  • why so cheap?

    • +4

SSD prices have dropped a lot this year and seemingly still going.

      • Oooh baby, just a few more years until I can justify a PS5 with enough SSD. 5TB storage on my PS4 Pro is still going.

  • What is the best SSD for a file server / NAS, if durability is important? Or is it still better to just use HDD?

    • +1

Depends on how many concurrent users, the file update frequency, and the network bandwidth. HDD is always a 'not wrong' answer. You need a good brand high-quality SSD if that is your choice.

  • Is this fast? As in I can run software or samples directly off it connected to my laptop? My main HDD is only 512GB and alot of music software and sample cds take up so much space!

    • Specs are listed in the description…

      • I don't know whats fast or not fast tho haha

        • It can copy 1 gb per second (its a solid state drive SSD) if you have a Hard disk drive (HDD) this ssd could be over 10 times faster. It would take a couple mins to transfer everything from your HDD

          • @BananaMan007: My laptop has a SSD, but I want an external drive that can run software or samples off it?

I have external HDD, but I assume would be laggy? I thought there was different types of sad!

            • @[Deactivated]: The HDD would be slower but it can also depend on what harddrive you can compare read write specs of it but the SSD will defintely be fast enough for most things. I can run games off my 970 evo plus in ssd enclosure very well.

    • If you're talking about playing music samples then surely they'd play fine off a USB drive?

If that is the case they'd most likely play fine off this imo. Just watch for the USB speeds/versions and all that. But most of the time if it's 3.0 or above for me at least I'm happy

  • Purchased. Have T5 & 2x T7s. All good.

    • Same. CCC shows previous prices so this looks to be really good.

  • It's still cheaper to build your own external ssd if you really need external. Buy a quality m.2 SSD and an SSD enclosure and you'll be good to go.

Link to a ‘quality’ 2TB m.2 and ‘quality’ enclosure that supports transfer rates and low heat conductivity?

      • +7

Sure thing, these are very high quality parts guaranteed to be way better than the T7. Feel free to research the parts to verify.

SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD - https://amzn.asia/d/8RDWduh
        - $145.73
        - Has very good dram cache, T7 does not
        - 3.5x faster read speeds than T7
"Overall, the 970 EVO Plus is one of the fastest SSDs we've tested, so it easily gains our recommendation."

        Enclosure: UGREEN NVMe M2 SSD Enclosure ‎B0BQ6SHNP1 - https://amzn.asia/d/dvR5QAE
        - $36 (with 20% off coupon)
        - I personally use this one and can attest to its high quality
        - Very good thermal conductivity
        - You could also go with this one https://amzn.asia/d/bk756eH for $32 also highly rated and best seller

In total comes to $181.73 which is cheaper than T7, but more importantly performs way better. You can mix and match so many different ssds and enclosures they're all pretty much the same anyways, you can go with cheaper enclosures if you want or choose other cheaper ssds to fit your needs. For example if you are using this external ssd for storage, you won't benefit from the dram cache and the TLC design as much and may opt for the Crucial P3 which is way cheaper with no cache and QLC instead.

        • Sub $40 10Gbps enclosures would be cheap and cheerful.

I’ve been eyeing off this one which is 40Gbps but also comes with a premium price.

I'm going to give you a + because you actually went and gave a couple of examples, but I want to caution that the point you made about the 'DIY' external being significantly faster is immediately made moot the second you put it in either of the recommended UGREEN enclosures. Reason: both are limited to 10Gbps (and thus why the T7 will advertise that speed).

I have the second UGREEN enclosure you recommended, and can also attest to the build quality. It's not amazing, but it's pretty decent, and frankly, a better form factor than the T7. I also have 2 x T7s, so kinda feel like I can say that. ;)

That said, the T7 is still a quality drive with a premium finish. I rate it.

        • Thanks for all the information guys. Maybe silly question, are there reliable enclosures that go beyond 10Gbps then and would be recommended for combination with the 970 EVO Plus?

I'd be careful with these kinds of drives. I own a Sandisk and haven't run into a problem, but recently there have been lots of failures for others.

    https://petapixel.com/2023/08/08/sandisk-portable-ssds-are-f…

Just to be clear, that link is specifically for Sandisk.

A quick search for the T7 shows a thorough review and what may cause it to fail.

Don't get me wrong, I love these drives, and they're perfect for what I use them for, but I recommend backing up everything you put on them as soon as possible.

    • what do you recommend? I just bought one.

      • To be honest, simply use it normally and backup your data as quickly as you can, either to the cloud or a hard drive. They appear to malfunction as a result of the heat produced by operating quickly. Just try to avoid storing anything valuable on it in case it breaks and you lose everything.

        • How secure the clouds are? Which cloud provide excellent download and upload speeds and cheaper to use? I just wanted 1tb cloud for important backups

    • +2

I wouldn't be conflating the Sandisk firmware issues with random failures for the T7, very different issues. For the T7 you would just take normal precautions as you would any other drive if you value your data (move data off drive ASAP, multiple copies of files etc.) whereas the Sandisk Extreme Pro SSDs are more something you would actively avoid at this stage (think HEYMIX lol).

If I'm in the field I usually copy any data to 2 portable drives to minimise any chance of data loss and I'd do that regardless of brand/model of portable drive. Same thing with anything I value on my desktop PC, backed up to cloud or NAS (or both).

  • Red is Faster

    • Vroom vroom 🏎️

  • Are these shuckable? Eg to put in rog ally

    • No it's all on one board. See the anandtech review linked above.

      • +1

Thanks for confirming. But I won't be getting the 970, not too keen to mod inside the ally just to fit a drive. I'll wait for a 2tb 2230 at a good price

  • Do you actually get the 3 year warranty with this drive?, as its coming from the UK via the Australian Store and it says 'UK imports may differ from local products' under the heading it also says 'Manufacturer warranty may not apply but you may have other rights under law'. I thought in order to qualify for the AU warranty (3 years) it had to come from within AU ?

    • My understanding is that Samsung Australia will check the serial number to locate it's origin and refuse service.

Amazon say (In an online chat) that they will cover warranty for 2 years.

I bought this drive using this deal but bought my internal 2TB Samsung 980 Pro from Samsung Australia directly. Reason being that the internal will be used everyday but the portable is just a backup system when I'm traveling or when back home backing up.

  • what's the difference between international version and just normal one?

    • As far as I understand it, warranty.

  • 2 weeks delivery from the UK. The beige one is calling my name…
