      Are you RacistBull1?

  • -5

I love going to where people hate / recent disaster areas / terrorist areas because it's cheap (this deal covers all of 3 criterias)

    • +25

May I recommend Iran and the stans? I was watching youtube of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan last night and reminiscing of my adventures through there - everyone freaks out at the idea of going to a country with 'stan in it for some reason, but there were even Japanese tour buses in Bukhara, Uzbekistan! The M41 from Dushanbe to Khorog was one of my most defining travel memories. And all of it VERY cheap.

      • +3

Iran is great but its probably one of the most risky countries. If you go at the wrong time during protests you might get detained for a few years and held for ransom. Also the prices aren't cheap for Iran cause it's always been a risky country. Flights usually get cheaper for countries that suddenly have something bad happen inside.

        • +1

Flights weren't bad, you have to get to Dubai, basically, and then there are several that fly to Tehran.

The annoying part was the visa was for 14 days only. :/

          • @beatthatflight: Iran is safe for a tourist.

I find Tehran a very boring city with many unhappy looking workers - though same can be said for Beijing or LA. Tabriz, Isfahan and Shiraz are more interesting places to see

Their museums are sub par (for an old civilisation) IMO. Everywhere tourist ticket is 10 times the locals pay - not an issue of affordability, I rather be treated equally as a tourist you know.

      • the stans would be great, one of them have history with the koreas and japan (i vaguely remember massive korean migrated there)

visas, knowing where to go, travelling with kids make it harder

      • I bought a cheap car in London and drove it to Mongolia. Driving through the Stans on the Pamir highway was one of my best travel memories, and I've been to 70+ countries. It's seriously underrated and doesn't deserve to be the butt of many travel jokes.

        • My trip was also London to Ulan Bator! But backpacking instead. As I left Victoria station the bus started playing 'Borat' (facepalm), given I was headed to Kazakhstan on the way. Took me ~4 months all up.

          • @beatthatflight: Took me 4 months too, but detoured down to Spain and taking the car across to Morocco for a week. Our Iran and Turkmenistan visas expired so we couldn't drive through, ended up on a cargo train ferry from Azerbaijan across the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan. We were totally lost in Baku and a random stranger helped us, turned out to be the Minister for Emergency Services, he paid for our hotel and organised our extremely difficult passage onto the cargo ferry!

For anyone reading this, I highly recommend doing the Mongol Rally!

    • then just head to Queensland

  • +1

what a deal to pop up while i’m in the visa application centre for china lol

    • +1

Don't forget you need to have your biopage photocopied at A4 size.

I was there this morning 😀

      • +1

lmao. i wish i knew this sooner. lined up 50 minutes to be told i need to re-lineup with a copy of my passport. fml.

      • Not just a regular photocopy, but blown up to A4 size??

  • +3

Just thinking about the complexity of getting a visa. No, Thanks~

    • same, who has time to travel to a visa centre

    • +1

Lmao you think Australia is an easy place to get a visa for if you lived in 8/10 countries in the world? You'd be in for a shock.

  • Looking at getting a (L) Tourism visa. ((L) Independent tourist). It seems you need a letter of invitation? Is that right?
I've looked so many times at what is needed, but it just confuses me.
If I am an independent tourist, why would I need someone to invite me?

    • +1

      Website is super confusing.
You need to provide proof of flights and accommodation as well as a filled in visa application with a visa appointment at the application Centre in what ever city you reside.

I would say it’s a painful process not necessarily a difficult one.

      • I was wondering that, if you have proof of flights and accommodation, do you need a letter of invitation?

        • +1

no, letter of invitation is only for people with relatives or business purposes

      • +2

A lot of places is similar for applying for Visa. Dealing with painful bureaucracy

I recall doing the same for Japanese visa, they ask for full itinerary. US visa, there's an interview requirement. It's just Australian passport is very powerful, so not many countries you need a visa for.

      • Try explaining to them you intend on cycling from Vietnam to Macau and your not sure on what's dates you will arrive… It's easier to fly over China.

Had no problems cycling the rest of Asia.

    • +2

Went to China few years back, before COVID, you don't need an invitation letter for tourist as long as you provide your confirmed Itinerary and hotel reservation, the process was a bit difficult one had to apply in person, and so on.

But the actual trip itself was amazing.

      • The most amazing thing, if you take any notice or some of the inane comments above, is that you managed to leave again.

  • Temptation is real for nov

  • +30

Come one people !! Really uneducated, disgusting and low class people commenting on racist stuff. It is a good deal. If you don't wanna take it, scroll !! Please don't make offensive comments.

FYI: If you don't like China. Don't use your iPhone or iPad. Dont buy stuff from Kmart, Big W or Target. Don't be double standard.

    • +16

"Dont buy stuff from Kmart, Big W or Target" this is too hard for these losers who have brains the size of a walnut.

    • +7

I can dislike a country and still use their products.

Just like I can hate Chic-Fil-A for their bigoted religious policies, but love their chicken.

It's not racist to call out China's disgusting human rights records, their environmental stance, their belligerent approach to international relations.

You can be arbitrarily detained, held indefinitely as part of some political chess game. Most of us aren't lucky enough to be relevant enough for this to happen to, but who knows these days.

China is a threat, and is not our friend.

      • +8

I mean its kind of ok to have these thoughts (whether its truth or not is another problem), but plz do not have negative opinions or stereotypes against ordinary Chinese ppl, I think most of them are just innocent like you and me :)

      • +4

A threat in the eye of the USA, so it's a threat to us.

        I like your logic 😹😄

        • +1

Well considering our security interests are aligned with the US, and we would join them in a war if that occured — it's sound logic.

        • +6

Just like Iraq and Afghanistan.. Thank god we spent billions and lives over there 🫠

At least the military complex and oil companies got their clip!

      • +1

Target the government, not the country then.

    • -1

If you read the comments, most are not racist. They are not saying bad things about all Chinese people. They are saying bad things about Xi Jinping's regime. Luckily for us here in Australia, we can do that without repercussions. We can call our leaders out when they do the wrong thing, and vote them out if the they do the wrong thing.

    • +22

This is honestly the most ridiculous comment I've seen on Ozbargain so far.

        • +9

the article you provided "The Beijing government is offering hefty cash rewards for information on foreign spies, state media report."

your comment "Because they are running an official campaign now to dob in any such foreigners for a 500,000 yuan reward. You will be treated as a spy."

          broaden much?

        • +5

@Foxxster do yourself a favour and stop reading Murdoch related news 😂😆

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Er er er. Except it isn’t . Do you’re a favour and grow a brain…Same for the other halfwits

            • +4

@Foxxster: ALL western media is biased against China.

Are they BSing? No, but they is definitely a bias. Some media outlets more so than others.
That being said All Chinese media do the same for the west so.It's basically apropaganda warfare.
The truth for a lot of things and perspective is generally somewhere in the middle.

Like any other country, there's pros and cons to China.

    • +6

Definitely not, i went a few weeks ago and the locals were friendly and we went to both small and big cities.

  • +21

Ozboganers strike again 😂 It's better that these braindead commenters don't visit other countries to be fair, they'd make Australians look very bad 🤷‍♂️

    • +7

Their choice is either Bali or Bali. LOL

  • +6

Hainan airlines is great i went with them a few weeks ago for china during one of these sales and food and alcohol was included with economy.

Visa process was fairly easy and quick as I paid for express service.

  • No way. Go youtube Gutter Oil

  • +16

It's sad to see a travel deal's comments section can turn into such a pathetic place.

China has plenty of amazing destinations & food worth exploring - regardless of whether you agree with their political view or approach.

    • +4

Exactly this, ozbargain comment section is loaded with comments and lame jokes about another country's politics

But keep going, nothing beats great deals that are unpopular and not run out of stock 😀

  • Are they subsidised by gov? Can’t imagine they could be making any money on these fares especially with the oil prices

  • +6

$500 to engross yourself in one of the oldest and richest cultures in history. Shockingly good value.

  • Anyone where you can opt in to stop over for few days in Hainan?
12hours transit is just too much but I dont mind staying for few nights

  • +9

It's actually not a meme to warn Australians away from travelling to China right now. The government is encouraging citizens to be suspicious of foreigners that are "too friendly". It's not about being political or not. It's not about racism. It is a genuine concern.

Be wary of accounts conflating concern about the CCP = Anti-Asian racism. This is word for word the line CGTN and GlobalTimes use.

    • +4

Being wary of China is not anti Asian sentiment. No one is mentioning Chinese people but rather the state. War with China is frankly inevitable in the next decade, Taiwan is too important to the west for economic reasons (where all the computer chips are made) and too important to China from a nationalistic standpoint. Neither side will back down.

Besides that China is committing genocide which in itself is a good reason to avoid going there.

Also travelling there is a pain, everything is done through government controlled apps, you need to give up your privacy just to be able to spend money.

I don't see any negative comments on flights to Japan or South Korea because it has nothing to do with anti Asian racism.

      • +9

Nationalistic? and economic reasons? you're so out of the loop on the issue your post reeks of propaganda. Its always been Sovereignty and Containment.
I remember Pre-Iraq the propaganda to demonise a government is about the same as today with China. Saddam was genocidal too armed with WMDs.

        • +4

Ganging up on Iraq was easy though.

Bullying the weak is a freedom that many enjoy.

  • +6

Whack a few cans of baby formula in your luggage and you basically have a free trip

    • +1

2 x 23 Kg luggage included.. more than a few cans

    • Seriously though anything illegal in doing this? Will Aus customs or china more likely to confiscate?

  • How's the food? Any recommendations?

    • +2

The food wasn't good lol. They use gutter oil in a decent amount of restaurants we went to and the food tasted very off in a lot of cities we went to. I'd avoid fried foods including fried rice and some meat selections. Duck and dumplings are good.

But there was one city where the food was great and that was qingdao. They cook a lot of fresh food and there's good beer culture there.

In general Chinese food in australia is better than chinese food in china with much better health standards.

      • +7

Re gutter oil, do you really think there is enough gutter oil to run * most * restaurants in China?

And in a way oil is oil, gutter oil is disgusting but its just oil.

The oil in your local fish chippery is likely filtered many times, the filtered oil is then topped up, but not changed at all - if you ask me it's akin to gutter oil

        • +2

          way to cope

        • +1

Gutter oil is oil? Holy shiiiiiiiit. Nah.

      • +6

Lmao imagine talking about gutter oil in 2023. You've obviously watched too many YouTube videos.

      • +9

"In general Chinese food in australia is better than chinese food in china"
        hahahahahahahahah

      • +1

Where did you actually go James?

Food in China is very diverse (more like food across the whole of Europe, not just one Euro country).

Alot of Chinese food uses intestine meat, cabbage, so that gives it an off smell to westerners.

I think the food in China is great.

  • +1

Going to be very cold in northern China around that time of year.

    • +1

yes. good for skating on the frozen ponds in beijing. great wall is very quiet around that time. holy shit it's cold though

  • +2

Does anybody remember the 2018 deal Sydney to Haikou return on Hainan Airways for $214. I took advantage of it and the flights were maybe 10% full. They were probably the best flights I ever taken, free alcohol, food was decent and most importantly I got a full 4 seat row to myself so I could lie flat.
Does anybody know if they still offer the visa on arrival at Haikou Airport?

  • +4

China I am coming!! It's gonna be my forth time there and I'm loving it

  • +2

The best of the Chinese airlines IMO. Their business class is pretty good too. Great price

  • If I lived in Melbourne or Sydney I would just go for a weekend of shopping at the markets!

I'm sure even at a week, there's alot to do in th major cities aka history etc.

  • They serve chicken dish as on board meal?

    • Yes I've been served chicken rice in their business class.

  • Does anyone know about the practicalities of …paying for stuff now? last time I was there I was basically dependent on relatives to wechat pay for stuff i.e couldnt really go anywhere myself.

    • +1

You can create a foreigner WeChat/alipay account. If linking to an international credit card doesn’t work for you, get your relatives to top you up with direct transfers from their AliPay/WeChat.

      • Need to use Alipay. Wechat pay requires identity verification which requires a bank card. Alipay you can use a foreign card.

  • +1

I don’t understand, summary says between Oct to March but the links mostly between Nov and Dec.

  • Do they still have covid restrictions in China ?

  • -2

I hear the concentration camps are nice this time of year #auschwitzchina

    • +7

Is that what they have in Darwin for the indigenous?

      • +5

Alice Springs - should probably grow it tbh

  • I can't see Sydney to Beijing in March 2024, is that a typo?

  • +1

Do I like the destinations? Probably not
Do I like the deal? Yes

  • +1

Booked for hometown visit trip with kids. was just looking at this yesterday. Thanks

  • +1

Ugh I'm annoyed already booked tickets for my mum and these are way better

Edit: Nvm actually only the ones with huge layover time are cheap and the dates aren't what we are after

  • Maybe don't pour money into an authoritarian dictatorship that is still actively genociding millions of Uyghurs via mass forced sterilisations and labor.

    • +3

Forced labour lol, what do they have Uyghurs working on?

    • +4

Which completely justifies we go to war with them to over throw that dictatorship and bring freedom to China? Sounds like a broken record atrocity propaganda that's been played in our media on Iraqi, Syria, Afghanistan, Libyan in the past decade. Since when do we care and love Chinese Muslims this much? Not long ago Muslims were monitored and discriminated against here. Guantanamo bay where a place they were tortured and died. I'm not sure why people have short term memory lost when history repeats it self over and over again with the same BS for war?

      • No one said anything about war mate. We can all universally agree mass involuntary sterilisation is horrific, no matter our past.

    • +2

Your money also helps the people in the country. The same people who you will literally do nothing to help otherwise.

You might actually enjoy yourself seeing a new country and cultures.

Comments like yours are just stoking the flames.

      • -3

You can't make an humanitarian argument for Chinese tourism when it's probably one of the least cost-effective ways for improving the welfare of other human beings.

I've been to China plenty, this isn't twitter where we need to blindly accuse strangers of being closed-minded for brownie points.

The scale and severity of what the Chinese state is doing to the Uyghurs is utterly horrific.

        • Lmao you realise there are complexities to the XinJiang area? If you've actually been, you'll know the incredible changes.
          The MSM is absolutely false.
You're telling me there's millions of people actively being sacrificed and they're all sitting idle?
Do you think that lowly of Muslim people that they would sit on their hands and let this happen ? Absolutely not, one only needs to look at history to see how they will fight back in the face of tyranny (looking at you USA).
If you know chinese people who work in XinJiang or Uyghurs, you'll know how the CCP government give extra credits to help them get into universities that arent afforded to Han chinese. Why would they do that?

  • -1

No way i am leaving the richest country Oz to go to some 3rd world

  • +2

Sounds like a great deal! But checking smart traveller it says:

"We've reviewed our advice for China. We haven't changed the level of our advice, exercise a high degree of caution. As previously advised, authorities have detained foreigners on the grounds of ‘endangering national security’. Australians may be at risk of arbitrary detention or harsh enforcement of local laws, including broadly defined National Security Laws."

It's a no go for me and my family then.
