager, she said they had 'had comms saying they can't refund, we need to speak to coles phoneline'. I called them they said they would get back to me in 1-2 days, they didn't. I have now emailed them twice more and they say 'they are working on it'. I might have to do a chargeback AGAINST COLES!?

You can also get hacked, and someone said it pushes up your weekly spend, leading to flybuys algo targetting you with crap deals like spend $200 a week for 4 weeks to get 12 flybuys points..

    • So you mean these cards are getting hacked as well? not just the one that you can buy from giftz.com.au website?

    • Just do a chargeback after the initial contact fails. Why are you even wasting your time on this?

      • I've never done a chargeback for a partial transaction, not sure how smoothly it will go. Also a chargeback with kogan is a huge PIA.

        • You can certainly do partial chargebacks, but there is a unbelievably high chance for the bank to stuff up and refund you in full, especially when this is done through a banker assistanted channel (instead of online self service like Amex)

          • @truetypezk: Well if that happens I won't complain, about time a bank mistake went in the customer's favour.

    • Same happened to me last year. You have to call the number behind the card, they will raise a case and you will need to email your detail with photo of coles receipt and the physical card that was not activated. Then you have to wait for 3-4weeks until they finalise the investigation.

      • They finally authorised me to go back to the store for a refund. This should be fun.

  • What will be the Cashback for 250$ card same 2000 points ?

    • +1

Yes with $7 fee so $100 card with $5 fee is the best value for 2000 points

      • Thanks

  • +1

Can I use it to pay QLD speed ticket? fine is $309 so need to split in 4 payment.

    • +1

      Yes,I did this.
But need to pay card fee.(I think it was 0.4% or so)

  • surprised no cards found in 4 stores …

    • All but one store in my area were sold out by mid-morning Wednesday.

These offers seem to be much more popular than the number of votes on OzBargain would suggest.

      • Everytime I have been to Coles before this sale the stocks were very low.

    • Don't forget to open the rack and check the boxes behind if possible.

      • did get one last from bottom of small shelf, think someone hided then forgot.
still none in any of sydney city stores at Tuesday night.

        • When the rack is full, staff may leave some boxes unopened in it. Random drop could happen upon unboxing.

    • is the promo 5 cards per day or for the whole duration? I would have thought there would be more cards available. I haven't bothered.

      • Limit 5 Gift Cards per Flybuys account.
I haven't bought in this promo but struggled to find the $100 gift cards in the last promo at several Coles (half an hour apart)

  • Anyone else having trouble logging in to check the card balance atm?

    • Nope just did it a few minutes ago, try incognito/private mode.

      • Thank you. I gave that a go but it made no difference. Neither did changing my IP. But nearly an hour later it's working again

  • does anyone know where will you receive the flybuy points upon purchasing the gift cards? I’ve been waiting for two days and no flybuy points added to my flybuy account

    • +1

It’s usually ~5pm the day following the purchase. Does your receipt show your Flybuys number?

      • Most likely forgot to scan flybuys. It is common.

        • This is why the other type of deal where the discount decreases the amount you pay is better. You straight away know if you have done everything correctly.

          • @Yola: You can know that the purchase has been registered to your flybuys by the generated fuel voucher right after, unless you have bought the wrong cards.
